There wouldn't be a penalty against any player who opts out. He just would not get paid his salary. I am hearing about some MLB and NBA players opting out. I think those sports are different. Football players have a limited shelf life and a limited number of years to earn big money. There might be a player or two that opts out due to family concerns, but I don't think you'll see a lot.
