Hey all! Welcome to our weekly Monday chat. Appreciate everyone all year long coming out, asking questions or even just reading things afterwards. Three weeks to go, and you all are still bringing the volume. So let's get started ...

Do you think Castillo makes his start this week?
Brent Hershey
12:01
I have no inside info or have heard anything further ... but the way he exited, my guess would be no, he at least skips a turn if not more.

Hi! In playoffs in 12-tm, H2H, category w a bye this week. But what I thought was pretty good pitching has shown true colors — unreliable (Peralta, Pivetta), innings-weary, still developing young SPs (Baz, Festa, Williams), or washed up (Kershaw)! Want to drop one (possibly two) of Festa, G Williams or Heaney (good remaining schedule … vs SEA … then @OAK or @LAA) to add bat. Your preference(s) would be?
Brent Hershey
12:04
I'd trust the Festa/Williams skills more than the Heaney veteran savvy, even with a decent schedule like that (though OAK not the pushover with the bats of previous seasons). Festa's metrics, especially, say he deserves better outcomes. Good luck next week!

Good morning Brent0Great time of year as we now have both baseball and football. I have 2 NL 2025 prep player questions for a 5x5 12 team auction draft dynasty league Question #1: I have to activate Fernando Tatis who is in his last year so who do I drop I have Mookie Betts $45B, Jordan Walker $5 B, James Wood $5A, Seiya Suzuki 36A or Jacob Young $5A thoughts ? Question #2 Corner recommendations for next year-who would you keep between Elly De La Cruz $2B, C.J. Abrams $17 2026, Christian Walker $29A, Isaac Paredes $10B, Alex Bohm 22A and Ke'Bryan Hayes $10A-can only have 4 of the 6 if I use one in Utility.
Brent Hershey
12:10
#1 - Think I would drop Walker out of that group. Suzuki faces a big uphill climb to return that salary in 2025, though.
#2 - With the year he's had and the struggles to live up to his prospect hype, I'd think there's little harm in cutting Hayes at this point. Would probably try to squeeze by with the rest, though next options would be Paredes and Bohm.

Hi Brent.  These chats are a must-read every week.  Add me to the list of those wishing they occured more frequently.  I'm in a 16 Team mixed 5x5 Keeper League.  Trying to stockpile players ahead of next year's auction.  I may be able to stash Endy Rodriguez as a minor leaguer per my league's rules.  What does your crystal ball tell you about the Pirates catching situation next year and over the next few years?
Brent Hershey
12:15
Thanks for the kind words, LWS!
Feel like Endy is a good stash. Bart may be in that mix also, but there are enough questions about Davis—and the MLB performance has been so uneven—that I'd be surprised if they kept him at catcher given these other options. But the front office had been pimping Endy as early as this time last year; seems like he's their preferred long-term option.

In a 5 keeper 12 team mixed league are and Caminero  Holliday a potential 3 year keepers?
Brent Hershey
12:18
Yes. I prefer Caminero pretty strongly between the two, partially b/c he's shown the BA + PWR so far. Holliday is likely to be a more well-rounded fantasy player, but lacks the loud tools of JC. Both so young, though.

For 2025 is there a wisdom to down grading starting pitchers after the top 5 after the crazy number of pitching injuries this year? The focus on velocity seems to have increased the injury risk among top tier starters.
Brent Hershey
12:23
I think the problem with going with that approach is going to be finding enough Ks; those top pitchers are often velo monsters with yes, more injury risk -- but ones that strike out a ton if they don't break. Feel like we do need to focus on velocity/injury risk a bit more, but is kinda a team-construction issue. I may be more apt to grab the Logan Webb/Ranger Suarez types as my #2s and #3s than other years, when I've often shot for a fireballer potential in that range. This will be discussed in the offseason/preseason for sure.
Bob
12:26
Do you think Jared Jones will be shut down? He's just warming up.
Brent Hershey
12:26
I do not. Feels like his injury time off served as his "shutdown"; I'd think PIT would roll him out over these last three weeks on turn. Right now, he's about even with 2022 and 2023 workload (~120 IP); another 3 starts or so should get him into that 130-140 IP range which is often about normal as teams try to slowly ramp up a prospect's innings.
Bob
12:28
Do you think Robbie Ray will be effective over the last two weeks?
Brent Hershey
12:28
Yes — within the realm of any TJS returnee. The fact that this injury was a hamstring and not arm-related is a good thing.

Thanks for your help all year!
id like to know your thoughts on Puk getting saves ROS.
for 2025 (maybe ROS) thoughts on FAABing COOK, Collins, Conine- a few dollars may net me a decent hitter
Brent Hershey
12:32
I'm not counting on Puk for save chances here in the final three weeks. Think they would have shown their hand that way if it was a a possibility.
Conine has the best chance of that trio to contribute somewhere meaningfully in 2025. Still kind of a longshot, but better odds that the other two, I'd say.

