What catcher could the pirates target
Pirates Insider
12:39
Shelton has a history with Jason Castro from the Twins. Austin Romine is blocked with the Yankees. Russell Martin has a history here. There's a few who make sense.

Any thoughts on moving Bell back to RF?  Perhaps his defense wouldn't be such a liability and solidify an OF of Reynolds, Marte, Bell.  Thoughts?
Pirates Insider
12:41
It depends on if he wants to do it -- and I'd be perfectly fine if he didn't. I definitely have some reservations -- he can't turn a 3-6-3 double play, and now we're having him throw to third or home? Why? -- but it does make logistical sense. For me, it would depend on two things: 1. Does he wanna try it? and 2. What does he look like out there when he does.

I know this is going back slightly in the past, but can you explain to me what happened with Lonnie Chisenhall this past season? I've never quite gotten the whole story.
Pirates Insider
12:42
Lonnie, as I understand it, was hurt and couldn't seem to get healthy. I had also heard he was dealing with some "Andrew Luck-type stuff" when it came to getting healthy and even wanting to play baseball. From what I've heard, it sounds like kind of a crappy deal for Chisenhall, and obviously the Pirates took heat for it, as they should have. Not sure why they thought that move made sense in the first place, honestly.

Many of Pirates 2019 deficiencies were on full display and aren't easily remedied (poor defense and base running, anemic rotation).  How can Cherrington build confidence in MLB team as constructed, especially the starting pitching and minimal relief depth?
Pirates Insider
12:43
By playing better defense and running the bases better, for one. Those can be taught, learned, perfected. They just need someone in charge to make that stuff happen. I watched a crappy, boring and not-bought-in Penguins team go from nothing to Stanley Cup champions under Mike Sullivan. I'm not saying the Pirates are going to win the World Series, but it is possible for them to look like a competent, respectable baseball team in relatively short order with the right people in charge.

When does Jamo return?
Pirates Insider
12:44
2021. I don't see how he makes it back before then, although he's not closing the door on 2020.
Beltran.

What is taillon’s timetable
Pirates Insider
12:44
Officially ST for 2021. Talked to him a little bit ago for this story, where he said he's not ruling out 2020: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2019/10/31/jameson-taillon...

Nutting the billionaire is less important than Nutting the owner of a $1.1-1.2B valued asset which has appreciated ~$800-900M  in the past decade alone.  I wish there was more focus on the value of the franchise and less on the operational expenses.  It's too easy a cop out for Nutting and his apologists for under-investing in the team.
Pirates Insider
12:45
I'm not sure I caught your question there. My guess is that you want Nutting to spend more money on players. I think that's a fair expectation as a fan. I also think it's a fair expectation for the Pirates to do some of the process-type stuff better first to convince their owner it's worth spending money on players.

Who is the pirates best hitter and pitcher respectively next year
Pirates Insider
12:46
Josh Bell and Chris Archer. Yes, Chris Archer. I also expect Trevor Williams and Joe Musgrove to have decent years.

I know I’m hindsight the pirates are not in shape to content but to the same token, when I look around the NL Central, wouldn’t you say it’s a little bit more open than in the past.. the brewers have made a few moves and lost moose ( although to the Reds) the cubs may move some big names this winter and the reds never seem to put it together no mat r how talented they are.. is it crazy to assume that with the right management (I really like Shelton) and the right front office (I really like cherington) that the pirates may be able to quietly contend this year?
Pirates Insider
12:47
I think the Pirates can play decent baseball. They can be a heck of a lot better than 69 wins, for sure. But I'm not ready to say the NL Central is wide open. Reds are gonna be good. Brewers will find a way. Cubs are good. Cardinals aren't going anywhere. Pirates should be picked to finish last by everyone, but I do think they can surprise some people.

Payroll is a red herring.  If I buy a home for 100K and it's valued now at 500K I have an additional 400K in equity, not a 100K asset.  That's the lens to look at the Pirates capacity to spend more in line with mid to smaller market teams rather than threadbare payroll and scrapheap player acquisition strategy.  They don't need to compete with the Dodgers on spending, just the Twins, Reds and Indians
Pirates Insider
12:51
I agree with you. Again, it's a reasonable ask as a fan to want them to spend like other small-market teams.

Does cutch ever return? Even if it’s for a 1 day retirement thing.
Pirates Insider
12:51
Maybe for a one-day retirement, but I don't see the money or opportunity working before that.

Does Cherrington retool DR academy?  What have been the benefits to the MLB club?  What MLB players have come through the Pirates supposed game changing facility?
Pirates Insider
12:52
I think he makes some changes there. He has to. They've invested, and they say it's important to them. Yet it has yielded minimal results. Cherington has been good with that sort of stuff in his career. It makes sense that he would want the Pirates to be better there.

Who was the PTBNL for Dickerson  Maybe Cutch?
Pirates Insider

I don't believe there is one, and no, not Cutch. They have six months.

Good afternoon who is are the pirates looking for for the catcher will stallings be the back up catcher
Pirates Insider
12:54
They haven't said who they're looking at publicly or privately. I broke down their options here: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/pirates/2019/11/26/Pirates-catcher...

12:54
Is Musgrove a good pitcher? There are mixed opinions about him
Pirates Insider
12:54
I think so. And I think he will continue to get better with improved coaching and preparation. I think there's a good chance you see a lot of Pirates pitchers improve this season. They're much better than what they did this past season.

Also, what's a Dead song that other heads generally love, but you're not necessarily a fan of?

This might be heresy, but I'm not a huge Shakedown guy.

Have you seen the Dave Parker doc?  If so would you recommend?
Pirates Insider
12:55
I saw it last night. It's incredible. Gonna watch it again tonight with my wife. It's Must See, for sure.
OK, folks. That does it for this week. Thanks so much for participating. Let's talk again soon, maybe during the Winter Meetings.
