Hi Seren, are you there?
Seren
11:03
Hi everyone, yes I am here.
Lisa Rosier
11:04
Thank you so much for giving up some of your time today to speak to us. We have really enjoyed learning all about the Polar Regions. Have you been on any expeditions recently?
Seren
11:04
How are you all today?
Lisa Rosier
11:04
We are all very well, thank you
Seren
11:06
Yes I have recently been on an expedition to a very cold place called the South Pole. It took me a long time to prepare for it and it was very hard.
Lisa Rosier
11:07
How long did it take you to travel to your starting place for your expedition?
Seren
11:08
In total, it took me 8 days to get to the South Pole to start my expedition. It was a very tiring journey.
Lisa Rosier
11:09
Wow! That must have been tiring. Did you go on your own or with a team? Also, what did you stay in whilst you were exploring?
Seren
11:09
I took a long journey across land as there were not many flights.
11:11
We made the whole journey into a long expedition, so we made sure that all of our kit was carried with us on coaches and buses. Me and my team stayed in a few places, most of them small buildings and lodges.
Lisa Rosier
11:11
What type of clothing and kit do you need to take with you when you are on an expedition?
Seren
11:14
We need to take lots of special equipment when we go. Obviously, we need lots of warm layers of clothing as well as something to sleep in like a tent and also something that we can cook our food with. It is very hungry work being on an expedition.
Lisa Rosier
11:14
What do you eat when you are out there?
Seren
11:16
We need to eat lots of food that is high in energy but also light to carry. For breakfast I would have a good bowl of special porridge that is easy to cook and then during the day I eat some snacks to make sure I don't get tired. It is also important to drink plenty.
For my lunch, I would carry a special dried meal that I can add hot water to and make into something like a stew. This keeps me warm and full of protein and energy for my expedition.
11:17
Then for my tea I would have another special dried meal to add water to that is very tasty and warm. Dried meals are light and easy to carry, which is important when you are exploring.
Lisa Rosier
11:17
Did you see any wildlife when you were there? Have you had any up-close encounters with animals?
11:18
Other than clothes and food/drink, what other things do you need to pack in your kit bag?
Seren
11:20
Yes I have. On my travels I have seen many animals like seals, penguins and even a killer whale in the ocean as it swam past. On one of my expeditions I even saw an arctic hare!
Lisa Rosier
11:20
Have you ever seen a polar bear?
Are Huskies really used to pull sledges?
Seren
11:21
In my kit bag I would definitely need to take a sleeping bag for night times to keep me warm to sleep in. I would also take a snow shovel and some crampons for walking on ice so that i don't slip over.
On my travels I have seen a polar bear. They are beautiful but they can be quite fierce if you get too close to them. I love polar bears.
11:22
Yes, Huskies really are used to pull sledges and in some places people use this as their only way to get around from one place to another. They have no cars you see so use their huskies to help them travel.

11:23
We have been learning about the Inuit community. Have you ever seen an Inuk?
Seren
11:25
Yes, I have been welcomed into an Inuit community before. They are all so friendly and kind. They looked after me once when I was poorly.
Lisa Rosier
11:25
We could ask you so many more questions but know you must be very busy. One thing we would like to know though is where are you heading to next? What is your next expedition?
Seren
11:27
I have loved talking to you all today. My next expedition is back to the arctic because I am studying how animals make their journeys. I have been following some for a long time.
Lisa Rosier
11:28
That must be really exciting and interesting. Thank you for talking to us today and good luck on your next adventure!
Seren
11:29
Thank you all so much. Your questions were superb!
