Rishika asks about the tools one can use for 'information needs-assessment' in the post-COVID world.
5:31
Brown responds that one of the strategies they see a lot is setting up a 'listening board' by going into the places where community members interact, like parks, community centres, grocery shops etc.
She says, "the same can be tried even now, and social media can help as well." She acknowledges that pivoting to Zoom for open newsrooms has its flaws, but to some extent, it can be used.
5:32
Nihit asks if the pandemic has damaged the ability of new media journalists to take initiatives and could that pave the way for traditional media again.
Brown says that mutual aids groups have been active. "There is new activity on both sides of the spectrum but it is too soon to say."
5:33
Suyashi asks if social journalism can help in bringing different communities together.
5:34
Brown responds that there have been experiments that groups with opposing views have been brought on for conversations, that are informed by reporting as well as moderated. "Conflict can be because of a variety of reasons, but sometimes it is for lack of credible information. Social journalism could help there," she says.
Meenatchi asks about the link between social journalism and environmental journalism. Brown responds with the example of her students working after Hurricane Sandy. She says journalists can help with providing information needs of impacted communities, convening people, figuring out their specific information needs etc.

Last question.
Moyurie asks about lessons that can be carried to the post-COVID world.
Brown replies that we need to work around 'mutual benefits' regarding reporting and news distribution. "For historical reasons, journalists did not like collaborating." But her students have been changing that through a cross-organisation collaboration on voting behaviour. "Political journalism needs to become more savvy to deal with misinformation and disinformation, like verification, debunking etc." she says.
