You have to run in that situation. It's up to Conner and the line to get a yard. It shouldn't be that hard.

Many appear to want a replacement for Spillane who has played well. I think at times too much emphasis is placed on “pedigree” and certain physical traits. What seems to be lost in the discussion is that some of these “lesser” players perform well due to their work ethic and football smarts. I’m not saying Spillane is going to make All Pro. But he diagnoses the plays well, and his tackling technique is from a past era and is a thing of beauty. Thoughts?

I agree. They are 7-0, 2-0 with Spillane as a starter. There is no reason to replace him now. Let it play out. If he struggles then you have a bona fide NFL starter in Williamson ready to play. That's why it was such a good move by Colbert.

Ray, What are your thoughts on John Harbaugh's gripe that Fitzpatrick should have gotten a penalty on the last play? Have seen the play multiple times from different angles and I just don't see it. I would say coach Harbaugh be careful what you wish for. If the refs start making calls on plays like that it's gonna come back to bite a team like yours in the  butt eventually. And by the way where was his concern for player safety in 2010 when Hali Ngota broke Ben's nose and NO penalty was called?
Ray Fittipaldo

He spends too much time around his brother and Tom Crean.

My take on Baltimore on their ability to have rushing yards last Sunday. Our defense was geared up to shadow Jackson. So we are going to give those yards to RB's. Plus , they ran the option in 2nd half & the defense probably didn't work on that option. Our defense never quit attacking & hitting the ravens.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
There were times when the RBs would get 3 or 4 yards on first and second down to set up third-and-short. The Steelers just have to do a better job of getting off the field. The Ravens converted 53% of their third downs. That's too many, especially when a few of them were third-and-10 or more.

Ray, did you notice that Connor was slipping all afternoon? Maybe a cleat change was an order?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
I noticed Conner and the WRs were protecting the ball. That maybe had something to do with his tentativeness. He wasn't running with much decisiveness. It seemed like he was more worried about not fumbling.

Isn’t the NFL using the quick type Covid test? It seems ridiculous that you would test someone Sunday morning and not get the results till after the game.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:46
Tomlin said today they get results in 24 hours, sometimes sooner. So it's not a "quick" test.

Is J. Layne getting more PT?  Saw he was in on last play at goal line.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:46
Yes he played in the dime with Sutton up at nickel in Hilton's place.

Has Highsmith passed Ola on the depth chart?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:47
It would appear so, yes. And that probably happened in training camp.

Ray, did you see that Dalton has been added to the Covid list for the Cowboys? So he will not be in uniform on Sunday.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:47
When did this happen?

I can't help but wonder how different the questions here would be if Minkah did not knock down that pass.  Great play for sure but if they had lost, the defense would be taken to the woodshed for sure.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:49
Tomlin openly admitted today they have to play better. I think he realizes they were fortunate to win that game and really fortunate to be 7-0. The defense is very good, but there are some issues.

Harbaugh is still crying about the last play.  Will they put Alualua onIR for 3 games and activate someone from the practice squad?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:50
They don't have to put him on IR to bring a DL up from the practice squad.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:50
The Dalton news is above. I guess it will be Dinucci on Sunday.

High smith looks good so far.  Is he a potential replacement for Bud Dupree next year if they can’t keep Bud?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:51
Yes that's the plan.

Knowing what you know now - and I know Claypool had a 4 touchdown game - do you think Claypool was the better pick for the Steelers over Dobbins? Connor could have held the position down this year and then Dobbins takes over next year as the 3 down back. He sure looked like a strong runner.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:52
Dobbins looks good but so does Claypool. Let's see how it plays out. I think it's easier to find RBs in the draft.

Not so fast on DiNucci. Ian Rapoport says they are contemplating activating another guy from the practice squad. Cooper Rush?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:53
Who? They should sign Clint Longley

Thanks for the chats, Ray.  I've seen a lot of articles referencing Harbaugh being upset about Minkah going high on his receiver on the last play. Minkah was clearly playing the ball - his hands were up, shoulders up, totally clean.  Harbaugh knows this, right?  Is he lobbying for the next matchup already? And the PF called on Heyward when LJ still was clearly inbounds - ridiculous.  Was that called to try to set the tone because the refs understand the heat between the teams?
Ray Fittipaldo

No, he's just a whiner.

What are PG's plans for Cowboys games? You and Gerry going to Dallas this weekend?  How many fans do Cowboys allow in to games now.
Ray Fittipaldo

Yes Gerry and I will be there again. My first trip to Dallas since Super Bowl XLV

Has anyone ever gotten more mileage from one football game in the history of the NFL than Clint Longley? It's been 46 years on Thanksgiving and still we remember!

Plus he once punched Roger Staubach in the face!

OK time for me to get back to work. Thanks for chatting. See you next week.
