Phillies or Dodgers?  Someone who can take on massive money.
Curtis

Would it make more sense for K. C. To sign Morrison and let Hosmer go. Spend what money they have for some pitching. Ex. Minor
Tim Dierkes
10:18
I'd say so, yes.  But we're banking on the Royals thinking Hosmer is awesome.
Brandon

Which marquee free agent in next year's class is most likely to sign an extension/renegotiate his deal before next November?
Tim Dierkes
10:20
Maybe Donaldson or Kershaw.  With Donaldson, he'll be 33 for the 2019 season, so maybe he could just get the Jays to take him four years out or something.  With Kershaw, the Dodgers could approach him and ask what it would take for him to not opt out.

C Santana only 45 mill? think he would get more
Tim Dierkes
10:20
I think he has a fair chance at a four-year deal.  Not sure I see a robust bidding war for first basemen though.
Dan

Logan Morrison 3/36 confuses me. If the Sox are going to throw $40M at a first baseman, why not get Santana? I honestly think they’d be fine if they just re-up Moreland for like 2/14
Tim Dierkes
10:21
Seeing LoMo as a secondary piece with a JDM signing.  If you throw $25MM a year at JDM, saving a bit at 1B makes sense.   I think they can do better than Moreland, who will do worse than 2/14.

Seems like the Royals will need a new center fielder. How high do you think the chances are of them bringing back Jarrod Dyson?
Tim Dierkes
10:21
Totally reasonable.
Jason
10:21
IMO Lorenzo Cain makes a lot of sense for the Orioles. Corner OF spots are thin and Jones scheduled to be FA next year. Agree/Disagree?
Tim Dierkes
10:22
I like it, only thing is that they need to add a lot of starting pitching and Cain costs a decent buck.

Who do the Dodgers replace Darvish with?
Tim Dierkes
10:23
I can see them being in on Arrieta, Tanaka, possibly Lynn or Cobb.  Plus Archer.

With the lack of a trade market the past few years for Zack Cozart, and where the Padres are in their rebuild, I just can't see how 3/44M makes any sense.  Care to break that down?
Tim Dierkes
10:24
We are the high man on Cozart.  Our reasoning is that he's too good for all MLB teams to let him slip below 3/39 or so (we have 3/42).  Not a ton of teams looking at SS, but he can also help so many at 2B/3B if he's willing.  For the Padres, I think it's good value, it's great to get a real SS in place, and it's not really a problem if Tatis comes ready.

With the Cards making it clear they need a middle of the order bat I was surprised to not see any hitters in Top 50 going to Cards. U thinking trade for them?
Tim Dierkes
10:25
Yes, at least in this scenario.  But we had them for JDM until yesterday, and we definitely expect them in that bidding.  They seem like they'll at least consider Hosmer.  But there are solid trade options too of course.

Was justin u pton on the top 50 before he signed?
Tim Dierkes
10:25
Yes, he was #4.
Boof

Is the latest Otani news just hardball negotiating tactics by Nippon, or do you think he actually stays put?
Tim Dierkes
10:27
If anything it's hardball by the MLBPA, because reportedly they are standing in the way of a new deal with NPB.  It's odd - the MLBPA sold out basically all amateur players, but they're fighting for Otani?

Would the Braves really give 5yrs/$85M to a ~2WAR Moustakas when Frazier is available, and with Camargo already here and Riley on the way?
Tim Dierkes
10:28
I can see the Braves being interested in both Frazier and Moose.  First we need to see who's running the show.
Jshep12
10:28
I know he's not included but O'Tani has to be the #1 target of every team. Why on earth would he not wait until he's 25? is there a reason other than his own impatience?
Tim Dierkes
10:29
Must just be confidence, or a feeling that he'll be a millionaire regardless.  Maybe he just wants to come here now, crush it for six years, and then sign that huge FA deal.

Everybody is going to want to stock up on pitching depth (surprise!), and there’s a lot of it available. Does that help drive prices down at all? Is there really that much money to go around that a dozen relievers can score $15M plus?
Tim Dierkes
10:30
Every year, a few of the projected three-year guys end up getting two.  So I'd say the expected total spending on the top relievers will fall short of what we have.  We just can't predict whether it will be Bryan Shaw or Jake McGee or whoever who does not get that third year.
Bobby Evans
10:30
Scale of 1-10 how much am I secretly hoping Cueto opts out?
Tim Dierkes
10:31
Hmmm.  From a pragmatic standpoint, a GM would like that to happen and free up the payroll.  But it's possible Evans wants him to stay and just bounce back so they can win in 2018.
Still in recovery phase
10:31
Odds Kershaw signs an extension so he doesn't opt out next year?
Tim Dierkes
10:32
50%.

Is Brantley a fit for the Giants?
Tim Dierkes
10:32
I think a CF would be better.  Plus they already have some brittle guys.
Ryan Furness

If you're Tanaka, do you opt in, knowing this team can win now? Or do you opt out and try and get more money based on your performance in the playoffs?
Tim Dierkes
10:33
It depends how much some extra money or a change of scenery matters to him (and I say that not being critical of him if he does opt out).  I feel strongly that he will top 3/67 on the open market.  But then he might not get to be as picky about his destination.
Crisostimo
10:33
I get him not being in the top 50 for obvious reasons, but for the fun of it, find a fit for Jose Bautista, and an even funner fit, don't say Oakland.
Tim Dierkes
10:34
I'll put him on the White Sox for a few mil.
Jshep12
10:34
You have the Yanks paying $8 a year for a backup catcher. Isn't that exorbitant when the team needs pitching and is trying to get under the $197 million?
