Good morning all! Anthony will get this chat started around 1pm CT, but you can start asking advance questions right now. Be sure to check back to follow along and participate live!
Anthony Franco
12:57
Hey everyone, lots to discuss from the past couple days. Let's get into it
John
12:57
With Bogaerts landing in SD, are the Padres more likely to trade Kim or Cronenworth? If the latter, do the White Sox make sense as a trade partner?
Anthony Franco
12:58
I think Cronenworth is more likely to go but don't see it as probably they'll deal either one. Seems like the main plan is to kick Kim to second, Cronenworth to first and Tatis to the outfield
Cashman
12:58
Do I sign an OF and then call it an off-season? Is Benintendi the favorite? Can I find a taker for Hicks or Donaldson?
Anthony Franco
12:58
(Yankees)
12:59
Left field is the priority, I agree. Benintendi fits, but I also think Brantley or Conforto make sense there. Would guess that's the biggest acquisition they have left but don't think it's the only one
1:00
Could still look for another starter, and they'll probably add one more reliever along with Kahnle. Could move one of Torres or IKF to clear some payroll room and/or bring back a back-end starter or middle relief help
I'd be surprised if they find a taker for either Hicks or Donaldson. They'd have to eat over half the money on both probably
HEY BEERMAN
1:00
Who says no? White Sox send Gavin Sheets, Colson Montgomery, Yoelqui Cespedes & either Garrett Crochet OR Noah Shultz for to Miami for Jazz Chisolm.
Anthony Franco
1:01
Miami, pretty easily
Connor⚾️
1:01
Rangers add more pitching & hitters?⚾️ thanks for doing this guys ⚾️.
Anthony Franco
1:02
Yeah Chris Young said yesterday they're looking to do both. They'll at least get an outfielder, not convinced they actually land another starter so much as they're just scanning the market to see if something falls in their lap
Still a Giants fan
1:02
With the Giants missing out on Judge, and Turner (my personal want), what does SF do? Correa? Senga? Rodon?
Anthony Franco
1:03
They're right there with Minnesota as the two favorites on Correa for me. I think they pretty much have to get at least one of him or Nimmo, wouldn't completely rule them out on both
John
1:03
Hahn & co have preached patience, but that's getting increasingly difficult for us White Sox fans (we few, we unhappy few). Is there a realistic shot they make a big splash with a trade or shock us by signing Benintendi or Segura?
Anthony Franco
1:04
Benintendi seems unlikely given James Fegan's reporting they're at their payroll ceiling already. Segura fits though, particularly if they deal one of their relievers for corner OF help
Hello
1:05
Does the braves trading jhm mean we're making a splash move for a longer term left fielder? Ie: Reynolds type
Anthony Franco
1:06
I'm sure they'll poke around the Reynolds market, but no, I don't think it's directly related to that. If anything, Malloy feels like a guy who could've been part of a Reynolds deal that they just subtracted from the system
1:07
I just think they wanted a good reliever to step into a leverage role with Iglesias taking the ninth inning for Jansen. Jiménez is a good reliever; Malloy's a good but not top-tier prospect, and the Braves are trying to get better for 2023. It's a marginal overpay from a pure value sense probably but one that makes sense for both teams given their respective competitive windows
Mainz Athletics
1:07
At this point, this years free agents receive more money (Bogaerts for example) than predicted by MLB TR. Is this (also) a result of the CBA with the higher luxury tax threshold or just the momentum of the Winter Meetings?
Anthony Franco
1:09
Yeah we've been discussing this a lot in recent days, since we ended up light on a bunch of guys. In some cases, we overvalued average annual salary at the expense of deal length. Bogaerts, Turner, deGrom all took less on a per-year basis but got significantly longer deals than we expected
Which the luxury tax incentivizes, since the lower annual salaries count against the ledger. But we underestimated how much that'd be a consideration for the top guys
1:11
The starting pitching market just kind of went wild in a way none of us think is advisable. There were a ton of mid-tier starters we had a hard time parsing out at the start of the offseason. Still not sure what it is the Phillies see in Taijuan Walker to go to $72MM when Tyler Anderson gets $39MM and Martín Pérez takes the qualifying offer
Pete
1:11
Who loses out in the elite shortstop market?
Anthony Franco
1:12
I'll guess Atlanta and whichever of Minnesota or the Giants doesn't get Correa, with Swanson to the Cubs. Slightly lean towards SF on Correa at this point, so Twins and Braves?
Oh, and Boston
Swanson Stan
1:13
If Cubs aren't already doing so, do you agree it would be wise to start prioritizing Swanson at lesser cost over Correa rather than wait and risk missing out on both? My view - a defense up the middle of Swanson/Hoerner/Bellinger establishes a solid floor and still leaves plenty of flexibility to raise the ceiling whether it's more this offseason (Senga, catcher trade, Happ extension, etc.) or down the road (impact corner bat, Ace, maybe Ohtani....)
Anthony Franco
1:13
Yeah Ken Rosenthal implied yesterday they already seem to be doing this. I think the reasons you highlighted for it all make sense
Ross Atkins
1:14
Have I been abducted? Jays fans are getting restless!
Crash
1:14
As a jays fan, how concerning is it that they didn’t make any deals at the winter meetings?
Anthony Franco
1:15
There's still time to dip into the middle rungs of the rotation and corner outfield markets, which were the big concerns coming in. Wouldn't worry about it much yet, never thought they were likely to land a top-tier FA
Roy
1:15
Just wondering... did anyone from MLBTR attend the winter meetings?
Anthony Franco
1:15
Not this year. Steve and Tim have in years past and might next winter
Guest
1:16
Pads still need a LF/DH. How much will Brantley or Confordo cost? Can we get either for under $10M/AAV?
Anthony Franco
1:16
Probably not on Conforto. Could see something like $10MM per if they go two guaranteed years on Brantley
Kirk
1:17
Washington is in the market for a SP so who is a realistic option?
Anthony Franco
1:17
I think they'll be on the Wacha, Lyles, Smyly types
Jj piccollo
1:18
Ive been quiet this offseason, but now that the winter meetings are over, isnt it time for me to listen to offers on Taylor, dozier, salvy, barlow and others? Wont the value now be highest for these players, especially for mid tier teams who couldnt spend a fortune on the stars?
