Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat: 03.30.21

Taken individually...  JuJu's per-game photographer, "Building my brand," The over blown shoving match/fight outside a Calif bar (thought they were shut down?) All seem relatively minor and chalk up to immaturity but what Claypool did toward the end of last season's game against the Colts could have cost them the game if the refs flagged him... Think Tomlin is aware of 'that' incident?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:34
I am sure he is.

If the two best backs are gone, we could probably get Javonte Williams in the second round. Given that there appears to be quite a bit of value in the second and third rounds, do you think we might see the Steelers trade back to pick up picks that might get us Williams and a good TE like Freiermuth?  Also might save some salary cap space.

I won't rule it out, but it takes two to tango. Someone has to want that No. 24 pick.

Any chance that our RBs didn't succeed because the OL quality just wasn't there for run blocking? Should any get a second chance for RB1?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
No, not in my opinion.

I say RB then C in rounds 1 and 2. Then 3 rounds of defense OLB ILB and CB No particular order in rounds 3 and 4. This way you get 2 starters to help the offense. Collins as a backup in round 1 if both RBs are gone since he can play both LB positions.  What say you?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:37
Not a bad idea. We're on the same page in rounds 1 and 2.
Jerry
2:37
Do you think they will keep Edmunds
Ray Fittipaldo
2:38
For the coming season? Yes.

Hi Ray -  Bigger drop -off in your opinion - Dupree to Highsmith or Pouncey to Finney?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:40
That's a good question. Pouncey was pretty much finished last season so there might not be much of a dropoff there. Probably from Dupree to Highsmith, but that's not a knock on Highsmith.

So Ray will you answer my question or do you plan on avoiding it again like Gerry and Paul. Why is no blame placed on Big Ben for the horrible run game? He is reluctant to line up under center, thus being in shotgun with high takes away play action and causes the lineman to be in a two point stand, can’t win the leverage battle that way. His preference to throw short quick passes because his lack of mobility takes away the deep pass allowing safeties to cheat up and defenses to stack the box. Unless the whole offensive philosophy changes Barry Sanders in his prime wouldn’t be able to average 4 ypc so doesn’t matter what running back lines up

They hired a new offensive coordinator because the offense stunk last season. I am quite sure things will change. And yes, you might even see Ben under center once in a while.

I did a mock draft simulator and Zaven Collins was there at 24. I took him and Javonte Williams lasted until pick 55. How realistic is that and would you do it? Collins and Bush could be amazing together.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
That's realistic. They'd have to figure out how they want to use Collins and Bush in the middle because you'd have to find a way to play them both at all times. Otherwise, why pick Collins. And then it becomes a question of how opposing offensive coordinators look to attack you when you're playing two ILBs in your sub-packages. It's just hard for me to see an ILB in Round 1 for that reason, but I see the need to add some competition for Spillane, for sure.

Hi Ray enjoy these chats. Is there any indication that the steelers are planning on signing a center or are they happy with Finney as the starter?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
Right now, it would appear Finney is the presumptive starter, but I think they'll draft a center.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
I am wondering if I will write an article about the Steelers schedule anytime soon?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:46
Not anytime soon! I'm off the rest of the week. Happy Easter and enjoy the weekend. I'll do another chat next Tuesday.
