Welcome to the Part 2 of the special lecture on 'Engagement Journalism' by Jeff Jarvis
6:42
Addressing the important issue of privacy, Prof. Jeff Jarvis says, "We need privacy and protection but I don’t have a problem with targeted advertising".
6:44
Jeff believes that personalization is important and if we avoid the personalization of content then we will return to an age of mass media.
6:48
While opining on the question regarding the sustainability of print media in the post-COVID-19 era, Jeff claims that the price of print newspapers in India is low. But the cost of a paywall becomes difficult for people to meet. Thus, days of print are limited.
6:49
Jeff tells that social journalism is a relationship that one builds. For people in New York, newspapers are needed to stalk prices. In the US, print dies slowly but in the Indian market, digital journalism is gaining more success.
6:50
Talking about the social media utilization, Jeff suggests that  we can create new mechanisms for voices suppressed to be heard on Youtube and WhatsApp. He further adds, " Things like Substack are not well-known but can be used to create new competition."
6:52
Jeff believes that there is no easy answer to the question of how to maintain balance amidst public polarization.
6:54
"Objectivity is a myth", states Jeff.
6:55
Jeff thinks that it is important to understand the victims of bigotry and not the bigot.
"To overcome partiality, one must be intellectually honest", opines Jeff Jarvis.
6:57
Jeff suggests that equality and accuracy are two values of traditional journalism that should be adhered to by contemporary journalists.
6:58
Talking about how to maintain audience growth, Jeff says, "Impact is a really interesting measure of success in journalism. It is all about you- how much attention do you pay to the media? The impact is an entirely different way to look at the value of journalism"
7:01
Jeff tells, "There is also a fear of going to communities that are strange to journalists." He believes that Journalists must learn to overcome the apprehension of other communities. Othered communities have the right to choose their stories not to be exploited. We have to recognize all of that because that is where the importance of having newsrooms come into the foreground.
7:02
Addressing the gathering of budding journalists, Jeff urges them to go among all the communities and teach them journalism so that they can generate their own journalism.
7:04
"A few people with privilege in media takes away the agency from others. In a world that I represent, there comes a point, where one values the expertise and gatekeeping", tells Jeff when asked about the gatekeeping function of journalism.
