Good Monday, everyone! Thanks for maneuvering around that "other" sport that I hear started back up recently! :-) Three big weeks left in the regular season; looks like y'all got questions aplenty, so let's get to em!

How much of a hit in a dynasty league does Dominic Smith take with his poor 2021. Bounce back next year or is being starting outfielder in 2022 and beyond up in the air?
Brent Hershey
12:08
It's a concern for sure. I agree with Keith Law, who mentioned on a podcast this weekend just how Smith is getting squeezed in a DH-less Mets lineup. He's much more talented at 1B, but is not going to make Alonso sit, and since he's not a MLB-quality OFer, his chances for everyday PT are a bit limited. Maybe one or more of those elements change between now and April 2022 -- in which case I like the bounce back possibility. But if we go into next season and he's still being listed as a OF option ... that's not the best option. In dynasty, you might just have to wait until circumstances change. Think he can still be productive; just in a bad situation as-is right now.

Great Content, Brent. 12 team NL only, traditional 4x4.  Trying to hang on in offensive categories.  Whose better for this year (and next), Seth Beer or Lewin Diaz?
Brent Hershey
12:12
I see we're getting all the NL needs a DH questions up front, lol. It's probably Beer in both cases (did that without even realizing it and hating myself now); the fact that Aguilar has been so good and still has an arbitration year left means Diaz has more of a road block than Seth. Both have short MLB track records, of course.

hey Brent - you counseled Rosario over Cutch last week and Rosario outperformed him in half the ab's. But that's the problem, just 12 ab's last week and the other half of the platoon, joc perderson, is not performing. any reason to think rosario will get more ab's (power is good, ba poor but maybe more reps would help). thanks much
Brent Hershey
12:19
Not really been a straight Rosario/Pederson platoon, though (and both LHH); they've had a handful of games in the same lineup. Haven't seen signs that Rosario gets more AB than he's getting, though in a vacuum I like him more than Jock. Lots of RHP lined up vs. ATL this week, tho, so maybe it shifts some this week. ATL obviously in winning games mode right now.

hi again Brent - do you think it likely that Eloy Jimenez is hurt? only ba remains and that with a 38% hit rate. Needing hr/rbi most and have option to go with Adell or Kepler. What's your call?
Brent Hershey
12:22
Think it COULD be bothering Eloy, but I'd still be starting  him over Adell and/or Kepler. Better surrounding lineup, for one. Think you'll kick yourself harder if you'd sit Eloy and he turns out to out-produce those other two.

Hi again - surprised not to see Bobby Dalbec make Market Pulse yesterday. Two really good months with across the board improvements in skills and results. How come?
Brent Hershey
12:24
Because we're not able to cover every single player in that column. :-) Spit-balling, but could be that he's been picked up enough that isn't making the filters for that article. On Dalbec himself, you've definitely identified some growth in 2H that he's been able to capitalize on. Was lamenting myself the other day not picking him up in a few places where he was available ~1 month ago or so. He's sneaking back into the Sox plans for 2022, I'd think.

Who do you prefer longterm at catcher in keep forever dynasty: Eric Haase or Travis d'Arnuad?
Brent Hershey
12:29
I'd slightly prefer d'Arnaud, even with the age difference. Haase's strikeout problem has been persistent throughout his MiLB career, insomuch that the BA is a serious cost to his power. Yes, d'Arnaud has trouble staying healthy, which likely won't get better with age ... and that's why it's "slightly" (and the "forever" is probably shorter for d'A than Haase). But still give the nod to Travis' track record.

Hi Brent!  Thoughts on Joe Ryan's start v Cleveland tomorrow?  The HQ 8 day scan is showing the MIN starter as TBD.  Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:33
Noticed that tool thing this am ... we'll look into it. I'm tentatively optimistic -- it's not perfect-game stuff by any means, but the deception/vertical approach angle stuff is there (meaning he gets more out of his arsenal than you'd think, throwing just low-90s). Seeing him for the second time in a week mutes my expectations a bit, though -- although wasn't like they figured him out mid-game or anything. I'd feel fairly confident to start him (and am doing so in an AL-only league of mine this week)

H2H point league (1 - Single, 2 - Double, etc..) Championship week and need thoughts on 1B (Cron, Belt, Dalbec, or Candelario) and DH slot (Brian Reynolds, E. Escobar)
Brent Hershey
12:38
Our hitters ranks for the week (given opponent/ballpark ratings) says Dalbec and Escobar. BUT ... my guess is that you also need to factor in volume (Belt has a 7G week; Escobar has a 5 - but MIL runs away w/ facing the league's worst pitching group this week). I'd still probably go Dalbec/Esobar, but Belt could be in the conversation for either slot. Best of luck!

