Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat: 10.08.19

Watt

Why was Watt on the sideline in overtime when Ola got the penalty?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:28
I'd have to go back and watch, but he does pull himself out of games on occasion. It is curious that it would happen so late in regulation (not overtime), but I'd have to go back and watch to see why he exited the game.

Any chance the Steelers start dumping players in a fire sale right before the trade deadline?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:28
None.
Tampa Too
2:28
I thought this game was one of the worst officiated games I’ve ever seen. There appeared to be bad calls on both sides. It was a flag fest    Your thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:29
I agree with you It's an embarrassment to the NFL.
Paul
2:29
I'm real pleased with the effort past few games especially with all the QB injuries. I thought the coaches and players did a fine job. Things are bound to get better I like the future of this team, your thoughts? Love your work Ray!
Ray Fittipaldo
2:30
I like the way the defense is trending. But I can't say the future is great when Devlin Hodges is going to play Phillip Rivers in LA on Sunday night. You lose that game you're 1-5 and the season is over.

Ray,   Were you surprised how well Duck played?  I thought he looked more confident than Mason throwing the ball.  How did you see it and his chances this week?  Thank you for your insight.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:31
I was impressed. He also scrambled 21 yards for a big first down to set up the late field go-ahead field goal. There's something about him, but let's get real. When Mason Rudolph is healthy he's going to be the starter.

Would you Trade Tomlin to the Skins for a 1st rounder? What's the minimum you'd take?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:31
5 first-round picks.
Pete
2:32
If Pitt needs to call up Lynch to qb, who do they cut?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
We'll find out Saturday. I don't think they make that move until they have to.
Melissa
2:32
A 2 point loss, a 3 point loss, a 4 point loss and a loss to the best team in the nfl that's only given up 2 td's in 5 weeks. Are the Steelers really that bad?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
I don't think the Steelers are bad, but it's nearly impossible to make the playoffs after starting 1-4.
Mary
2:33
Prediction for Pitt's end of season record and what percentage chance do you give them to make the playoffs now?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:34
1 percent chance to make the playoffs. And right now, I'd say they'd do well to go 5-11 or 6-10. Still think they beat Miami and Cincinnati again. The Browns aren't good. The Colts are playing with a backup QB. You still have the Cardinals on the schedule too. I'd be shocked if they don't get to five wins.

Do you feel like Thomas should be suspended?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
When was the last time someone was suspended for a hit like that? It was a bad hit. He launched himself into Rudolph's jaw. Maybe the referee should have ejected him. But I don't think he'll be suspended. He'll get a fine, maybe a steep one if he's a repeat offender. But the NFL doesn't usually suspend guys for hits like that unless you're a multi-time offender like Vontaze Burfict.

How often will we see the wildly effective Wildcat against the Chargers?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:37
After what happened last week it might be banned forever. Plus, Samuels is out for a month with a knee injury. I don't think we'll see the wildcat this week in LA.

Hey Ray ,  What is the story behind coaches not being held accountable in Pittsburgh?  Danny Smith has been the ST coach for 6 years and other than finding Boswell on the FA heap after failing miserably finding a replacement for Suisham what has he done.  The ST unit has been a major liability for Steelers - haven't had a returner since AB and last year ST cost us 3 wins with missed FGs when something was obviously not right with Bos.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:39
I don't disagree with you about the special teams. And it's true Smith has been around for a long time. But the players have something to do with this as well. They just don't seem to find enough capable special teamers to make a difference.

After seeing the Browns last night it sure looks like 9-7 will win the division. Any shot Steelers can rattle of some wins and get to 8-7 or 7-8 and make week 17 interesting in Baltimore?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:40
Maybe, but they'd have to pull off a few upsets for that to happen. No better place than this week in LA.
wburg412
2:41
What do you see that merits them continously putting Switzer back to return other than maybe Diontae Johnson.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:41
Johnson had a fumbling problem in the preseason. So I think that's the issue.
Paul
2:41
BTW Thank God Mason is ok!

ray im out of here heading to beautiful d.c.  thanks for the chats!
Ray Fittipaldo
2:42
Will you be back for tomorrow's practice?
Bradshaw
2:42
I remember when you'd get knocked out like that once a week, they'd just say your bell was rung and shake it off, then go back out there in a couple plays. But then we realized the brain is important. So people are saying it was Rudolph's choice to walk off? So then what do we decide to let him drive himself to the hospital also? How could people let that happen? Get a damn stretcher.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
Tomlin addressed that today. He said the medical personnel who evaluated Rudolph believed he was OK to walk off. He said the cart's mechanical issue (or whatever the issue was) was not a factor in him walking off. Tomlin said Rudolph wanted to walk off the field and the people who evaluated him thought it was OK for him to do that.

In your opinion, is there any chance we trade Tomlin?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
No.
Dj Cain Arkansas
2:45
How much of the blame do you place on Randy Fitchner
Ray Fittipaldo
2:47
He's the OC so he'll get some blame for what's transpired with this offense. To me, the biggest issue is a lack of a running game. With a young Qb and this defense, it would be a no-brainer to lean on it. But apparently, there is no confidence in the line or the RBs because we keep saying the same things every week -- shotgun runs for minimal gains and all the pressure falling back on the QB to make plays on third down. That's not going to produce good results when the QBs are young.

2:47
Ray good work by the way! If we win Sunday is there still a chance we make the playoffs?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:48
In this division, yes. But it's a tall task to go to LA and beat Phillip Rivers with Duck Hodges behind center.
