I don't know that Aledmys is appealing or the Padres really feel they need long-term SS help, but one would think Wil Myers could be attainable, by virtue of him not being great.
Matt Klentak
10:54
Tanaka to Philly? Really? No way I sign someone with his injury record...if I wanted that, I'd bring Buchholz back.
Tim Dierkes
10:55
Hmm, is that really a fair comp?  Can we all at least agree that if Tanaka opts out, one MLB team will give him a large sum of money?
2018 Offseason
10:56
How much posturing by teams will be done this year, holding back, waiting for the real big names next year......Harper, Machado.....how will that play and do you think it may deflate or delay some signings into later January?
Tim Dierkes
10:57
If you want to say that the Phillies will sit out big names this winter because they're not quite ready, I buy that.  But teams should not hold back much in anticipation of next winter.  So much changes in a year.  A few guys re-sign, someone needs TJS, someone's performance tanks.  I don't think non-Nationals teams are building their 2017-18 offseason around what Bryce Harper might do.
Anthony M
10:57
Too many teams need catching for Avila to end up a Yankee. Jason Castro got 3 years last winter as a defensive guy.
Tim Dierkes
10:58
I'd probably switch it to the Nationals if I could go back.  However, I don't agree that a lot of teams need catching.

What do the Yankees do about not having a lefty reliever other than Chapman? Keep Chasen Shreve in the bigs? Move Montgomery to the bullpen? Sign Mike Minor? Do nothing?
Tim Dierkes
10:59
Joel Sherman proposed signing Mike Minor as kind of a "the rich get richer" thing in regard to their bullpen, and I wouldn't rule out someone like him or Jake McGee.  There are only a handful of teams that won't consider adding to their bullpen.

Are there any other relievers that the Nats could/should sign other than Kintzler?
Tim Dierkes
10:59
Just about any.  It's one of the few ways they can improve the team, so I wouldn't even be shocked for them to get Wade Davis.
Zack Miller's knee
10:59
If you right about the Cubs getting Addison Reed and McGee doesnt really make their BP than just signing Wade Davis
Tim Dierkes
11:00
I'd rather have the two guys than put all my eggs in Wade's basket.  I'm a little down on Wade though.
Chris

Would Cozart really sign with the Padres and then willingly shift to 2B or 3B in a year or two?
Tim Dierkes
11:00
I would say that is probably not his first choice.  I'm sure he'd prefer to get 3/42 and play SS the whole time for a contender.  So far, not seeing where that happens.
Anthony M
11:00
What is Eric Hosmer getting 6 years and 132 MILLION for? A 1B only who's best quality is not hitting for power? If he gets over 4 that's insanity.
Tim Dierkes
11:01
I think we can all agree Hosmer will be overpaid.  But if I was a better man I'd bet on five or more years.

Doesn't it make more sense to sign two setup relievers (i.e. Swarzak and Nicasio) for smaller deals than commit $50m to Holland and put all your eggs in one basket? If the Cards sign Holland/Davis would they also go after a setup guy?
Tim Dierkes
11:01
Well, I like that strategy, but if everyone did then closers would never get large contracts.  But I could see the Cards still adding a secondary piece, yes.

Arrieta to Astros, 5 yrs @ 90m
Tim Dierkes
11:02
I consider the Astros a legitimate suitor for Arrieta.  Though an $18MM AAV would be unexpected.

11:02
I like the Chacin to the Reds prediction, but I'd prefer the Reds land Fister. Any chance of that happening?
Tim Dierkes
11:03
Absolutely.  There is no real driving force for the Reds to sign Chacin specifically.  They seem like they'll add some affordable veteran.
Hammmbone
11:03
Make as much money as you can, while you can. Tanaka could stay and contend with a good Yanks team with a great farm, or he could try to get paid. I think he takes the money.
Tim Dierkes
11:03
He can also get paid, and still contend.  It's not like the Tigers are signing him.
Rob
11:03
Any picks on the top 50 that you cringe at already?
Tim Dierkes
11:04
I can make a case for the Yankees to sign Avila, but I find some of the criticism of that valid.  Ditto Brewers-Arrieta - we knew that was out on a limb, but we wanted all 50 picks to work together and I wasn't feeling the Cubs or Cardinals for Jake.  But I might take the Nats for him because it seems a bit more likely despite all they have invested in Scherzer and Stras.
Joe
11:05
What makes you think Mikolas to the Padres, as opposed to, say, the Rangers?
Tim Dierkes
11:05
He's a fine fit for the Rangers, I think we were just trying to spread the wealth a bit.  The Padres need starting pitching too, it's a better place from Mikolas' standpoint, and there's a Preller connection.
Anthony M
11:05
Lucas Dude getting 1 year and $6 Million? Power guy who gets on base. He probably ends up in Seattle, but should get much more.
Tim Dierkes
11:06
Should he though?  He's a platoon 1B.  But we did predict Alonso for 2/22, so I can see your point.
Ron
11:06
would the Pirates really pay Dyson six million a year to be a back up?  Especially with S-Rod getting over $5 million.  Or does this signing indicate the Bucs will deal one of their outfielders?
Tim Dierkes
11:06
It presupposes a Cutch trade.  We try not to assume a bunch of trades, but it's hard to also make these picks while assuming no one gets traded.

Yankees have Romaine why would they sign another catcher
