Stanton was essentially a premium FA (kind of) that wanted to go to LA, young coming off an MVP, LA seemingly had no interest.   Resetting tax?
Tim Dierkes
2:59
That is a pretty good point.  Might have been the tax thing, might have been that they just don't love the player or how he'll age, and could well be a sign that they don't want any long deal like that on the books.

I think fans are remembering last year's tight free agent market and confusing it for what might happen this year.
Steve Adams
2:59
There did seem to be some ownership push to get under the luxury line.
Tim Dierkes
2:59
I agree with that.  Moose and Lynn are not Harper, Machado, and Corbin.

Guess I could see Keuchel, Pollock, Grandal, or Kimbrel getting disappointing deals.  Not all of them but one.

I signed what was at the time the largest contract in MLB history with the White Sox...they're not going to make history again, are they?
Steve Adams
3:00
Tim brought this up when discussing Manny/ChiSox ha
Since then, the biggest deal Chicago has signed was Jose Abreu at 6/68
Tim Dierkes
3:01
Definitely something I've thought of when it comes to Machado.  There had never even been a $10MM player until Reinsdorf did that.  Good example as compared to the Dodgers.  White Sox have never signed a $70MM player!  Does that mean they never will?

Why did you guys give Joe Kelly a 3-year $27M contract. That's a $9M aav for a guy who's stats have never been all that impressive.
Steve Adams
3:01
Consistently pumps upper 90s
Tim Dierkes
3:01
It would definitely mean buying into postseason hype and velocity more than stats.  Could happen.
Steve Adams

Charlie Morton got $14MM based on four starts

Listen like 90 percent of your predictions are wrong didn't you predict dodgers to sign Stanton lol
Tim Dierkes

Easy to see a team looking at Kelly and thinking they can turn him into something dominant.

There are 2 universal truths:  Never get in a land war in Asia, and never give an MLB player longer than 5 years on a contract.   Why do GM's think they are better than the universe?
Steve Adams
3:02
Ha
Tim Dierkes
3:02
They don't like giving long-term deals.  It is the cost of doing business.  GMs would like to give every player a one-year deal.  And then if that happened they would like to make MLB contracts non-guaranteed.
Steve Adams
3:02
I don't really understand or share your perception.
Tim Dierkes
3:03
It's more like, you and 3 other teams badly want Bryce Harper because he's awesome.  They keep bidding until only one is left.
James

over/under 2 opt outs on Harper/Machado's deals?
Steve Adams
3:03
You're supposed to set it at a fraction!
Changing to 2.5, I'll take the over. Let's get weird.
Tim Dierkes
3:03
I think exactly two.  Opt outs are neat and all but the more you put in the fewer total dollars you get.

Brantley seems like a far better bet in Wrigley given his platoon and cost. Wouldn't the Cubs be better off spending that $ on an elite arm given Morrow's injury concerns?
Steve Adams
3:04
Actually: Over on Harper, under on Manny
Tim Dierkes
3:04
We think Brantley costs as much or more than Cutch.  The Cubs definitely need major bullpen help.  Maybe they will spend, we don't know.

What happens with Addison Russell?  Keep or trade? Whats the possible return?
Tim Dierkes
3:04
I think he's traded this month for some kind of mildly interesting spare parts or prospects.
Mauer

With my deal and others coming off the books there seems to be a lot of money for the Twins to spend. We need some veteran leaders to teach Sano and Buxton how to be pros. Could we be a wildcard for Donaldson?
Tim Dierkes
3:05
Really solid fit, yes.

Lets see if I can sneak in a non-top 50 question... Word around town is Cleveland is selling. Chances are they would move Jose Ramirez to a team like St. Louis for a solid group of controllable, big league-ready talent?
Tim Dierkes
3:05
Basically zero.  Ramirez is one of the game's most valuable assets.

Think it would be awesome to have a chat where you three just talk between yourselves. Like would have loved to see you three talking about creating this list.

I have talked about cleaning up some of our Slack chats and just publishing transcripts.  We had some heated debates.  I would take some effort and editing but it's a possibility!
Thanks for chatting everyone.  We made MLBTR history here today.
