I don't mind the move. As you mention, Samuel is younger. And as much as I like what Pierre did in the second half of last season, he had been mostly a special teams player with the Steelers until that point. Plus, letting Pierre go works in their favor in the comp pick formula.

Well Ray i would go as of today with either Thieneman, Ioane or DT in round one those are outstanding picks no ? Your Thoughts please !
Ray Fittipaldo
12:31
Among those options, Thieneman is my first choice, but I agree for the most part. But why leave out WR if there is a really good one there at 21?

12:31
Do you anticipate the Steelers trading up for talent, trading down to acquire draft capital for 2027, or both?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:32
If I had to guess, I'd say they try to acquire capital for 2027, but that might be hard to do with every other GM knowing the '27 draft is loaded.

Is Allar seen as a 5th round or later prospect?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:32
I think he'll go before that. Maybe well before that.

With McCarthy's ability to develop QBs, would signing Kyler Murray be the best move should Rodgers retire or sign elsewhere? He has talent and his ability to scramble would be huge.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:34
I'm just not a fan of small QBs. I hate to rain on everyone's Murray parade. There are a lot of questions in the queue this week about him. I just don't see him as a long-term option. I understand why he's being discussed. It's became he comes for next to nothing like Russell Wilson did. That just does not sway me however.

Ray, with the CBs signing, does this meant Ramsey stays a Safety? Right now, what is the depth chart for th 5 Steelers DB positions?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:35
Ramsey can either be FS or slot CB. Depends on how the new staff evaluated him.

Many of our beloved sports writers here earlier hinted that efforts were in the works to save the P-G situation. Are they still ongoing, or does the May hammer drop?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:37
Hope remains.  "Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies".
What movie is that quote from?
Biff
12:37
Dean is a miss. Guys in their 30s get slower, fast. Haven't they learned their lesson? CB is a young man's position.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:37
He's only 29!
Donna
12:37
Ray, are you expecting the Steelers to make announce any signings today?  Thank you.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:38
The Steelers cannot announce any signings until 4 p.m. Wednesday. That's the official start of free agency. But you already have the news.

The Shawshank Redemption.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:38
Ding, ding, ding.
Mark
12:38
Is Aaron Rodgers really that much better than say Geno Smith?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:38
Yes.

12:39
Can you speak to the depth available at G, ILB, DL and S via the draft?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:40
It's a very good safety draft at the top with Downs, Thieneman and McNeil Warren all first-rounders. But good depth in the safety class overall too. It's a good guard group, not great. It's a good ILB group and a good nose tackle group. This is not a great year for 5-techniques.

Why are they keeping Ramsey at such a high price? He cannot play CB anymore and is overpriced for safety.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:41
Maybe his value will come in his ability to move around the secondary. Remember how McCarthy used Charles Woodson late in his career? I think he was mostly a safety with the Packers, but he had all that knowledge and was versatile. Maybe they view Ramsey in the same light.

I like the Pittman pickup to go along with Metcalf, but who's going to throw them the ball?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:42
I still have my money on Aaron Rodgers.

12:43
Has there been any kind of a revamp with the Steelers scouts?  Given the draft misses the past 5-7 years - it seems like there should be a big overhaul there.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:43
It's almost a completely new staff since Khan took over. There are a few holdovers such as Danny Colbert but most of the department has been turned over.

12:44
I'm also on the Thieneman train for round one but does that force us to WR round 2? And what kind of DT and G do we get in round 3? Do great players tend to trickle that far down?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:44
They got Polamalu at 16. Watt at 30. It does happen. And Thieneman has been going up draft boards, not falling down. Maybe he's always been in that mid-round range all along.

12:45
Is it time to cut Metcalf loose? His completions to targets were really low for the salary he gets.  Couldn't make the big third down catches. Attitude is questionable. Will McCarthy let his production slide like Tomlin did?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:45
If they were going to do that they would have already done it. And I should mention he's nearly unmovable with that contract.

12:45
Ray, thanks for the chats! How far up would the Steelers need to move to select Sonny Styles? Is that just pie in the sky stuff?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:46
I'm guessing into the top 15 for sure. Maybe higher.

12:46
Will Mike McCarthy win a Super Bowl with the Steelers? The easy answer is no way right? Not in another 15 years.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:47
All depends on the QB. They need to find one. Until they do they're on the very fringe of what I would say is a playoff contender. They're not a Super Bowl contender.
epiballo
12:47
No matter the news, most think the Steelers will again win 9-10 games and be blown out in the first round, if they qualify. Do you see the changes so far as moving that needle to a more successful season?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:48
Hard to say, but I'm leaning no. You either need a dominant defense or a franchise QB, and the Steelers have neither at this point.
