I don't buy for a second that Kevin Hayes isn't available in New York, given that he's on just the one year deal. There are several players on that roster who could be nice fits for San Jose, though there isn't a ton of future capital left in the coffers to make big trades.

Obviously people will point to Ottawa as well given that they've traded with them twice. You have to wonder about JG Pageau , Zack Smith, Ryan Dzingel (though all of those wouldn't fit exactly).

When I downplayed the trades above, I didn't mean there won't be moves at all.

There will definitely be some movement around the end of camp, just with players who require waivers.

In Toronto for instance, where they have three goaltenders for one backup position. Or Vancouver, where they have eight defensemen on one-way deals.
There could easily be some minor moves.

But I'm really not sure how it will shake out.

What's up with Theodore ?  The Knights had no problem shelling out money for Stastny and trading a ton of assets for Patch ($ too) and Tatar....yet stiffing one of the best young DMen in the NHL?

Don't think they're stiffing him, just part of the negotiations for star RFAs without arbitration rights.

It's hard to work out deals with those players, because they're loathe to give up too many years, and the team doesn't want to commit too much money without buying out several free agent years.

I've thought for a while that the eight year deals with players out of their ELC are a mistake, because you end up paying too much for their RFA years.

The NHL is all about creating excess value, and paying $10++ million for your star right away completely limits that ability.
It's why I struggle with a trade like the Drouin one, because even though I like the player, I don't think there's a lot of room for Montreal to gain excess value out of him since they needed to pay him $5.5 right away.

Eichel's deal is like that too for me. You're basically paying him what he'd get on the open market as a superstar (a la Tavares) even though you have all the leverage.
