Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat: 03.17.20

If the steelers new that Hopkins would go (for free) would/should we have made a move?  I mean what a steal!
Ray Fittipaldo
2:20
A real head-scratcher. The guy is still in his prime. O'Brien must have hated him to deal him away for such little in return.

Ray, any recommendations for Steelers-related distractions to get us through the many boring days until the virus goes away?
Ray Fittipaldo

Watch all of the old Super Bowls on You Tube.

I read that Ben's cap hit next season is now over 40 mil. They have to eat that next year unless he got another extension right?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:22
Eat it? He's going to be their QB in 2021 unless he is injured again. They already spent the $. They didn't sign him last year to cut him at any point of this contract.

2:22
Think the Steelers should have any interest in Robby Anderson in free agency???
Ray Fittipaldo
2:22
Too expensive.

Do you like Fromme or Hurts if available in a later round like the 5th?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:23
Not really. I think 2021 or 2022 is the year to get a QB.
Tim
2:23
Hi Ray- how big of a need is RB in your opinion? I think we need to add one through the draft fairly early.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:24
Tough call. Depends on James Conner's health. If he's healthy they don't need to draft one all that high. But he's been injured so often that they're not going to sign him to a second deal. So eventually they're going to need to draft someone to replace him.

getting Jalen Hurts in the 2nd, cam Akers/Zach moss in 3rd, kvon wallace and best available oline or LB in 4... sounds like a win for us right?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:25
I like Akers though not sure he lasts until pick 103. And no, I don't like Hurts at any point in the draft for the Steelers.

Thoughts on jf JuJu can be the #1 wide receiver or if Steelers should go after another top receiver to compliment JuJu? Thanks!
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
I think drafting a receiver is a strong possibility. I like JuJu and think he can be really productive with a good QB. But he was very average with a bad QB situation last year.

2:26
Good afternoon Ray except any more moves today more contract restructures ?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:27
Unless they done it in the past half hour since this chat started they'll need to tender Hilton, Feiler and Banner if they want to retain them. That has to happen by Wednesday, the first day of the new league year.

I see that Shazier has been placed on the Reserve/Retired list.  Is he continuing to progress from his injury?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:28
He continues to rehab, yes.

Do you get the sense that anyone in the building feels like Buggs could develop into the type of player Hargrave was in years 2-4? Or have we seen the ceiling, more or less?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:29
Well, Hargrave was a third-round pick and Buggs a sixth. So they thought more of Hargrave when they drafted him. They like Buggs and he can help fill the void, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you he can be the next Hargrave.

How much tampering goes on between teams and probable FAs before the legal tampering period? A lot of the deals seem to be made awfully fast.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:29
Why do you think the agents go to the combine?
Fredward
2:30
How big of a deal will the expanded rosters and practice squads be for the Steelers?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:31
It will be nice for all teams. The Steelers lost two offensive linemen last season because of injuries. Fred Johnson and Patrick Morris were picked up after getting cut because the Steelers were deep on the offensive line. So I think teams will be able to keep more guys like that.

Browns and Ravens are all in. Steelers need to do the same for the next 2 years until 7 retires?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
Isn't that what they're doing by tagging Dupree and keeping the defense mostly intact?

2:32
Hi Ray, did Vance MacDonald take a pay cut? Will we see a TE drafted, maybe in the later rounds?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
No. He merely restructured his contract. He got his money upfront.
Utah Jim
2:33
What do you think about trading for David Njoku? He still has two years left on his rookie contract although I believe the 5th year option has gotten a lot more expensive with the new CBA.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:33
He's been injured. Not sure if I'd take a chance on him.
Utah Jim
2:33
How likely is it Bud will get tagged in 2021 assuming he has another good year? The cap should increase significantly, and I see 2021 as the watershed year. After that Ben will be gone, most likely Pouncey and maybe even Haden. That will free a lot of money for Watt and Fitzpatrick. At that point maybe they could even afford to sign Bud to a long-term contract.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:34
What if they want to tag JuJu instead? I don't get the idea they'd go year to year with Dupree on the tag.

Hey Ray.  Ravens and Browns improved this week.  Steelers, not so much.  Could the Steelers finish third in the division?  I know a lot depends on #7's health, but he is not getting any younger and the RB position is tentative.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:34
They might be winning the offseason, but check back with me in November when it comes to the Browns.

2:35
Hey Ray, any chance that Edmunds will be groomed to play linebacker in certain defenses ala Barron?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:35
Perhaps, but who plays deep safety when he moves up?
ralph
2:35
The cutting of Mark Barron seems penny wise and pound foolish. He was respectable...especially during the 2nd half of the year. You know what you have with him. Why tack a chance with an unknown? What happens if Bush gets hurt? Just saying
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
Believe me, they're crossing their fingers Bush doesn't get hurt.
