There are not a lot of teams that have legitimate shots at the Super Bowl if their franchise QB goes down. That's just the reality of the NFL. Unless you build your team around defense and the running game the way the Titans did. They came close, but they only made it as far as the AFC title game. The reason the Steelers aren't going to draft or sign a QB is because they have so much money tied up in Ben Roethlisberger. They have to allocate funds to other parts of the roster in hopes of building the best team.

Hi Ray, what are your thoughts Zack Baun for the 49th pick? He seems a bit undersized for a stereotypical Edge rusher, but seems to have all the skills and talent to be an excellent ILB. Should he make it that far, do you feel the Steelers would pounce? That would certainly be a heck of duo in the middle of the field w/ him & Bush. Thanks

Baun is a good prospect, but I'm still having a hard time envisioning a scenario where they draft a defensive player at 49. Maybe I'll be wrong.
I think that's definitely a possibility. And third round or after for both.

Hi Ray, since current LB depth (and the future outlook) aren't great right now, do Steelers draft both OLB and ILB?  And what round(s) do you think that happens?  Thanks!

  • Hi Ray. Does Darrin Hall fit into the Steelers’ plans at all? Liked his breakaway moves when he played at Pitt.
Ray Fittipaldo

Hall was a good back at Pitt, but when he was with the Steelers last year he was mostly on the practice squad. Not sure he fits into their long-term plans. Kerrith Whyte could be. They picked him up late in the season and has something the Steelers don't have at RB right now: speed.

Hello, Ray - Any chance that the Steelers might use  that late third and fairly early 4th (or more) to get them up higher in the 3rd Round or even latter 2nd? How much higher do you think it could get them?

I doubt it. When you only have six picks you simply don't have the ammunition to move up.

With the 17th game, will they be allowed to add to the players to the gameday roster?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:33
Yes. Rosters expand from 53 to 55 and game day rosters will expand as well.
But not in 2020. The 17th game won't happen until 2021.

Ray If you had to be quarantined for two weeks with a past (or current steeler)  who would you chose?  Personally I think Chuck Noll would be very high on my list.  Thanks and stay safe!!

Blake Wingle.

Or Pete Rostkowski

Knowing that injuries will happen and most players will leave in a few years anyways....why would the Steelers not take the best player available even it is on defense?  Hate to say it but a backup safety, ILB, or corner is likely to play a lot next year. Why not get a good one now?

I see your line of thinking, but the defense is set for the most part. They're a top-5 unit pretty much across the board. The offense needs a lot of help. That's why I think you'll seem them go for an offensive player with their first pick. You're more likely to get an impact player to help the struggling offense at 49.
OK thanks for all the questions this week. Back to my normal chat day next week on Tuesday. See you then.