Brent, thanks as always for doing these weekly chats, especially as we get to crunch time. I'm in AL-only 5x5 league. 2 quick questions: 1) Is Joe Ryan for real? 2) Is Chafin the new closer in Oak? Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:41
Of course; these are fun.
1) Think he's a mid-rotation guy at best, more likely a 4/5 starter ... BUT has the type of characteristics that could pop here in a reduced timeframe (like, in the next 3 weeks). COULD, remember. :-)
2) That's my take, yes. Happened to be listening to OAK radio broadcast last week a few times, and that sure seemed like the prevailing message that I took from that announcers' chatter.

Keeper questions: acquired both Tylor Megill and Aaron Ashby as inexpensive free agents. Are both candidates for 5th starter roles in 2022? Megill looks like he just needs to limit damage from LHB, and Ashby has a chance at decent W and K totals pitching for a good offensive team with an excellent bullpen.
Brent Hershey
12:43
Yes, I think both are nice late-season plays if you're looking for cheap SP options for 2022. Keep your expectations in check -- sounds like that's the case -- but enough interesting things going on with both to throw a few darts at this point. The flip side: when it comes to keeper decisions, neither of these two will likely demand much draft capital, though, in 2022 either.

Insight into Giolitto coming off the IL for Tuesday? I know that is the plan and haven't seen anything to prevent that. I have other viable options (Suarez, Webb, Lauer), but Giolitto has the best match up.
Brent Hershey
12:47
No real insight to him coming off the DL ... but given the run that Webb has been on and the fact that the ChiSox have to be looking to October more than Sept does give me some pause. But,  yes, probably Gio is still the best call here.

Strategies for H2H playoffs, managing pitching categories. Do you emphasize streaming to accumulate counting stats or focus on quality to control ratios?
Brent Hershey
12:49
Has to be a mix, right? I'd probably give a slight edge to quality, though, if I had to choose one ... just more very good things can happen in that scenario. Other option? Dance with what got you there, and (as much as possible) enjoy the moment! Congrats BTW...

Any idea if Sale will be back this week?  Would you bench him to start Gonsolin or Carlos Hernandez?
Brent Hershey
12:53
These are just so difficult .. I benched Sale in the one league I had him for this upcoming week. Seems like Sunday would be the earliest, and we just don't know what the severity of the COVID case was; if it will affect his workload, etc. He's still coming back from injury and has (understandably) NOT been light-out Sale so far. But ... given you other choices (and your format/category situation), yours might be a spot where I would start him and cross my fingers. I hate playing both sides of it, but might keep him in if I were you.

12:55
Hi Brent, who would you chose at 2B (Cesar H, Kiki, A. Diaz or D. Moore)  and OF (Walsh, Blackmon, Kiki, J Meyers, Taveras) in a weekly points league (need RBI, HR)?
Brent Hershey
12:55
Ugh, 2B one is tough ... probably Kike; Cesar a close second.  For OF: Walsh; hoping hot September continues.

12:58
Merrill Kelly or Pablo López coming back?
Brent Hershey
12:58
pretty pessimistic on Lopez, given MIA is out of it and they have numerous other SP options. Kelly is a mystery, as I'm sure you're aware. I'd give him a better shot than Lopez of returning .. but the bar is low. Maybe ARI needs him more for a start or two late.

Thanks once again Brent. Chasing wins and k's. Rich Hill 2-start (vWainwright and KyleGibson) or single start Elieser Hernandez? Does Hill get any additional bump beyond hq ratings in that neither opponent has faced him? Many tx and good luck on your end!
Brent Hershey
1:00
Hill first-timers: no real discernible bump, no. But given your needs, I'd say you have to roll with the more opportunities that Hill gives you even though the W shots look long.

Playing time/effectiveness for ROS for Alford, TsuTsugo & Beer?
Brent Hershey
1:02
In general, I'd rank them Alford, Beer, Tsutsugo -- that just on fantasy skills alone. Each should get ample opportunities over the next three weeks, and you're just hoping for a hot streak. In the theoretical where each "hits" on that streak, I'd think that order projects their potential value ROS.

Hi, Brent.  If Bassitt comes back, his starts will be against Houston and/or Seattle.  He's struggled in two starts against both clubs this year.  Would you still roster him in 12-team mixed leagues where available?
Brent Hershey
1:05
I'm not as worried about him struggling against those teams, as I am him getting back on the mound after that horrific injury. In 12-teamers, I'd think there are better risk/reward options IMO.
Oh, and that's not to say I won't be rooting for him to succeed or I question his fortitude ... it's just asking a TON for anyone to expect 2021-Bassit-like starts if he gets there.

Streaming hitters looks tough this week. Brett Gardner on the wire, HW likes NYY this week. Worth a stash or too limited PT?
Brent Hershey

Worth a stash; been playing really well (and often) recently.
