Hello and welcome to the Media Rumble’s second session, The Power of Lutyens' Media, moderated by Ashok Malik. The panelists are - veteran journalists, Kanchan Gupta and Nalini Singh, columnist and ORF fellow Mihir Sharma, and Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta.

Kanchan begins by pointing out the similarities between India and America. He feels the ball is in our court while deciding what is good for our viewers.

Nalini mentions that the origins of Lutyens media came from crony-socialism so it goes back to pre-BJP, as stated by the DD news.

Kanchan, on the other hand, claims that media has failed to the job of exposing corruption of authorities while, they abuse their power in position. He feels there is no credibility.

Nalini talks about how we have adopted feudal democracy in this era, giving power to those alike.

According to Kanchan, Latin media is facing identity and existential crisis, with media running over 70 years, calling it a 'Ponzi' scheme.

Kanchan also gives an example of how reports of Sonia Gandhi being unhappy about floods is published, even when she did not give such a statement.

Swapan states Connotations of Lutyens where there is considered to be a Delhi bias and at the same time, an elitist bias about who fits in, hence, being aesthetic and not political. He assures or rather claims that his politics does not work the same way because he went to the right school.

Swapan further adds that politicians know and acknowledge that the Lutyens media is biased, making it more problematic, by giving the example of Indira Gandhi.

Mihir views Delhi media to be disconnected aesthetically from the rest of the country. He further adds that the narrative they have built is fatally biased. He states them to be the people who think they fit in and them alone.
