Regarding economic reservation, Justice Chandru says that India being a majority poor country, reservation cannot be given to all the people, which is why the phrase 'socially and economically backward' has been used consciously. In relation to the 'creamy layer', he points out that the identification of this layer is tricky as the income criteria is not entirely reliable.

"Tamil Nadu has a history of having a creamy layer and there is no scientific formula to divide the people," adds Justice Chandru

In response to another question raised on the appointment of women, Justice Chandru says that today, this state is attempting their level of equality. In Tamil Nadu, out of 200 candidates, only around 6 or 7 are women. He believes that there is no vertical reservation but horizontal reservation where there is a fair procedure.

To a question posed by a member of the audience regarding the effectiveness of being open-minded, Dr Varsha Ayyar responds by saying that post-Ambedkar, it has been very ineffective as Dalit women are still being raped and murdered and hence, has been ineffective.
