Hello everyone! James and I are with you today to hopefully assuage some of your “University Worries” – we’ll be typing at breakneck speed to respond to you all, so please be patient if we take a while to get on to your question.

Just as an FYI – your Easter booking confirmations are on their way so please bear with us! If you have any queries about confirmations we’d really appreciate it if you could hang on until tomorrow to email us :)

Is doing a degree and a part time job at the same time hard?
AvatarMolly
4:03
Hey Shaiza, I had a part time job all the way through my degree and I actually found it really manageable! I was fortunate in that I had a zero hours contract that I could make work for me, and my hourly rate was pretty good. It definitely takes a bit of time management but by no means impossible!

Do you get to choose who you want to stay with in student accommodation?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:04
Hi! it depends on what universities you are applying to. You can indicate on application forms that you wish to be placed with a particular person. We do lots of sessions on accommodation in Year 13 and will show you the forms :)

Not related to Leeds University, but what are the biggest differences between Universities and colleges (eg Imperial College London)?
AvatarMolly
4:06
In some cases they're actually the same thing - Imperial is actually a university in its own right, as is UCL. There are some unis that have a collegiate system (Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Lancaster off the top of my head) but this is more like the different houses you might have at school and college!

is the rfe programme ongoing in year 13 as well?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:06
It is indeed - you are stuck with us now until you get your A Level Results!

Do you have a department that can help you in terms of your career choices?
AvatarJames Leslie

all of our students have access to our Careers Centre. The Careers Centre helps students make decisions and plan the next steps towards a bright future. From finding work or further study to working out your interests, skills and aspirations, they provide you with the expert information, advice and guidance you need and all universities will have one :)

thats a good thing :)

We think so too!

How do you work on time management
AvatarMolly
4:09
Organisational tricks can help you here - maintaining a good calendar system, planning out your semesters when you get your timetable so that you know when your busy/quiet periods will be, things like that!

what would you say is the most difficult to deal with as a university student?
AvatarMolly
4:13
Good question! I think for me it was being disciplined - I had a lot of independent study time so it was very easy for me in first year especially to not work as hard as I should have been, because I wasn't always in class and so was expected to do a lot of work and reading in my own time. It's a big change from anything you've done before, so I think people will all react to it differently. I had access to quite a lot of support from the uni through things like my personal tutor, the library, and the student advice centre, so although there are challenges there are also lots of people to help you deal with them!

For specific courses, will there be open days or is it just for the overall University?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:10
in Year 12 it is just Open Days for the full uni. in Year 13 we invite students to applicant days which are specific to the course and that's when you have secured an offer

if I want to take a gap year would the lower grade requirements still work a year later?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:10
yes :)

Are there specific areas where you can pray in university?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:11
there's lots of places for our students (and staff) to pray - take a look at this :) https://students.leeds.ac.uk/prayercontemplationfaithsupport

Does going to a non-Russel group university affect career prospects?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:12
absolutely not! I didn't go to a Russell Group Uni - its about what's best for you - a degree is a degree at the end of the day.

How does the subject/course choices work? I mean can you do multiple courses at same time like mechanical and electrical engineering?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:13
you can study joint honours courses (so 2 subjects) but not in engineering you would need to choose Mechanical or Electrical

What if you didn’t book anything for Easter holidays, will the sessions repeat for the next holiday
AvatarJames Leslie
4:14
our next events after Easter will be in Spring Bank (May/June Half Term) events don't repeat, but there will be lots more on offer. Easter is our last academic taster block until Summer though
Shaiza Mehmood
4:13
When applying for courses do you pick your first three courses or do you just have to pick one course and send that off to all unis?
AvatarMolly
4:14
Are you coming to Get Set for Uni in Easter? We'll go through a lot of this info in that session
Simran Bahia
4:14
When applying to a university, can you only apply to one course at one university?
AvatarMolly
4:15
No you can apply to as many as you like, but I'd recommend spreading them out a bit!

What happens in the instance of a gap year?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:15
in what sense?

4:15
If you don't get the a-levels you needed, can you still apply though clearing or is it only for some courses
AvatarJames Leslie
4:15
It really depends on the course and the university. At Leeds last year we didn't have any available vacancies in clearing
Shaiza Mehmood
4:15
If I didn't attend the first get set for uni event can I go to the second one?
AvatarMolly
4:15
Yep!
Ellie T
4:16
with the RfE course would it effect our chances of getting into uni?
