I don't think Ben was the biggest issue for that offense. The offensive line was a mess. They had a rookie RB and TE learning on the job and an underperforming WR corps. QB, in fact, was far down the list of things that ailed the offense although I admit his skills were greatly diminished from his prime.

Think the Browns will end up cutting Mayfield?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:48
If Mayfield is smart, he'll keep his mouth shut and be a good citizen. He's going to get $18 million guaranteed unless he does something stupid that allows them to cut him for the old detrimental to the team excuse. They'll make a move eventually. You know that based on getting Brissett and Dobbs.

If Steelers could to pick up one last free agent, what position in your view? CB? DL?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:48
I'll sat DL but only if it's a beefy nose tackle to help against the run.

Hi Ray.  Do you see any changes organizationally with KC's departure.  Specifically, more aggressive in draft, trades, etc. or more of the same.  Thanks.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:49
There is always going to be change with change. The new GM, even if it's an internal hire, will have some new ideas. Colbert even mentioned a month or so ago how the game was changing. He acknowledged there are differing views on how to do his job.

Green over Dotson? Do you think Dotson can ever be a starter?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:50
He might have to be if Green's transition to guard doesn't go well.

Their best player on O is Najee.  Do you see this offense becoming more run heavy with the O-line investment?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:51
More run effective is what they're after. Don't get caught up in the pass-run ratio.

Three ways to make a mediocre QB better.  Good offensive line.  Check.  Good running game.  Check,  Defense holding the score down.  Check.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:52
In an ideal world, yes. But you appear to be handing out check marks in a generous manner. We haven't even seen Daniels and Cole play yet or even see how they might fit in.

Thanks for the chats Ray.  So most have said all along that if Green is too small to play center then he must be really small to play guard.  Why Green at guard now?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:52
Because the center experiment failed.

Why a QB in the 7th round when you can get a fourth camp arm as UDFA?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:53
Or in a rookie minicamp tryout. See: Duck Hodges.

Bigger bust - Bush, Jones or Sweed?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:54
I always look at draft slot when asked the bust question. So Sweed is distant third in this conversation. Jones was a No. 17 overall pick and never did much. Bush No. 10 overall... Let's see how this season plays out, but it's not looking good for Devin.

Nobody seems to mention this, but if a number one draft pick allows for a fifth year option, wouldn't taking a quarterback in the first round instead of the second make sense. If The steelers took a quarterback in the second round, and hit lit things up, they would have to pay out an enormous QB salary much sooner.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:57
Yes that is definitely part of the equation when drafting a QB. Teams love cost certainty the way QB salaries have soared.

Do you now what cap room we have left to make moves once the rookies and Minka are signed?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:59
They have about $13 million in cap space right now, but much of that will be taken up by the draft picks. A new Fitzpatrick deal would lower his 2022 cap hit. So they still have room to make some moves, but not a lot.

Why the flame out with the previous OL coach?  Will this one be more effective?
Ray Fittipaldo
3:00
They need him to work out. It's been a revolving door at that position, and that's not good with a young line that is in transition.

Is camp/ preseason going to be more interesting for the beat writers because of the amount of change happening with the Steelers? (QB battle plus new o-line, new GM)
Ray Fittipaldo

Very unique, especially when you realize Colbert has been here since 2000 and Ben Roethlisberger since 2004. It's going to be very different.
OK thanks for all the questions this week. We'll do it again next week.
