Hi all! Welcome to our Reach for Excellence Summer School Webchat. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you have about next week’s residential. No question is silly and what you ask might help other people who are attending, so don’t be shy! We’ve got 3 members of the Contextual Outreach Team here today ready to answer all of your questions. Remember that any general questions not related to Summer School should be directed towards the RfE inbox at reachforexcellence@leeds.ac.uk, but bear in mind it may take us a while longer than normal to get back to you!

If the chat is busy then we’ll be typing at breakneck speed to respond to you all, so please be patient if we take a while to get on to your question. The vast majority of you have been allocated your first choice of activities for the week, but we’re not able to provide individual allocations (we are busy prepping all our paperwork and all your treats and activities for next week!). You’ll receive a personalised timetable at the beginning of the week.

It might also be quiet! please note this doesn't count towards attendance for anything and is simply your opportunity to ask any questions which is quicker than waiting for an email response. You can dip in and out of it as you please - if it is quiet - we will close the chat earlier than 6!

Hi, I’m just wondering what we need to pack regarding clothes?  For the formal dinner, is there a dress code?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:04
Have you got the handbook now which has our kit list in it? no dress code for the dinner and disco- just what you are comfortable wearing but many people do dress up. Doesn't need to be a suit or prom dress

how many bathrooms per flat?
AvatarMolly

At the very most, you’ll be sharing a Jack-and-Jill-style en-suite bathroom with one other person.

What building is the accomodation during the summer school in? and are boys and girls separated into different corridors?
AvatarJames Leslie

We are staying in Henry Price Residences - Just like university halls, you won't know exactly who your flatmates are until you arrive. As you are under 18, we are bound by the NSPCC and government guidelines that state our accommodation needs to be separated by gender, so male and female students will not be sharing accommodation. You'll get your own individual room which is just yours, and then you'll be free to socialise in the communal living space in the flat with other students. You can also spend time in the other flats too if you have more friends there! We encourage you to get to know new people, but Molly has also used the names you listed on your choices form to place you with someone you know where possible. Please don't worry though - we don't spend that much time in flats as we are out and about for most of the time!

What time is the curfew in accomodations and what time do we need to sign in, in the morning
AvatarJames Leslie
4:10
Lights out is 12am at the absolute latest but many students will go to bed earlier than this as we keep you so busy and you get really tired! your flat ambassadors will ask you to leave the flat each morning at 8.30am

Hi James, when you go to the cash and carry, would you be making sure everything you buy is suitable for vegetarians and alcohol free?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:13
We only work with Under 18 Students so I'm not sure why you are asking about Alcohol as that is illegal!? - Yes evening snacks will cater to students registered dietary requirements

Is breakfast a buffet?
AvatarMeghan Clamp

Is there a certificate at the end to evidence that we went to this summer school?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:17
Yes and we will supply you with information about how you log the summer school on UCAS. You get to log the residential and the programme more generally separately as universities like to see residential evidence

For the outdoor activites, what type of shoes would be best?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:22
A closed toe, non-slip shoe, like trainers would be perfect! Open-toe shoes, canvas footwear or ballet style pumps are not appropriate and if you have expressed interest in attending herd farm/clip n climb you wouldn't be able to take part in this type of footwear
