Here's Ben Cherington's answer on the decision to send him down: "Coming into Spring Training, we weren't closed off to the idea totally, but knew that he's really young, and he's incredibly important to us, and we think he has a chance to be a very, very good player for a long time, and we feel Some obligation to make sure that we're doing everything we can to support him and being that very, very good player for the longest time possible. And do whatever we can to help him be ready for the start of what we think and hope can be a really long career. Just ended up feeling like a little time in the Minor Leagues was what could be best for him to start the season. The great thing about him is that whenever the challenge has been put in front of him, really, from the day he signed with the Pirates, he's attacked it head-on and met it. I think he feels there's some work to do, and we've had good conversations about that. We're excited to see what he does"

There's a legitimate baseball reason to have him start in Triple-A. He hit below .200 in spring training. But I do think he'll be up and helping the Pirates soon.

In the AP article the other day about Andrew McCutchen making the Rangers roster, he's quoted as saying that he was "told to retire." Was he told this by a Nutting henchman? If so, please name the guilty party.

I didn't report this, so I don't know. McCutchen would have to share that himself.

I do not care for the headline on the article you wrote yesterday entitled "'We're just better': Pirates go into opening day with optimism, belief this year will be different[.]" Not because of anything you or the headline writer did, but because of the attitude it conveys on behalf of the Pirates. Given their sweeping lack of success in the last third of a century, shouldn't they talk less, walk smaller, be humble? Would it kill them to feel and express humility?

And final one. Did you read the article? Here's the link: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2026/03/25/pirates-mlb-ope...

But here's the most important quote in my opinion, from Bryan Reynolds: “I mean, we're just better. Everybody's feeling that, knowing that. The goals are always the same, but they're actually attainable now, and they haven't been in the past and we've had to pretend like they were.”

The Pirates think they're better. They have the same goals (winning season, playoffs etc) and believe they can accomplish those goals. In the past, that wasn't the case, Reynolds said. It was just talk, he said.

That's not arrogant, that's just belief this year will be different.

Of course, we'll see, and we'll start to see in just a few minutes. Mets-Pirates, starting at 1:15 on NBC.

That'll do for today's Pirates chat. Thank you all for joining. And once again, happy opening day.
