As a diehard Cub fan I admit, it's been hard at times to be objective about the team. But now, not so much. I know it's early... way early... But after watching 5 or 6 of their spring training games, I am less than enthusiastic. Pederson looks great and the rest of their "core" will probably round into shape at the plate, but the pitching, especially the bullpen, looks very average at best. Kimbrell looks horrible. Is this a lost season? It already feels like one to me.

I wouldn't judge by spring training. I could easily see them coming out on top in such a winnable division, but that's not to excuse how they handled the offseason. It was not good, as Tim Dierkes wrote yesterday: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/03/offseason-in-review-chicago-cub...

When a player is traded for 'cash considerations' What general amount of $$ is being discussed?
Connor Byrne
2:37
It seems to be in the low hundreds of thousands, but it depends. I read something yesterday about a guy who got traded for a dollar. Can't remember who it was off the top of my head.

MLB Over/Under 2021

Do you think these teams will be over or under their projected win totals for 2021? Also, do you have a surprise team for 2021?

Dodgers- 103.5
Yankees- 97
Padres- 93.5
Braves- 91.5
White Sox- 90.5
Mets- 90
Astros- 87
A's- 86.5
Connor Byrne

I'll go over on Dodgers, Yankees, Padres, White Sox
who may very well be the four best teams in baseball

Who will be the Blue Jays best offensive player this year? Who will be their best pitcher not named Ryu?
Connor Byrne
2:40
I'm tempted to say Vlad at the plate, but I don't have the guts to pick against Springer. If you're talking about starting pitching, I'll reluctantly say Ray, but I don't like that rotation after Ryu.

when a player is traded for a player to be named later is there usually a cap put on that as such he has to be a top 100 prospect or top 30 in the organization as such
Connor Byrne
2:41
If I'm not mistaken, the teams agree on a list of possible players & then the club acquiring the PTBNL gets to pick from that

What is the argument against being able to trade draft picks?
Connor Byrne
2:42
I can't think of a good one. Hopefully draft pick trading is part of the next CBA

Is it dead? When is the last possible date it could be added? Any chance it gets added midseason?
Connor Byrne
2:43
Here's another thing I hope is in the new CBA. The ship seems to have sailed for this year.

Connor my dude!  When is Trade Rumors going to offer swag?  I want my TR cap, t-shirt, bumper sticker and key chain.  Money is no object!  Thanks for these FO chats.  I feel special!
Connor Byrne
2:45
That's above my paygrade, Jorge, but I'd like to see it. Wouldn't mind driving around with an MLBTR window sticker or wearing an MLBTR shirt.

Any insights on who is going to close in SD, SF, or ARI?  I could extend this list to half the teams in baseball it seems, but let's stick with the NL West for now.
Connor Byrne
2:47
I think Soria for Arizona and the other two teams will have timeshares

Should I purchase a Jose Canseco game used bat with my stimulus check?
Connor Byrne
2:48
surely there are better ways to spend $1,400

For as much as I was hoping Atlanta would bring back Greene and Melancon (or similar relievers), am I wrong in thinking that they'll be ok, since some of those innings could go to Wilson, Webb and Wright?  Sure they're young but they really impressed down the stretch and in the postseason.  If Wright and Wilson aren't in the rotation, I can't imagine either of them going back to AAA and would instead fill a multi-inning role.
Connor Byrne
2:49
I'd have brought back one of them (or at least kept O'Day), but the Braves haven't been shy about addressing the bullpen during the season. So, if their current experiment doesn't work, Alex Anthopoulos will do something about it before the deadline.
JD Davis
2:51
Seriously tho, whats with all this talk about JD Davis not being tye full-time 3B. If this was always going to be the case, why not make more of a play on the FA market or via a trade?
Connor Byrne
2:52
I know Davis is a bad defender, but I'd be content to roll with his bat until at least the trade deadline. If he flops, then re-assess.
2:53
Davis as a Met: 129 wRC+, 2.8 fWAR in 682 PA

Really like the new message boards and this may be above your paygrade, too, but are there any plans to include a separate tab (maybe between 'Chat' and the search bar) on the various traderumors sites for easy subscriber access to the perks like the analysis sent out via emails, forums, chat transcripts, etc. Thanks!
Connor Byrne
2:54
I'll ask Tim about this

My spring OPS is over 1.000! Is this the year I finally break out by cutting my K’s, making contact on pitches that bend, batting 245-250 and hitting 35 dingers?  Am I *good* now?
Connor Byrne
2:55
That seems rather aggressive

Are people sleeping on the Cubs? They're a team that won the division despite down years from Baez, Rizzo, and Bryant (and Contreras to a certain extent). The only other team in the NL Central that got demonstrably better are the Cards.
Connor Byrne
2:57
I think they're still a decent team, but Cubs fans are so fed up with their ownership and how the offseason went that they're rightly frustrated. I continue to think anyone but the Pirates could win the Central.
2:58
with that, I have to leave to handle the site. Sorry if I didn't get to your question, but thank you for participating and subscribing. Steve will do next week's chat. Have a good weekend!
