You mentioned not being as big of a fan of Clint Frazier, but do you think the Yankees still made a good trade? Or should they have held out for a bigger package?
Dave Cameron
12:34
I think it was the right idea to trade him. If I were them, I might be trying to spin Frazier for something else though.
12:35
Sounds like Nimmo for Bruce, plus maybe some other stuff.
I'm not that high on Nimmo, but I'm also not sure Bruce is dramatically better.
Scott
12:36
Agree that Nimmo is "not that good," but what's the basis for applying that label to d'Arnaud? He had a 131 WRC+ last year with solid defense. He has struggled at the plate this year, in limited time, but projects to improve. Is the main concern his injury issues? Or do you think this year's struggles at the plate, and not last year's success, represent the true baseline?
Dave Cameron
12:37
The 131 wRC+ came in 250 at-bats. Career wRC+ of 101, and he does not give you solid defense. Bad defensive catcher with an okay bat and lots of injury problems.

12:37
Reds cannot seem to accurately Value prospects. True or false?
Dave Cameron
12:38
I think they just prefer proximity to the majors over upside. Nimmo fits with guys like Peraza as lower upside guys who can play sooner.
Mike
12:38
Puig for James Shields? Terrible for the Dodgers, no?
Dave Cameron
12:38
Yes, Dodgers wouldn't do that.
Houzer
12:39
if the ask was the same, would you value Sonny Gray or Moore as a better return?
Dave Cameron
12:39
Gray.
Guest
12:39
In regards to your "Fair price for Chris Sale" piece, how would you value Eduardo Rodriguez? A year in the majors with mixed results, but was a high ranked prospect before
Dave Cameron
12:39
I'm not as high on Rodriguez as others. Big velo bounces, and he doesn't seem to miss bats when the fastball is closer to 90 than 95.

12:40
Is a package of De Leon, Holmes, and Puig enough for Jose Quintana?
Dave Cameron
12:40
It should at least get the White Sox to think about it. It depends on how Puig is valued, which is not an easy one to solve.

Moncada + filler for Lucroy and Jeffress. Who hangs up?
Dave Cameron
12:41
Red Sox aren't putting Moncada in a Lucroy deal.
Outta my way, Gyorkass
12:41
Will a Lucroy deal get done before the deadline in a few hours?
Dave Cameron
12:41
Yes, I think he ends up in Texas.
MH
12:42
Which prospects does Texas end up dealing?
Dave Cameron
12:42
I'd bet on Brinson.
Patrick breecher
12:43
Where do you see Pearce landing
Dave Cameron
12:43
He'd make sense for the Indians.
RMR
12:43
Dave, I think most people read "lower upside" and read that as "lower value". Is is more accurate to interpret that more as lower variance than lower average value? A guy like Peraza is highly unlikely to ever be a 4+ WAR, all-star type. But he's much more likely to be a regular major leaguer than your typical plus prospect who is still in A ball.
Dave Cameron
12:43
Yeah, that's pretty much what I was trying to say.
Narrower range of outcomes.
12:44
Joel Sherman says Nimmo and two lower level guys for Bruce.
Will
12:44
Do you think the mets trade for jay Bruce will be very helpful for and potential world series push?
Dave Cameron
12:45
Not really. It's probably a less than one win upgrade, and that's assuming his defense isn't the total disaster that UZR/DRS have rated it as this year.
Joel
12:45
Earlier this year there was a fantastic FG piece on batted ball authority, and it showed Valencia having one of the best batted ball profiles in the league (Exit velos on GB/FB, GB/FB mix, etc). Why does the market on him seem so quiet as opposed to the "bigger" names like Bruce? Is it because the Defense is sub-par?
Dave Cameron
12:45
He's also apparently got some clubhouse issues.
PR
12:46
how many GMs know Dave Cameron is Managing Editor of fangraphs?
Dave Cameron
12:47
Probably 29 of them. I don't know what Dave Stewart knows.
Outta my way, Gyorkass
12:48
How badly did Will Smith's last 10 games torpedo his trade value? Strictly an offseason move now?
Dave Cameron
12:48
Yeah, he's going to have to rebuild his value and show he can pitch through the knee problem.
PR
12:48
ERod, Swihart, Devers and Kopech isnt enough for Sale?
Dave Cameron
12:48
No.
Pete
12:49
Hypothetically if a baseball ops dept. called you at 3:59 panicked with a trade offer they hadn't expected or evaluated, would you help 'em out?
Dave Cameron
12:50
If a front office is calling me on trade deadline day, they have more problems than evaluating an unexpected offer.
