I think you're right. They'll close out the first half of the season with division games versus the Browns and Ravens. Only one division game in the second half. Would feel very good about their chances in the AFC North if they won both. They'd still be in the hunt if they lost to the Ravens, but it would be an uphill climb.

You talk of wasting a number 1 draft pick to get a guy like Peterson, when they used a first for Burns who is a bust.Keenan Lewis, Joe Burnett, Crezdon Butler, Curtis Brown, Cortez Allen, Terry Hawthorne, Doran Grant., Senquez Golson,Gay were all drafted and only Gay got a second contract. One number 1 draft pick won't hurt the Steelers. They have a poor track record on defense.

But here's the thing. Let's say they miss the playoffs, go something like 7-8-1 or 8-7-1. Now they're getting a top 15 pick or thereabouts. You'll have a chance to get a really good player there. There is a big difference between picking lower in the first round than the middle or top of the round.

Ray, The Steelers don’t have a #3 receiver right now. Do they move to Hunter, keep working with Washington who can’t get separation from NFL quality cbs or they activate Rogers even though he is primarily a slot receiver?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:17
Not sure what Hunter can add. I think they're hoping the light goes on for Washington.

Ray, Thanks for the chat...seems to me that our O line  has been the key to the Steelers success. Ben has been kept clean, nice holes for Conner, the D is kept fresh, and drive killing penalties have vanished on offense. What say you Ray?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:18
That's been a big part of their turnaround. They have to keep it going, especially against the Ravens. That was not one of the line's better game a few weeks back.

Hey Ray.. Thanks for the chats. Do you see them activating Ola at any point in the next few weeks? That group has been fairly inconsistent all season.
Ray Fittipaldo
11:19
I didn't get that sense when I talked to Ola last week. He was just kind of waiting for words from the coaches. He is healthy and wants to be activated, but the coaches are kind of waiting to see if anyone else has to be activated from IR later in the season.

Ray the Browns have shown that they can score, albeit inconsistently, if Sundays game is a woeful one for the Steelers D, could we be looking at a shoot out?,
Ray Fittipaldo

I expect the Steelers to handle the Browns at home. I am not expecting a close game. Not saying a blowout, but if the Steelers are going to be contenders, they have to beat up on bad teams at home. I still consider the Browns a bad team.

prediction for sunday?
Ray Fittipaldo

Steelers 38, Browns 10.

When can Ola come off IR?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:21
Ola came come off IR anytime now. Once he practices the Steelers have a 21-day window to evaluate him and decide if they want to elevate him to the active roster.

Any thought as to why we seem to be able to hit so consistently on WR draft picks and do so poorly with CB draft picks? Are the scouts more focused on offense? Is it a coaching issue? Thanks for answering!
Ray Fittipaldo
11:22
Good question. I don't have the answer, but you're right. Their track record on defensive backs in recent years is not very good.

Ray, early, but Steelers greatest needs, cb, “Mack” linebacker, rush linebacker, #3 receiver, offensive tackle, your thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:24
Your first three are true, but I'm not panicking about Washington yet and Chuks Okorafor was drafted in Round 3 to groom into a starter someday. Plus, let's leave the draft talk for when they're eliminated from playoff contention. They're in first place now. I can't do the mock draft thing yet.

Ray-here are my top 6 AFC teams...agree? 1.NE 2. KC 3. Balt 4. SD 5. Pitt 6. Hou
Ray Fittipaldo
11:25
Not sure I'd put Houston in there. The top five is pretty good.

Why does it seem the Steelers game plan against the Ravens is different than vs other teams?  Seem timid
Ray Fittipaldo
11:27
The Ravens are very hard to run against because they have a big nose tackle in Brandon Williams. They can make you one-dimensional. I thought the Saints did a nice job of going for it on fourth-and-short and taking calculated gambles. I think you have to do that to beat the Ravens, especially when you're on the road.

Ray-any idea what Tomlin's record is coming off a bye week in the regular season?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:27
9-5 since 2007 but 1-4 over the past five years.

Saw the Bears use a two back system with Howard and Cohen in at the same time.  Could Steelers try it with Conner and Ridley/Samuels?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:28
Sure but Conner seems to do better with a steadier workload. I like what I've seen the past few weeks. I'm not looking to make a ny major changes to the way they're distributing carries.

How are we in First Place!!!  (Love it!) Ravens are going to be the Ravens (our nemesis), and the Bengals will still stink ( see Dalton and Marvin Lewis,) Steelers will destroy the Browns this week (we owe them that)- Can we now admit that the Steelers demise (can't win without Bell) has been exaggerated (at least by National media types)?
Ray Fittipaldo
11:29
They're back in it, but the next two games are very important because they're division games. Won't mean anything if they come out and lay an egg in the next two weeks.
Rich
11:29
End of the year and Bell is gone.  Is it true we would probably get a 3 rd pick except if we sign free agents would that change
Ray Fittipaldo
11:29
Yes a compensatory third-round pick. Will be at the tail end of the third round.
11:30
Ok thanks for all the questions this week. I'm headed out to practice. Will let you know if Le'Veon shows up. We'll chat again next Monday.
