Happy Deadline Day everyone! Going to run through a chat before things get really hectic in the next couple hours.
9:09
Queue's almost empty right now, so I'm going to brew some coffee and I'll be back to start answering stuff in three minutes.

What's the craziest trade you could envision the White Sox making at this point, that's even vaguely possible?
Anthony Franco
9:12
I don't expect them to do anything off the wall, since they've already addressed the obvious thing they wanted to (second base). But in the spirit of the question -- teams can always have more bullpen help, and there's no one better on that front than Craig Kimbrel.

Hope you have a few cases of caffeinated drink of your choice handy.  Think today will actually be more hectic than yesterday, or did the Scherzer/Turner deal mean today's going to look pretty boring in comparison?
Anthony Franco
9:13
I think we'll see a greater number of trades but nothing's going to match Scherzer/Turner in magnitude. I'm not sure it's even really possible to do so.
9:14
But Berríos, Bryant, Gibson still need to move. Maybe Báez, Luke Voit probably goes now that the Yankees got Rizzo. It won't just be reliever rentals either
Joe
9:14
White Sox fans can't decide between being excited that their two biggest holes were plugged with realistically high level answers, or being annoyed that most of the other clear contenders have improved by far more.  Which is right, assuming Hahn doesn't actually make any more moves?
Anthony Franco
9:16
I like Tepera a lot, think it was a really good add. Hernandez is kind of boring, but they didn't really need to do anything there. They're a near-lock to win the division anyways, and the impact of adding players (particularly position players) for the playoffs is kind of overstated
9:18
Let's say you play a seven-game series, and you get 30 plate appearances from your second basemen. Hernandez has a .307 OBP, Adam Frazier has a .383
If they both play to that level in the playoffs, Hernandez gets on nine times over the course of those seven games and Frazier gets on eleven times. It's just not a huge difference, and the sample's so small that Hernandez could absolutely outplay Frazier in that time

I was surprised by the return the Cubs got for Rizzo. I'm assuming they wouldn't have shipped him out for less. What would a solid return look like for Baez if the Mets rumors turned out to be true?
Anthony Franco
9:19
Part of the reason they got what they did for Rizzo is the Yankees want teams to keep the money on the guys they're moving. I don't think the Mets would insist on that
9:22
If they did ... I would guess the Cubs could pull a 45 FV and maybe a 40 or 35. I have no insight into how they feel about specific Mets prospects, obviously, but let's say something like Alex Ramirez and Jake Mangum?

Guessing it'll be mostly a SP day, but question about RP: what's Seattle thinking for the closers?  Committee with the three of them, or?
Anthony Franco
9:22
Probably, most teams have gone that way anyways
Even Graveman wasn't supposed to be the closer. Montero just pitched poorly and Servais started giving Graveman the opportunities more

9:23
After the Kendall Graveman move on Tuesday, Jerry Dipoto alluded to some big moves to follow that never seemed to transpire. Any idea why he's doing a 180 on that now? Was Diego Castillo his big move?
Anthony Franco
9:23
So let's build on this
I actually loved the Graveman deal for Seattle, with or without Castillo
9:24
Toro's going to be a good everyday player, and to get him cheaply for three-plus years for a couple months of a reliever (even a good one like Graveman) is really strong value
That's true whether or not they keep Toro as a utilityman this year and let him replace Seager at third next season, or if they look to trade him
9:25
Obviously, Graveman's teammates loved him, so I don't blame them or Seattle fans for being disappointed
9:26
But I think the idea that it signified that Seattle was "waiving the white flag" was way overblown. They got back a big leaguer who might already be better than Dylan Moore, then Chargois and a prospect for Castillo in what's basically a lateral move in the bullpen

9:27
Is the Scherzer deal official?
Anthony Franco
9:27
Not technically but it seems a foregone conclusion it will be

9:27
Any chance the redsox get Berrios
Adam
9:27
Berrios goes where?
Anthony Franco
9:27
Red Sox are possible, especially since Speier reported yesterday they're willing to go over the tax
9:28
But it seems the smoke's biggest around the Blue Jays and Padres for Berríos. I'll guess Toronto for something built around Austin Martin

Do the Brewers pick up anyone else ? They usually uncover a couple of bullpen guys at the deadline.
Anthony Franco
9:29
That's what I expect too. Nothing huge -- Gregory Soto or someone like that -- but I think they'll make one more move after trading away a lot of the in-house bullpen depth

isnt It better to take the draft pick compensation instead of the fringe prospects, especially in the case of Story , I would offer him the one year deal and if he rejects, you would possibly get a top 35 draft pick instead of a fringe prospect, what do you think ?
Anthony Franco
9:30
Certainly a case for that. It all depends on the offers, and the Rockies should have a system set up to evaluate whether they believe the prospects they're getting offered are better or worse than the guys who typically get selected in the 30-40 range of a draft
But that's only true of Story IMO. I'd move Gray for whatever I can. I think he'd accept a QO, and if he does, you're back in this same position next summer
9:31
Except then there's no guarantee he'll still be one of the better pitchers on the trade market (could underperform or get hurt), and he'll be making three times as much money
I have a hard time believing his value would go up

Do you expect the Tigers to do anything today?
Anthony Franco

Trade Schoop and a reliever

Where do you think Luke Volt will end up with now that the Yanks picked up Rizo.  What can they get for him.
