Yes Alan, we initially had to deploy staff from surgery and the out patient clinics to support the activity at Moodie and Fairfield.  We have since recruited more staff, so that we can repatriate these staff to their original jobs and ramp those services back up.

Our frontline workers are all hero's. So much gratitude to them and their families.

Tx Sonya. I see Pat White from LSpark Jamie and others from KNBA also on the call. It would be good to better understand what local technology is available to support the need. Let's reconnect.

There was a significant decline in ED visits in first wave.  Over the summer we were back up to our normal volumes.  We've recently seen a another small drop, but not as significant as the first wave.

Great to see and hear what is going on at QCH ! Has the opening of the Moodie Drive test and assessment centre and the Fairfield Inn ALC centre diverted resources away from other, conventional hospital services?

Invest Ottawa is proud to support emerging local smart health tech companies such as Welbi, Aetonix and Truala that are addressing key facets of COVD-19. These startups are developing and implementing novel life science innovations and platforms to support patients and families here in our community and around the world.

About 10% of our workforce is working remotely.  We took this step in March to reduce the number of people in the hospital, and therefore increase safety for patient and other staff.

Have people visiting the emergency room declined again in the COVID second wave?

Have any hospital staff been moved offsite or remotely to allow for more space to be used for an influx of patients?
Dr. Andrew Falconer

Yes, Sue and her team have done an outstanding job of setting up both Moodie and the Fairfield Inn, on very little notice.

We are already well into the second wave, and so far we are still able to chip away at the surgical backlog.  What happens next is up to the community.  Ottawa has been doing great so far, and we have not had to cancel any surgeries due to a shortage of beds.  While we are running at full capacity, we are still getting surgeries in.  Thank you Ottawa for listening to the advice of Public Health.

@dr. Falconer - Do you anticipate that the second wave will significantly increase the backlog in elective surgeries and are investments being made today to improve organizational efficiency?
Dr. Andrew Falconer
4:20
There is good news and bad news on surgical wait lists.  The backlog grew when we had to postpone non-urgent surgeries in the first wave, but we have been successfully bringing it down.  We are now doing elective surgeries on weekends to help us catch up.  However, there are currently 1,800 people waiting for surgery -- which is about 33% higher than before COVID.  We know these people need our help and support.

We have introduced the Patient Portal for online test results.  Eventually it can be used for on-line booking, and possibly for communication with the clinical team.
4:17
We have already started to use on-line booking at the Moodie Drive Care & Testing Center, and we will expand it to other areas in the hospital.

Thanks to both of you for doing this. Dr. Falconer, how long is the surgery waiting list now and when do you think the QCH will be able to catch-up?
Dr. Andrew Falconer

Initially we saw reduced demand for Mental Health services in our Emergency Department  and in-patient unit.  Now the demand is increasing and we are exploring several options including virtual visits to meet those demands.

@Dr. Andrew Falconer, what other technology innovations do you predict adapting in the next couple of years?
Dr. Andrew Falconer

There are definitely some type of visits that lend themselves better to virtual care, and some in which direct interaction and physical examination will still be important.

what impact has Covid19 had on the Mental Health services and Capacity at QCH.  If overcapacity what is the plan for Mental Health
Dr. Andrew Falconer

We do plan to increase virtual visits going forward.  Our target is 70% of the visits will be virtual, when it is clinically appropriate.  This is a good news story out of COVID.

Because of COVID I know that a lot of "visits" at QCH have been done by phone.  Will this kind of care become the norm after COVID?
