I understand Cullen wanting to play for the Wild this season.  Once the trade deadline gets close, you feel the Penguins will get him back for the playoffs in a minor trade?
Sam Werner

I mean, I wouldn't rule anything out, but the only scenario where that works is if the Wild are out of playoff contention, which I don't see happening.

Is Matt duchene a possibility?
Sam Werner

He's probably above the Penguins' budget at this point.

Would the pens reach out to jagr?
Sam Werner

As fun as that would be, it's not a fit. They need a center, not a winger. They have plenty younger, cheaper wingers.

Instead of getting just a 3rd line C, I think the Pens need 2 bottom 6 C with there lack of depth and if Geno or Sid get injured, Carter Rowney is ur 2nd line C. Do u see them picking up 2 C's in the future?

I think that's certainly a fair line of thinking, but at a certain point they're going to have to turn to their internal options at center. I think in a short-term injury situation, that's why they've got guys like Greg McKegg under contract (also, he has a great name). It'll be interesting to watch in training camp, though, how much run Zach Aston-Reese gets at center, and how close a guy like Teddy Blueger is to NHL-ready. Those could be a couple variables there.

I have really enjoyed the Penguins Prospectus series.....any chance of adding where the player came from, i.e. Draft year and position or trade info?  Really like knowing how the player got to the Pens.
Sam Werner

Good idea! We'll start working that in.

Sam, if you were the Pens' GM, who would be your top two choices to replace Bonino at 3C? Inside or outside the organization
Sam Werner
1:52
Top choices would have to be outside the organization. I feel like Tyler Bozak has been mentioned over and over again in connection with this spot, but it's because he probably would be a pretty good fit. The other guy I'd be interested in is Riley Sheahan from Detroit. The Red Wings need some cap relief, and Sheahan is coming off a miserable season, so he shouldn't be too costly. But he does still have good offensive skills and high upside. Plus, he's only under contract for one year at just over $2 million, well within the Penguins' range.

If you had to put % on it, chances Will Butcher comes to the Pens?
Sam Werner
1:53
I'd probably say maybe 30-35%? There are enough teams involved that it's hard to be too confident, but the Penguins also have to present a very, very appealing option for him.

As I was looking over the roster today I noticed there is a few open spots on the forth Line could we possibly see a Rowney Sprong Aston-Reese line?
Sam Werner
1:54
I don't think so. When Sprong and Aston-Reese come up, I'd expect them to be top-six guys.

If the Pens are going to win a third straight title, is it more likely to be driven by phenomenal play from Crosby-Malkin-Murray or by newer contributors like Guentzel maximizing their potential?
Sam Werner
1:54
Porque no los dos? You need everything to go right to win the Cup, so it'd have to be both,.

I like the Reaves pickup. I think other teams took liberties on the Penguin players, not worried about anyone standing up to them.  Crosby, Malkin etc needed someone to protect them.  I remember one game when a opposing player challenged anyone on there bench to fight.
Sam Werner

Yeah, I mean that's why you have a guy like Reaves around, for the rare cases when you could use a guy like that. The key is (and what they're hoping with Reaves) is that he's a good enough all-around player that he's not a liability for the other 90% of the time.

OK, that's gonna have to wrap it up for this week's Penguins chat. Thanks all for joining in. Jason's back next week, and we're just about a month away from training camp opening up. Thanks again!
