Wait and see obviously, but I'm thinking the changes will be positive. It might take some time to mesh, but I think this secondary will be better.

Most likely positions to draft given the 7 picks (barring trades):

Looks like we are on the same page. Scary thing is, I didn;t look at your second questions until now...

Do you think there are really 5-6 first round grade QBs in this draft, or is there over drafting because of the position?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:36
Overdrafting definitely. But that happens every year.
Andrew
12:36
If the Steelers are truly interested in going after a qb round 1, do you think Tomlin and Colbert get Ben's opinion on the prospects?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:36
No they do not.

Do you think the new targeting rule is a good thing?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:37
I think the new targeting rule is going to cause lots of confusion and controversy. I do think their intentions are good.
12:38
When they moved up to take Polamalu I think they gave up their first, their third and a sixth. That was to move up 11 spots. So probably something similar to that.
Mark
12:38
I'm sure it's all smoke and mirrors but I read an article where Steelers want to trade up with Seattle to select an ILB (Evans). Again, who knows how true this is but what is your opinion on moving up 10 spots? How much would they have to give up? I can't see them giving up their 2nd round pick. It would have to be a 3rd and something else, right? I think we need to keep the picks and see who's available at 28.
Ray Fittipaldo

Question to previous answer.

12:38
The steelers need ilb but with the 28 pick it comes down to best available. I could see a safety or a starting Gaurd for it is foster last year under contract.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:39
You might be right.

Hey Ray, while Ben said he wants to play approx. 3 more years, it's unlikely the Steelers will be drafting any higher than they currently are for those years. Having seen Rudolph play against Pitt, it looks like he has the tools. In light of the defense needs, if he's available, would you draft him?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:39
Not in the first round. Maybe later in the draft.

What exactly did the Steelers gain by swapping Robert Golden for Nat Berhe? Was it money, ability, or age that resulted in Golden's release?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:40
I think they got a little younger and Berhe is a little cheaper.

Ray it looks now as though Steelers can draft according to their board, now that starting positions have been secured. Still, some depth weaknesses right now: RB, ILB, S, OL, DL. Has this shifted your view of who they draft first 2-3 rounds?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:41
Just like you said, they don't have any immediate needs. They truly can take the best player available on their board. If it happens to be an ILB they'll take him. But it can now be a number of positions.

Ray,   I have to believe the Steeler's front office know Bell will not report to camp and wait til the 1st game so they should not be upset with his antics.  No way he stays out for games.  Too much money he would lose.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:42
Yep too much money. I don't think he'll do that.

Any chance Dobbs unseats Jones at backup QB and is there any cap savings if that happens?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:43
I don't think that will happen in 2018. Probably in 2019 if they like Dobbs because Jones is under contract for only one more year.
JERRY
12:43
Who do you think the Steelers will draft in the first round?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:43
Leighton Vander Esch or Rashaan Evans if they are on the board.

Hi Ray, Sometimes the Steelers like to pounce on a faller at a non-obvious position of need at the time or who no one thought would fall to them in mocks (e.g.: Mendenhall, DeCastro).  Is there a name or two you can see falling into that category to override obvious MLB and S needs?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:44
C James Daniels of Iowa. I mentioned him earlier when I was asked a question.

If the Steelers cant get a ilb to their liking with their 1st round pick which of the potentially available safeties do you see them considering?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:45
Jessie Bates of Wake Forest is a possibility. They visited with him before his pro day. Fits their profile, too. He's young and his best football is ahead of him.
Jack Schuster
12:45
Saw Marcus Allen of PSU play. Jack Ham who does their games likes him a lot. Great tackling safety, top five all time at PSU, special teams, etc. Someone who would fill needs for Steelers.Projected all over the place in the draft. I think he would make a solid #2 choice and may be gone at #4. What say you? Thanks
Ray Fittipaldo
12:46
Probably third round or later for Allen. Don't think he's a guy they would consider in Round 2.

12:46
Given that "infamous window" won't stay open forever do you see the possibility of the Steelers packaging some late round picks this year to  move up in the second and third rounds?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:47
That's always a possibility if there is someone they like, and they feel like they have to make a move to get him.

Why is everybody always so eager to get rid of Landry Jones?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:47
I don't know. He's a solid backup. They're hard to find in the NFL.
Kyle
12:47
Do you think the asking price for Leveon would go down this year if he misses a couple games due to injury?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:48
Depends on the type of injury. But short of another major injury I think some team will be willing to break the bank for him.
