What effect is Warner dropping the regional sports networks going to have on this offseason for them.
Anthony Franco
9:29
This is a really good question to which I don't think anyone has an answer yet. The impact of the potential RSN collapse hasn't really been felt around the league yet
9:30
MLB stepped in to cover some of the money the Padres lost when their network went under this year. I have no idea if they'd do the same for the Rockies, or if the Rox will be able to line something else up over the winter that mitigates some of their losses

What are the chances Kinley is their closer in 2024?
Anthony Franco
9:31
I'd guess Lawrence gets the first crack but I could see Kinley pitching his way into the ninth during the year at some point

How do we evaluate pitchers that reach free agency in Colorado?  Aren't we smart enough to subtract like .35 or something from their ERAs?
Anthony Franco
9:32
More than anything, I think they're trying to look past the results and just evaluate the raw stuff. Tyler Chatwood got three years and $39MM coming off a near-5.00 ERA because the Cubs loved how well he spun his curveball
9:33
(Turns out the results were more indicative in that case)
9:34
Jon Gray got four years after posting a 4.59 ERA. Carlos Estévez got decent reliever money (albeit less than I thought he should've) from the Angels after an up-and-down career because he throws hard

Zac Veen arrives in ...
Anthony Franco
9:35
Would be '25 in an ideal world but the main concern is just that he gets healthy first
9:36
It's obvious the hand injury was destroying his power for a while. Hopefully the surgery puts that behind him for good and he can have a real season at Hartford next year

9:36
Will Helton get into the HOF this year?
Anthony Franco
9:37
I think so. Got over 72% last year, the voters typically nudge a guy past the line once they get that close
9:38
I think that's the right call. He'd be on my ballot
Josh
9:38
Do you think Bud Black will be back next year?
Anthony Franco
9:39
Yeah. They extended him in February, they're ostensibly going to bring in a markedly different pitching staff than the one they trotted out this year
I know they expected to be better than they were internally, but a) this team was never actually going to be good and b) what hope they had was mostly built around the rotation, all of whom got hurt

Has there been any change in the industry perception of the Rockies under Bill Schmidt? They were known as a "difficult" team to work with under Jeff Bridich.
Anthony Franco
9:41
I assume this refers to trade discussions? I don't know that they're much more willing to deal under Schmidt than they were with Bridich. Schmidt has continued the general pattern of extending their guys and holding role players even if they're impending free agents. Moved Pierce Johnson and Brad Hand this year but kept Brent Suter, for instance

Do you think the Rockies need to think and operate in a way that other teams do, and if so what would be your strategy?

If given the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat for this franchise for upcoming offseason, what would be your top 3 (realistic) priorities to make them actually competitive?
Anthony Franco
9:43
I don't think there's a realistic way to make them competitive in one offseason. The big thing is just trying to take whatever fliers they can on rotation options
9:44
Once the White Sox were out of it, they rolled the dice on Deivi García, Luis Patino and Brent Honeywell -- former top prospects who'd all been squeezed out by their previous teams. Will any of them work out? I don't know, but that's the kind of thing the Rockies should be trying
9:46
Are the Guardians selling low on Cal Quantrill? If the Tigers are going to non-tender Spencer Turnbull, why not send them a 35 FV level prospect? Does Marco Gonzales have a place on the Mariners?
9:47
They're not great solutions, but there's a little more upside in a change of scenery dice roll like that than in bringing in Chase Anderson, Jose Urena or Chris Flexen
Rodeo clowns are athletes!
9:48
Is the failure to have recent success at developing prospects more attributable to lousy development or lousy drafting.
Anthony Franco
9:49
Generally haven't loved the picks themselves. Some of it is bad luck -- Rolison, Veen and Hughes have all gotten hurt -- but Benny Montgomery was a project from day one because of a weird swing path. Toglia didn't have much margin for error with the bat as a college first baseman
Billy
9:50
Why has Sean Bouchard been getting so little playing time? Is he injured? Seems like they should be seeing what they have here.
Anthony Franco
9:52
He was hurt most of the year and didn't hit for any power in Triple-A after the arm surgery. If you want to argue for him getting a few at-bats over Montero, that's justifiable, but I don't think they were ever going to find out much about him after he got hurt in Spring Training
It's unfortunate because this would've probably been his shot after a decent small-sample performance as a 26-year-old rookie

9:53
From what you've written above, it seems like 'plus command' might be a requirement for pitching at Coors
Anthony Franco
9:55
It helps but I don't know that it's of more outsized importance in Colorado than it is anywhere else. Ty Blach and Chris Flexen can throw strikes, but they don't have the stuff to miss bats at an above-average rate and they get hit hard when hitters know they have to challenge

9:55
When do you expect the Rockies to be a playoff team and why isn’t it until 2032?
Anthony Franco
9:56
Ha, the earliest I think it's a legitimate possibility is 2026. They'll need a lot between now and then, but the position player group could be quite good at that point

9:56
Do you think we'll have a top defense next year
Anthony Franco
9:58
Should be a really good defensive infield at least. Doyle's an awesome center fielder but they can't afford to give him another 500 PA's unless he takes a major step forward offensively. A corner outfield with Jones and Bryant, if they put him out there, seems average
10:00
Not sure what to make of Elias Díaz. Pitch framing metrics consistently hate his receiving. Plus arm with strong reviews for the blocking. I imagine Drew Romo will be a better defensive catcher if he replaces Díaz as the top guy towards the end of the year though
Alright I have to take over news coverage from Mark

Thanks for hanging out for an hour. I'm on Twitter @affranco10 if you want to throw any additional questions at me
