Anthony Franco

Man, I wish I had time to give this more thought haha. I'd just never considered him a plausible trade candidate until yesterday
I guess I'll say Seattle but I don't feel great about it
Long Suffering Tribe Fan
9:33
If we assume Scherzer and Turner are headed west, do the Nats have enough to compete by 23? 24?
Anthony Franco
9:33
Yeah I don't think that's crazy. The system's still not great, but it's a hell of a lot better now
9:34
Soto's a superstar, and they typically spend enough to think they'll sign guys again, probably in the 2022-23 offseason. I don't think it's a five-year rebuild
Philly A's
9:34
The Phillies have been so quiet, seems like they are shell-shocked after losing Tyler Anderson-  what do you see them doing today?
Anthony Franco
9:35
Somebody else at the back of the rotation since Anderson fell through. Merrill Kelly?
2021>2020
9:35
What's your take on the return (as we currently know it) for Scherzer and Turner?
Anthony Franco
9:35
I'm surprised the Nationals did it and I absolutely love it for the Dodgers, but I don't think Washington got fleeced
9:36
Ruiz has been a top prospect for ages and just needs to play for a team that doesn't have Will Smith. Gray's stock has gone through the roof the past couple years
9:38
He's already got good stuff and he's a plus athlete who works hard and has a super advanced understanding of pitching. That's the kind of guy I'd bet on continuing to get better as he gets into his late 20's
Philly A's
9:38
It would seem like the A's are done after Marte, but a DH would be nice.  Any rumblings on a (obvious) low cost option?
Anthony Franco
9:38
Actual rumors I've seen, no. Unless you mean Yan Gomes (who's been a better hitter than Moreland but doesn't really count).
9:39
But C.J. Cron's making nothing and shouldn't cost much in terms of prospects
Assuming he's not going on the IL (he's day-to-day with a groin issue right now), A's should just go get him

What happened to your colleague Connor Byrne?
Anthony Franco
9:41
Connor took some time off, but I believe he'll be back within the next couple weeks.
Sabean
9:42
Jeez I thought Sabean kept things close to the vest.  If your the Giants would you prefer to add Voit + Gibson, Kennedy or the Kimbrel/Bryant?
Anthony Franco
9:42
Bryant/Kimbrel
9:43
More costly in terms of money, but more impactful in a playoff chase IMO and fits the roster better since Bryant can play the outfield well
Mike D
9:43
Could reds land Seager?
Anthony Franco
9:43
I assume this is Corey Seager?
9:45
The Dodgers aren't trading him, no. They can just play Turner around the diamond for the rest of the year
ghhurst@reagan.com
9:45
Other than the Armstrong to Rays deal, do the Orioles seem likely to make any moves today?
Anthony Franco
9:45
I think they'll trade Fry and Sulser. Maybe Scott too
Hits Like Rays
9:45
With the game's best farm system and so many pre-arb MLB players, is it likely that the Rays will lose some of those young players to the Rule 5 draft over winter?  If so, does it make sense for them to package a few young players to get an MLB upgrade (like a starting pitcher) now?
Anthony Franco
9:46
I could see a push for Berríos -- probably around Bruján.
9:48
But I don't think they necessarily have to do something like that. They do have the 40-man crunch, but rather than packaging three of those guys for an impact big leaguer, they usually trade one for a slightly more talented prospect who's farther away
9:49
That's part of the reason they always have the crunch in the first place, because they're always willing to move middle relievers for upside plays in A-ball, some of whom develop into the kind of player they'll need to protect or trade three years down the road
Pete Kaha
9:49
When do you think the Angels will call up Jo Adell?
Anthony Franco
9:49
I'm surprised they've waited this long, but he's still striking out a lot in Triple-A
9:50
That they signed Adam Eaton and keep trotting out Juan Lagares suggests they're not super bullish on Adell bringing much to the table this year
9:51
It's not like there's a high bar to clear
Russell C.
9:51
Speaking of Seager's, what's your best guess on Kyle Seager's contract next year? $15M option seems steep. If you're Seattle, do you decline it and hope to bring him back on something less expensive or do you sunset that chapter in Seattle's 3B saga?
Anthony Franco
9:52
Definitely decline the option. I'd probably just let him walk, but maybe they explore something to keep him around as a guy who gets 350-400 plate appearances between the corner infield spots at DH
9:53
The roster's had a lot of turnover in recent years, so it's not crazy to want to keep someone around who's respected in the city and clubhouse
9:54
But like I said earlier in the chat, I think Toro can basically do what Seager's done this year for the league minimum so I'd have bigger priorities elsewhere on the roster
Mets
9:54
Is it possible the Mets could pull off a trade for one of Bryany/Baez/Story and keep JD Davis? I think Davis is very underrated and has several years of control left. Plus he's a big clubhouse presence. Is it worth giving that up for a 2 month rental?
Anthony Franco
9:55
It's absolutely possible. I'm sure a Davis trade is one of a thousand things they're kicking around right now
9:56
As for whether they should give him up for a rental, I was actually having this exact conversation with my brother yesterday. I think I'd do it for Bryant but neither of the shortstops