Great chats all year.
I am fighting for first in a 6x6 mixed rotisserie league. My roster has been pretty balanced over the categories. Need some advice for this week/ROS:

  1. I now have available at MI Andres Gimenez, Trevor Story, Tom Edman, Tyler Fitzgerald, Xavier Edwards. Can only use three.
  2. Trust the "new" Jordan Walker or the slumping Heriot Ramos.
  3. Joe Jimenez or any suggestions for holds down the stretch.
  4. Thank you.
Brent Hershey
12:37
Congrats on the great season! My takes:

  1. Edwards, Fitzgerald and ... Gimenez, probably? Going guaranteed AB and track record here.
  2. Think I'd stick with Ramos
  3. Jimenez is probably as good as any. Maybe if any of the PHI (Strahm/Hoffman/Kerkering) or LAD guys (Hudson/Banda/Phillips/Kopech) are avail, I'd consider them? Look at winning teams, of course.
  4. Of course!

H2H playoff time! Will say again, thanks for all the great advice throughout the season, which really helped to get me this far. A two-parter if you don't mind (12 team 5x5 OBP - one week win or go home):

1. Just when Robles rightfully retook the leadoff spot, he went down with an elbow HBP. Would you hold knowing there's a risk he won't be ready to return tomorrow, or drop for Tyler O'Neill (7 games, 3vL), Nootbar, DeLuca, Josh Lowe, Joey Ortiz, or T. Ward? (position doesn't matter; SB nice-to-have but mainly want all-around production).

2. Would you drop Adley (who has had a miserable 2H and may be playing hurt) for any of Bart, K. Ruiz, Langeliers, Amaya, Melendez, or B. Naylor? (Bart seems surprisingly tempting given small sample breakout and matchups)
Brent Hershey
12:43
  1. I'd probably hold Robles. If not, Tyler O'Neill is a worthy choice. Josh Lowe (tons of PT) also.
  2. Bart is pretty intriguing, yes. Langeliers also. Think I might drop Adley for either one of those; just b/c we're in ride the hot hand territory.

Seemingly insignificant one but would help me today.

In saves/holds mixed league:  JMantiply or MLeiter ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:45
No such thing (insignificant) with three weeks left!

Leiter ... just a touch more chance he gets a save then Mantiply. Though Mantiply a solid choice also.

Would you drop either Pepiot (tough matchup @CLE) or J. Jones (vs. KC but not until Sunday and some risk of getting bumped) for any of Gore (vs. ATL, vs. MIA), Detmers (@MIL, vs. CWS), Herz (vs. MIA) or Pfaadt (vs. MIL)? (5x5 QS, need to win one week playoff)
Brent Hershey
12:46
Would drop Pepiot for Gore or Herz. Play the matchups at this point.

Any word on whether/when Alex Cobb is scheduled to make another start? Also, any concerns about using him given the blister issue? Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:49
Seems like he's lined up for a 2-start week = Tue vCHW; Sun vTAM. Second start could be risky given the blister problems ... but I think it's likely he gets at least one start sometime this week. I'd probably have him active.

Would you start either DeGrom or Yamamoto this week over S Estes and Osvaldo Bido?
Brent Hershey
12:50
deGrom - yes; Yamamoto - no (almost 0% chance at a win; last rehab outing was only 2 IP). Would prefer Estes > Bido this week.

Never thought I'd be frustrated with Royce Lewis staying on the field, yet here he is apparently healthy amidst an extended slump. Anything concerning under the hood? Wondering if there is more of a book on him now that he's been an everyday player for an extended run.
Brent Hershey
12:53
Big GB spike in 2H, especially in August. That can mean timing is off. And always a risk that he's not fully healed from whatever his last injury was. The "book" conjecture could be a part as well. I hear your frustration.

Does Jonah Bride have a chance at grabbing 400 AB next year in Miami? He has shown an above average BB rate, good contact skills, and a little pop in his 190 AB sample so far? Or is he a 28-year organizational type who does not get a longer look on a team in perpetual rebuild?
Brent Hershey
12:54
I'd say the latter. Might hang around for a year or two during a rebuild, but not a centerpiece or foundational type player.

NL-only 5x5 2 catchers 12 keepers. How would you rank the following for 2025 keepers, first to last? Any big gaps?  Stallings, Matt Shaw, Condon, Pages, Ian Anderson, Bubba Chandler, Ben Brown, David Peterson.
Brent Hershey
12:57
This rank is for long-term value, NOT 2025 production:
Condon, (andy) Pages, Shaw, Chandler, Peterson, Brown <big gap> Anderson, Stallings.

How do you decide whether to hold on to a player at a low price when he hasn't even earned that this year?  For example, in an NL-only keeper league, I have players coming off the IL and have to cut at least two of Bobby Miller $6, Frankie Montas $8, DL Hall $3, Eduardo Rodriguez $11.  None of them earned that this year, any of them could potentially earn more than that next year.  How to tell which to keep and which to cut?
