Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat: 10.24.23

Because they like Dan Moore and believe he's a good player.

As an ex offensive lineman, what’s your take on the Jones v Moore decision?  Is Jones really not ready?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:25
My take is Jones isn't ready for a full-time gig as a starter. At least that's why I think the coaches think.

Do you think the return of Dionte Johnson will improve Kenny's development? How nice would a 300-yard passing game be!
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
Hey they had 300 yards of offense against the Rams. That's progress!
Steve in Canton
2:26
Would it be a benefit for the Steelers to start their opening drive in the 2-minute offense?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
It would be a benefit to do anything other than what they've been doing early in games.

2:27
Ray, do you think they’ll pick up Harris’ option yr?  Subsequently extend him?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:30
Tough call because Warren is now firmly in the rotation and gets about half the touches. I'm not dodging the question, but I don't think it's a tough call. He can help them, but I'm  not sure he'd be worth the option year for a first-round RB.

Ray, what needs to happen for JP Jr to officially take over the outside and push Peterson to the slot permanently?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:32
Tomlin said today Peterson "essentially is Cam Sutton." Sutton played outside in base and then inside in sub-packages. And even some safety on occasion. So I'm not sure Peterson ever is "replaced" so to speak, but it will just depend on opponents and their personnel packages and tendencies.

Hi Ray, thanks for your time. Does something about the offense (tempo, play calling, etc.) change in the 4th quarter? Is that why Pickett plays better late in games? Or is there no explanation for the disparity we're seeing?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:34
Tomlin was asked about that today. He kind of avoided the question and pointed to Pickett's ability to step up when the game is on the line. I don't think he answered the question because he honestly doesn't know. If you recall last week he said spend every waking hour trying to get Pickett to play early in games the way he plays late in games. I'm sure if they had an answer they would have better success early in games.

Hi Ray, will we see Darius Rush getting any snaps at outside or slot CB vs. the Jags on Sunday?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:35
I highly doubt it. They're just getting to know him and getting him acclimated to the defense and the team environment.
Chris
2:36
Hi Ray, Levi Wallace is terrible. Why do they continue to allow him to play at all when literally anyone else gives them as good or better chance to be competitive?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:37
I see the frustration with Wallace, but it's either him or James Pierre playing in the dime.
Diana Ross
2:37
Ray, representing all of Divahood, this Pickens fella has all the attributes to make it to the top. Your thoughts, if any? Gracias.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:38
I agree. He has the size, speed and hands to be a top-flight receiver. He's getting there week by week. Two 100-yard receiving games in a row. And I think he has even more to give.

What are you hearing about Mt. Washington? I believe I saw Hot Rod on the field way more often than him Sunday. You think maybe they're regretting letting Gentry go?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:41
Sometimes it takes time for rookies. Plus, Tomlin said today the Rams were scheming to make it hard for the Steelers to run. Washington is best as a run blocker now. That's been well-documented. Williams is the better receiving tight end right now. Doesn't mean he will be next month or next year, but right now he's better in that area than Washington.

Ray, I don’t recall LA being a stronghold of black and gold ism? Is this a new phenomenon on the left coast?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:41
It's a phenomenon wherever the Steelers go.
Dan
2:42
Hey Ray, thanks for the chat. Really enjoy your articles too. Do you think they’ll get Washington involved in the passing game any time soon? He’s another rookie that was praised as a great pick that seems to be underutilized…at least as a receiver, thanks.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
I just think he needs to work on his receiving game. And he might never be a No. 1 TE. He might be a really good No. 2. He's a third-round pick.

If Washington needs help catching passes what is practice for? Have him catch 100 balls a day during the week.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:44
There's more to it than getting on the JUGS machine after practice. There's route running and lots of other things that play into it.

Ray next three game in a row at home I can see 2-1 with the loss coming this Sunday vs the Jags what say you?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
2-1 would be really solid in this three-game stretch.

I heard it said during the game that T.J. dislocated a finger and set it himself. The sideline reporter for radfio told the guys it looked like a "hamburger patty." No sign of it after the game at the presser... Think T.J. will have a career in sports medicine after he's done playing?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:46
You'd be surprised by how many players dislocate fingers and stay in games. That's why Watt played it down on Friday when he was asked about it. Everyone who's playing in Week 8 is dealing with some malady.
Dan
2:47
The penalty on 18 could have cost us the game. Any idea how a veteran can have so little situational awareness? I understand that it’s an emotional game etc etc, but that was just senseless
Ray Fittipaldo
2:48
I agree with you. It's different now than it was in previous generations. Players grew up playing this way. It's part of their experience. We can scream all we want about how Tomlin should make it stop, but it's part of today's football culture from youth to high school to college.

Did you make it to the beach or pier last weekend in LA?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:49
I was in L.A. for about 36 hours. Enough time to have a beer poolside Saturday night but that's about it.

2:50
Is Cole Holcomb on track to play Sunday?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:50
Seems like it. He came back in the game against the Rams.
Tenor
2:50
Tomlin made many comments regarding the tenor of the officials.  Considering the spot that the officials gave on the 4th down play helped to win the game, is that wise to talk bad on the folks that helped you win?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:51
I thought that was Mike's way of acknowledging the calls were questionable without getting fined.
Brad Garrett
2:51
Ray. Thoughts on Percy Harvin this year?
