Do you expect the Reds to revisits talks with the Royals for Brady Singer? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/08/reds-targeted-brady-singer-at-t...
Anthony Franco
10:29
Makes sense to check back in. Nothing in that report suggests they were close or that the Royals were all that interested in selling low on Singer though
Kurt Stillwell
10:29
A high AAV, short term (2-3 year) contract seems liken a perfect fit for the Reds current payroll situation. Which starting pitchers might be candidates?
Anthony Franco
10:32
Maeda was mentioned earlier. He could fit. Marcus Stroman could opt out and sign a high-AAV two-year deal. Frankie Montas probably takes something like that or a straight one-year reclamation contract. I think that might be too risky given his health history but it's certainly preferable to running it back with another Luke Weaver type
Blue Man Group
10:32
Brewers also have an option on Canha so he may only be available via trade
Anthony Franco
10:33
Yeah should've been clear on that. The Canha option is a borderline one for me but certainly possible Milwaukee accepts it. I think he'd get around the $9.5MM they're deciding on somewhere else if they buy it out, just depends on how they want to manage payroll with a large arb class
Catcher
10:33
I think this position needs upgraded in a major way. Is there any chance they look to move off of Tyler Stephenson? The amount of double plays that he grounded into in crucial situations this year were very alarming and his defense wasn't that great. Maile was a much better defender.
Anthony Franco
10:34
Yeah this is a tough one. I was all in on Stephenson last year. The '22 injuries were fluky, expected he was going to break through as a top five catcher this year and it obviously didn't come close to happening
10:35
The free agent catching class is bad outside of Mitch Garver, who's better suited for a hybrid C/DH role. There's not a ton of obvious trade candidates. I'd give Stephenson another shot at it rather than trading for Joey Bart or signing Gary Sánchez, but it was clearly not a good season for him
FCJ
10:36
Hicks, Chapman, and Suter (Bob loves a hometown connection) as RP adds. Giolito on a 1 year prove it deal. Realistic off-season?
Anthony Franco
10:36
I still think Giolito does better than one year -- at least could find two with an opt-out -- but any of the relievers you mentioned seem viable
Ohio River is Clear
10:37
Do you see Freidl and Fraley continuing to be successful or career yrs?
Anthony Franco
10:38
This will probably be Friedl's best season but that's because he basically played at an All-Star level. I'm in on him as a solid everyday center fielder, does everything  pretty well
10:39
Fraley's a solid LH platoon corner outfield bat. Nice rotational player to have but not a building block
Red Machine
10:39
If Votto returns how does Encarnation Strand get every day AB? Assuming Votto, India. Mclain and De La Cruz start in the infield. Who draws the short straw between Strand & Steer?
Anthony Franco
10:40
If they bring Votto back, it has to be with an understanding that he's a part-time player at this point. I don't see the justification for giving him regular reps at the expense of Steer or CES

10:40
Will senzel be gone to a rebuilding team? (A's, Nats, etc)?  Maile end up as a starter somewhere with casali and Stephenson in house?
Anthony Franco
10:41
Maile's a career backup. Did his job this year, should've earned another big league deal, but the Reds could bring him back
10:42
Senzel, yeah, I think it's time to move on. Not sure there's even a trade out there at this point. Other teams could just wait out a non-tender. Either of Oakland or Washington make sense to throw him $3MM and give him a shot at third base, sure
Chancy
10:43
What was your thoughts on the promotion of Nick Krall? Is he the guy to lead the reds for the next decade+?
Anthony Franco
10:45
Expected, given the team's performance this year. I still wish the front office would've been more aggressive at the deadline in '21. If they had an idea the payroll cuts/teardown were coming, they should've pushed in harder to get to the playoffs that year
10:46
But the retool has gone well. They've hit on their big trades. The Mahle deal could be one of the more lopsided trades in recent memory. Marte looks like a good get for Castillo, they sold at the right time on Winker to offload Suárez (even though he has bounced back in Seattle). The last couple drafts have gone well
10:48
Still need to see that this front office can bring in the right MLB talent from outside the organization to take the team to the next level. They came up empty on rotation help at the deadline this summer, for instance. But they very quickly built the farm system and are positioned pretty well for the future, so it makes sense to give Krall time to see that through
Mike
10:49
I have trouble believing the Reds actually spend significant money. If they move Arroyo and/or Collier, for a pitcher in similar situation, not yet called up, ready, possibly blocked, is there 1-3 guys out there? Who? Thinking the dodgers or mariners would have been a match before they ended up calling up all their pitchers.
Anthony Franco
10:51
Wouldn't say there are specific "blocked" starting pitching prospects necessarily. Teams can find room for those guys, but Detroit and Miami have a decent amount of young starting pitching and could use infield help
Chase
10:52
How fast could Rhett lowder move through the system? Could he get the mike leake treatment? Had success in college.
Anthony Franco
10:54
Can't project anyone to do the Mike Leake thing of jumping directly from college to the majors. There's a reason the most recent non-COVID example is from 13 years ago
But I could see Lowder up late next year if they're in contention. Advanced college pitcher getting to the majors at the end of his first pro season is doable
Tyler
10:55
Do you get a sense that GABP is an actual cause for hesitation with FA pitchers? Or are these guys so confident in their abilities/contract-conscious that it doesn't matter as much as fans think it does?
Anthony Franco
10:58
Having Derek Johnson as a pitching coach probably counters that somewhat. I'm sure it's a factor for some players, especially if you're a Luis Severino-style reclamation project. But Sonny Gray signed an extension there immediately, Hunter Greene stuck around. Most guys are just going to take the money if it's competitive
Mike Rizzo
10:59
Jonathan India for Lane Thomas?
Anthony Franco
11:01
I like this one. Guessing both teams would rather keep the guy they already have -- India's beloved in the clubhouse, Nats seemed to value Thomas more highly than the rest of the league -- but I think they're comparatively valuable and would actually make better sense for the other team than they do on the current roster
11:02
Alright I have to wrap this up
11:03
Tim's going to run a White Sox chat in an hour if anyone has interest in jumping over to that
11:04
I'm on Twitter @affranco10 if you want to send any other questions there. I also do Friday afternoon chats for Front Office subscribers where I get to the majority of the questions with the smaller queues
Thanks for hanging out! Enjoy your afternoon!
