That move could be coming if no one from the outside is signed.

When is the last time a steeler talked trash before a game and actually backed it up?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:25
Can't recall, but I like how Kyle Shanahan pulled a Belichick and went right after Peterson, who might as well have had Anthony Smith embroidered on the back of his jersey.

Lots of guys banged up Sunday. Cam and DJ are the big ones but any updates on the others (Freiermuth, Leal, etc.)
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
Freiermuth and Leal and James Daniels could play, Tomlin said.

Does Canada not realize after 3 years that the jet sweep is a college play?  I read an article somewhere that said the Steelers have not gained 400 yards since 2021. Every other team has done it at least 3 times. The team has had a lot of players in that time and at least one grouping should have accomplished it. The only constant here is Canada. He needs to go. I don’t know what he has on Tomlin.

Hi Ray... thanks for the chats.  Any chance the Steelers will run a jet sweep Monday against the Browns?
Ray Fittipaldo

First play of the game ha ha
Kentucky Kelly.

Longtime Reader. First time questioner. What happened to the offensive line?  They seemed to get bullied every play. No space to run and Kenny having a guy up in his grill immediately
Ray Fittipaldo
2:29
I think Pickett had some happy feet. He might have felt pressure when there wasn't a real threat there on a few occasions. Again, Tomlin didn't have a big issue with the way the line played.

Why did the Niner's have the appropriate cleats on  our home field and the Steelers seemed to be playing at the Igloo?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:31
Great question. More preparedness in their pregame routine I would guess. No other way to explain it. Another area where they outperformed the Steelers -- their choice of footwear.

Let’s not overreact to the first game of the season against a team that was in the NFC Championship game. However, the Steelers were completely dominated in all 3 phases and that is cause for concern. I had the game ass a tossup but it is a little worrisome they looked like they played their JV against the 49ers varsity. Now with the injuries…….  Maybe it is time to panic.

I pointed this out earlier today in a story (https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/steelers/2023/09/12/mike-tomlin-br...) I wrote following today's news conference. The Steelers have a way under Tomlin of bouncing back. They did it last year after losing to Buffalo by 35. They came back and won the next week against the Bucs. It's the NFL. Things change week to week.

Ray, I love your weekly report card. Over the past 4-5 years it seems you have issued quite a few Ds and Fs for coaching.  Why do some fans and media continue to insist that Mike Tomlin is a great coach? It has become laughable.
Ray Fittipaldo

Thank you Jim!

Ray, I see the Niners as the front runners in the NFC as long as Brock Purdy is healthy.  Was week one the worst possible match up for the Steelers ?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:35
I'm sure the 49ers had something to do with it, but it's hard to ignore how bad the Steelers were in so many facets. That's concerning.

Ray, looks like enough blame for everyone, O, D and coaching. I’m concerned that even with the best defense you have to score more than one touchdown to win. Even if Tomlin can turn things around do you think this offense is capable of ever playing a shootout game with a playoff caliber team?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:35
Hell no.

Which rookie do we see more of on Monday night - Benton, Jones, or JPJ?

Is our depth on the D-line good enough to tolerate the temporary loss of Heyward?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
Tomlin said he likes the depth there, but it's going to be hard to replace Heyward. Tomlin even hinted they might have to be creative in their scheme to make up for his loss.

You're never as good as you think you are, but you're also not as bad as you look.  Was Sunday just a bad loss to a good team, or are we really that bad?
Ray Fittipaldo

An old line from JoePa. Maybe somewhere in between

Please talk the wild fans off the ledge. We're not as good as the preseason showed but we're also not going to go 0-17. We will most likely end up in the hunt for a playoff spot week 16/27

Hi Ray, thanks for the chat - I'm usually pretty patient and understand the Steelers' way of not making changes for the sake of making change, but at what point does Tomlin's messaging wear thin? Even good coaches (Andy Reid in Philly, McCarthy in GB) need a change of scenery after a while, so I'm wondering how many times do the Steelers need to do the same thing (not show up in a big game, lament that they didn't "execute", run the same tired JV offensive script) before AR decides enough is enough? No playoff wins in 6 years doesn't seem to do it, so what will?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:39
Let's see how the other 16 games play out first.

2:39
Which do you think Steelers fans are more irrationally angry about - jet sweeps or Tomlin's "coaching tree"
Ray Fittipaldo
2:39
Or ILBs falling down in coverage
Tampa too
2:40
Ray. What did you think of Tomlin’s decision to take the ball after winning the coin toss?  I would believe most coaches would rather defer to the second half. Your thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:41
He was trying to set the tone...and then he greenlighted a jet sweep on second down. If you're going to do that you had better be confident you have a play caller who can build some momentum for you on the first drive.

Where was Pickett's "great" running ability?? Rudolph has better yards per carry in a Steeler uniform than the other 2 wannabes.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:42
I pointed this out in my report card after the game. How many times late in Roethlisberger's tenure did we hear about QB mobility and how important it was? Pickett HAS to use his athleticism. He's not good enough as a pocket QB to do what other QBs in this league do.
Nate from Fort Wayne
2:42
Hi Ray. You're the Steelers O.C and you see the opposing D rushing their front 4 and dropping their 3 LB's in coverage repeatedly, what plays do you start drawing up for Kenny P?
Seemed that's what the Niners were doing most of the game and Steelers Offense couldn't do anything major against it.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
Establish the run and then run some boots off run-action, maybe even some designed QB runs.
Alan F
2:44
When the offense does not take a shot of throwing deep and challenge the opposing defense, is that by design from Tomlin/Canada or is KP just "gun shy"?
