State of Indian Media: News or Noise, Watchdog or Lapdog
powered byJotCast
Asmita
4:10
There has to be some gravitation of certain forces of professional ethics. There is a lot of professionalism that still exists in the media but isn't able to be rightly expressed.
4:11
Sircar: "I strongly feel that the direction the wind is blowing in would tip the scales - the last Mann Ki Baat."
4:12
There, the number of dislikes were more than likes, by a target margin.
Indications of the public would encourage people to return to their mode of questioning.
4:14
Broker chips in saying when Mann ki Baat started, he was invited to speak in the first show. It went live. When asked about if it would leave a transformative impact, there was no interaction.
Another question from Nagercoil
4:15
"What exactly is the contraction of TRP. How is it manufactured or manipulated?"
Questioner's name is Davesh Shyam.
Sirkar responds by saying he doesn't think it's being manipulated.
4:16
He says there was one private organization that had limited number of raters with tilting scales in favor of whoever was more pleasant to them. But not anymore.
Certain amount of credibility but with penetration is necessary.
4:17
More is the penetration, more is the capture of data.
4:18
He whispers that powerful houses get to influence policy, but far greater improve on what they used to have - a Murdoch organization. The TRP is not manufactured.
4:19
Broker calls for concluding comments. Asks for comments for the detoxification of Indian minds back to their critical strength, and the remedy for manipulative behaviours.
He questions on what is the remedy.
4:20
4:21
Pamela Philipose says: "The need to detoxify the mind is important, especially in today;s day of fake news. Both hate speech and fake news have their roots dipped in the same echo chamber where you get the media that you choose and you forever live in the bubble of that media."
4:22
"How do we break out of that is a large question, large enough to include education and building - critical engagement in the child. Detoxifying the mind must first start with the independence of the mind, which is linked in some way to the independence of the media."
4:23
Anti-CAA protests showed that even the so-called left literate women were able to understand that the constitution could protect them.
4:24
This is a learning that we could actually make use of as we go ahead, mentions Philipose.
She says that we are looking for people who understand the media, we must understand the media to combat this.
4:26
Philipose further responds: "All parties have IT cells who do mischief, we must recognize this. But the BJP has been most successful in leveraging their IT cell. They used social media in the most systematic way. The present PM understand social media like no other politician."
Broker throws in the last question from Sudhir in New Delhi to N Ram.
4:27
"Why are Indian journalists weak? Lack of money or education? Why are they timid and weak?"
4:29
Ram responds by saying this is too much of a generalisation. He mentions ACJ, a number of young men and particularly women that come to journalism. They are attracted to it, in a romantic fashion. Once they enter the newsroom, they find it completely out of sync with J-school teachings.
Lot of them come under pressure from the top. Also from an existential situation, if certain political leader has strong backing, it can silence journalists.
4:32
4:33
Sircar gives concluding remarks
4:35
Sircar refers to Pamela Philipose, saying that the remedy lies in sort of media you want. Media is like a boat that floats on the water of the people. It's not a rocket that can rise above the level of the people. That is not to blame the entire distress of the people - large unchecked manipulation is happening.
The only check we can look to now is the Juidiciary.
A large part of which has suddenly woken up to its responsibilities.
4:36
Reassertion is very clear in the last few months, despite that the objective and subjective conditions in the Supreme Court haven't changed.
4:37
If the Judiciary intervenes and says, like the Delhi and Bombay HC have been saying in case of Sudarshan,Tablighee, Rhea Chakraborty, and if they start raising such questions - then it's child play to expose fake news.
4:38
He feels that the legislation hasn't worked so far for the Bhima Koregaon case, but JS is sure it will come around. We must be patient and make it clear that are ideals are non-negotiable.
Broker calls N Ram for comments.
4:39
N Ram says that media environment is a part of larger socio political environment.
Professionalism will help in ripping apart fake news.
4:40
"People like AP Shah who are speaking out about these issues are very valuable. Give more support to digital media fronts like The Wire. Caravan is also doing a wonderful job."
4:41
States are providing advertisements to channels like NDTV to help them survive.
