Hello, Will how are you doing? I am applying for the MCIT program on campus. Are international students allowed to apply? I was told that they can't apply to the online one
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir

Guest, yes, you are allowed to apply. And you are also allowed to apply to the online program as well. Can you tell me who told you that you are not allowed to apply?
Mosha Deng

Thank you, Will. I will have been out of school for 5+ years by the time the Fall semester rolls around (I graduated May 2014). Would this suffice? I will confirm with the Biotech office in any case. Thanks!

Mosha, that's a great question and one I haven't actually received before. Please email it to gradstudies@seas.upenn.edu and someone will get back to you with an answer.

You're welcome, again
11:07
Mosha, I just got an answer, and yes, if you graduated in May of 2014, then you can have all non-academic letters of recommendation.

Hi, I am sponsored by SACM and O am looking for Master degree in Nanotechnology (IELTS = 6, GRE= not yet)
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:08
Naif, thanks for letting us know. We do recommend a minimum IELTS score of 7.5. It is not required, but with a lower score the rest of your application will need to be that much more outstanding.
Naif
11:10
I'm still doing my best to achieve that score, when is the deadline for Nanotechnology program please ?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir

Naif, the deadline is March 15, 2019.

Hi, Will
I am an international student applying to the MCIT program. Does the toefl requirement get waived if I have completed my undergraduate studies in a university in the US?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:11
Yashna, you must have completed at least 3 years by the time the program would start to have it waivd.

I forget to mention that I have completed my ESL program in Georgetown University, does that make any change with the requirements?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:14
Naif, no, we don't consider ESL programs. Our thought is that if you've passed an ESL program, we would expect that your IELTS/TOEFL scores would meet our minimum recommended scores.

Ok thank you so much, my last question, is there any email that answers my questions later?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:16
Yes, you can send an email to gradstudies@seas.upenn.edu.

Thanks, Will! Now, since I come from a non-comp sci background. Could you give me advice on how I can strengthen my application? Will my application have a heavier weight on my personal statement? Is there a specific gpa requirement you are looking for?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:21
Yashna, the personal statement will definitely carry great weight, however, since this program is designed for those with a non-comp scie background, applicants come from many different areas. I'd recommend looking at the potential course list, here: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/current-students/graduate/mcit/index.php, for an idea of what to emphasize and how to get ready for the potential program. As for GPA, there is not a requirement, but you can find avg stats for applying students here: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/prospective-students/graduate/applying-stats....

Hi Will - One of my references would like to have his assistant submit my letter of recommendation on his behalf.  Would it be acceptable for the admin to send the LOR, with the letter writer CC'd, to gradstudies@seas.upenn.edu?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
11:23
Steph, we'd prefer that you go through the online recommendation system, as in addition to asking for a letter, there is also a form that we ask to be filled out. If necessary, they could use the link here: https://www.graduateadmissions.upenn.edu/offline_recommendation, and then submit it to admissions2@seas.upenn.edu, with your name, the specific program to which you are applying and LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION in the Subject header.
Steph

I see, thank you for the clarification.
