I think he or another center is a possibility in Round 2 or after. More likely Round 3.
Utah Jim
2:17
Ray, how would you handle Brian’s worse case scenario mock? I’m taking Collins or Farley and hoping Williams is there at 55.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:17
Farley has some injury flags. I wouldn't be crazy about taking him at 24 unless my doctors told me he'd be a 10-year player.
Jeffrey P.
2:18
Do you think DeCastro can play center & prolong his career? May open up the possibility to take a guard instead of center earlier in the draft i.e. Wyatt Davis, Aaron Banks, Trey Smith.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:18
Well, he's never played center, not even in practice so the answer is NO.

How would Harris fit with what Coach Canada wants to do offensively and if the Steelers go that way, can they reasonably get a potential LT starter for the season opener with their 2nd round pock?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:19
Sure why not? Alejandro Villanueva was an undrafted free agent. Starters come in a variety of ways.

Hi Ray, It looks like this draft will be QB heavy in early 1st round which means the Steelers will have a lot of options. I am for trading down to late 1st round to pick up extra picks. If the Steelers were to move to late 1st round, would it be possible to get an extra 3rd round pick?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:20
Depends on how far they move down.
V. Fontaine
2:21
I enjoyed your top five players per position in the draft. But I think you erred on the defensive tackles by leaving off Alim McNeill from NC State. I think he's better than Nixon and Shelvin and would be a nice pick up for the Steelers. He could play right away on running downs with a chance to develop into a player in sub-packages.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:22
Good player. A lot of DTs this year need to develop more and find ways to contribute in sub.
Scott from Erie
2:23
Colbert said this draft has a lot of depth at most positions except QB, TE and D-Line. I can't see them drafting a quarterback if they are truly focused on going "all-in" for this year, and they don't really need much help on the D-Line, right? So that leaves tight end...which ones do you think would be worth targeting on Day 2?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:23
Freiermuth, but I don't think he'll be there at 55. After him there is Tommy Tremble from ND. I think he go around the third round.

In your opinion what has been the main culprit to the Steelers poor run game the past few seasons? Scheme (Fichtner and BB’s proclivity to pass 40 times a game), poor OL talent, or poor talent at the RB position?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:24
All of the above. Mike Tomlin went out of his way to say the schematics were an issue last season.
2:26
The Steelers no longer viewed Nelson as an $8 million a year player. It's that simple.
Scott from Erie
2:26
Colbert said that Steven Nelson was a valued player for them but he didn't fit in the current salary cap situation...yet Nelson has stated in a radio interview that they didn't even approach him about a potential contract renegotiation...what do you make of that? If he was truly valued, shouldn't they have at least tried to get him to take a pay cut?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
Question to previous answer.

Hey Ray what’s your opinion on Landon Dickerson?  If he’s not drafted in the 1st round, would you trade up to get him in Round 2?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:27
I might take him at 55, but I don't think I'd trade up for him.

Ray, I loved how Tomlin thru Fichtner under the bus during the pre-draft presser!  You thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:28
I thought the same thing when I heard him talk about "schematics and formations." I asked some people about that and they didn't read it the same way I did. But I'm glad you did because that was my first impression.

Why do people on these chats seem to want the Steelers to sign Jesse James as a TE solution. He was average at best with the Steelers and worse in Detroit.  The Steelers have to be looking for a solid TE, early on day 3 or sooner, right?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:30
It's not a deep year for TEs, which is problematic, but if they like one at 55 or 87 then maybe they could go that route. Would be a little surprising though.

Random question but which can you see happening in Pitt first: 1) the draft or 2) a superbowl win 3) hosting a superbowl

As much as we get caught up on names, the best case scenario to me is that they can trade down, pick up an extra pick, and come away with one of the 3 top backs and get a center in round 2.  Agree?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:31
That would be a good deal, but don't be disappointed if trading down doesn't happen. There's a lot that goes into those deals.

Great article regarding the top 5 prospects at each position.  Very interesting reading, and much more enlightening than some of the mock drafts.  No question here, just much thanks for your detailed work and studies.

2nd round pick 55 of the 2021 NFL draft, Steelers have their RB at 24, Humphrey is off the board, Dickerson or Meinerz are still available. Who do the Steelers Take? Or who do you take GM Fittapaldo?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
If GMRF has the medical information and my doctors give me the thumbs up I'm taking Dickerson. If not, I'd have to go with Meinerz.

It’s the time of the year when all the so-called experts and insiders on the internet are “hearing” things about what teams’ preferences are. ESPN’s McShay had a column about everything he’s “hearing.” Some guy named Pauline said last week he’s “hearing” the Steelers have narrowed it down to three guys for the first round. Where, if anywhere, are these people “hearing” things? I would think that any reputable team source would be on strict orders to shut up or to only leak MISinformation.

Lots of people talk, but you don't know who is giving you the truth and who is trying to throw you off. Scouts talk, GMs talk, if you can find one that doesn't lie then he's a good resource.

With Edmunds in the last year of his contract and only an average performer, would you be surprised if the Steelers took a safety somewhere  in the first couple rounds?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
A little bit because they have other needs. I would not be surprised if they took a DB who can play CB and safety, one of those hybrid type defenders that all teams covet right now.

I see you more as a 'Head of Football Operations' than a plain GM.
