Do you see Bellinger getting non tendered at the end of the year if he doesn't hit? It's like he lost his power stroke.
Anthony Franco
3:26
Yeah I think he's a likely non-tender barring a big second half
3:27
As you said, the power production just hasn't been there lately and he's still striking out a ton
3:28
I doubt the Dodgers would pay him $20MM after two straight below-average offensive seasons
Jason Heyward
3:28
What’s more likely, I retire after this season, or I find a major league deal somewhere?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Heyward's still under contract for 2023
Missed Opportunities
3:29
The White Sox are hitting .094/.158/.125 in 38 plate appearances with the bases loaded so far this year.  Small sample size, but that is just not professional level.  The failure to take advantage of run-scoring opportunities has been one of the biggest issues for the team.  What can they do to turn the ship around?  More DFAs/trades?
Anthony Franco
3:29
I think you have to address second base at the very least. Harrison/Leury just isn't cutting it
3:31
The situational hitting problems are just a blip. That happens sometimes and it's frustrating to watch while you're in it, but they'll come around. Bigger concern is that it's a pretty top-heavy roster that just lost arguably its best position player (Tim Anderson) for a couple weeks
Grandal/Moncada/Pollock have all been terrible, but I don't know what else you can do there besides running them out and hoping for better

I read a piece the other day saying if the Phillies fire Girardi, they should consider hiring SEVENTY THREE YEAR OLD Terry Collins or SEVENTY NINE YEAR OLD Davey Johnson. This is INSANE. Who are some younger guys they Phillies should consider hiring if they show Girardi the door?
Anthony Franco
3:32
Yeah I can't see Collins or Davey happening, although I'd have said the same about Tony La Russa and maybe even Dusty Baker before they got hired
3:33
Midseason, you're probably looking at a promotion of somebody on staff in an interim capacity if they move on from Girardi
Then you'll see some of the same familiar candidates -- Don Kelly with the Pirates, Joe Espada with the Astros, Matt Quatraro with the Rays, etc. -- probably under consideration for the permanent job next winter
(not) Jason Heyward
3:33
Oh, my bad…maybe just a little wishful thinking on my part ;) Heyward is a good dude, but god I’d love to get a different bat in that lineup
Anthony Franco
3:34
Ha yeah it feels like that deal's gone on forever. I had to double-check to see if he was still under contract
I think there's a chance they just release him at some point though. Give Nelson Velazquez the at-bats when he's ready

how many of the young stars who could be in a trade package for Soto have free agency dates more than a year after Soto?
Anthony Franco
3:35
I take Mike Rizzo at his word when he says they're not trading Soto, so I think this is moot anyways
But I don't want to dodge your question, so I'll accept the premise the Nats would make Soto available
3:36
Even in that case, I think you're looking at a supercharged version of the Trea Turner package as opposed to getting back an established, controllable regular
A handful of top prospects, some of whom have already reached the majors but aren't yet regulars on their incumbent teams, like Josiah Gray and Keibert Ruiz were
3:38
A team that trades for Soto would be a full-fledged win-now club, and I doubt they'd want to create another hole on the MLB roster if they could avoid it. As a completely hypothetical example, I think you'd be looking more at MacKenzie Gore, Luis Campusano, CJ Abrams types from the Padres as opposed to, say, Jake Cronenworth coming back in that deal

Do you think Rios should get more playing time? He has as many hr as muncy and turner combined with less plate appearances….
Anthony Franco
3:39
Probably but he's also running a 40% strikeout rate right now, so I understand the Dodgers' hesitation there
I think that'd come down if he were given regular reps but he's not without risk or anything, even with the excellent early power production

Obviously, the Guard's wunderkind Oscar Gonzalez isn't going to hit .360 for the rest of the year. But will he hit enough to stay in the lineup? Will his much talked-about power come?
Anthony Franco
3:40
I think he's a spare outfield type. That approach is just really alarming

3:41
Is Jeffrey Springs' success in the starting rotation sustainable?  I know some regression should be expected, but I am shocked it has gone so well for so long.
Anthony Franco
3:41
I don't know how many innings you can reliably count on from the guy after he threw just 44 2/3 last year. At some point, fatigue probably just sets in
3:42
But I'm with you, I didn't expect this to work but he's been really impressive. They've obviously gotten success out of a similar experiment with Rasmussen, and I do think they're kind of at the forefront of these designated "two-times-through-the-order" hybrid arms that'll continue to be effective
3:44
Springs isn't going to strand 96% of baserunners all season, of course, so the ERA's going to come up a little. But he's missing a ton of bats, throwing strikes, avoiding hard contact. Pretty much doing everything you'd want from a pitcher right now

A lot gets made about how some teams have to put players on the restricted list when traveling to Canada to play the Jays due to not being vaccinated, but what could this rule/law mean for the Jays in terms of acquiring players via trade? Do teams need to be up front about their own players’ vaccination status?
Anthony Franco
3:44
Yeah it has to be a huge factor in their decision-making process, albeit one that's really difficult to analyze from the outside
3:45
They may need another starter, but they're not going to be able to trade for Tyler Mahle (who went on the restricted list when the Reds went to Canada a couple weeks ago) without losing him for half his home starts. That limits their options a bit
3:46
Other teams are going to have to disclose player vaccination status to the Jays in trade talks, yeah

Are the M's done?
Anthony Franco
3:46
I'm not ready to go that far but it's a long road back

What's up with Robbie Ray? He seems fine for a few innings then serves up middle-middle pitches that leave the yard. Every game he does this!!
Anthony Franco
3:48
He's always been home run prone. He actually had a slightly higher HR/9 last year when he won the Cy Young than he does this season (albeit in a more hitter-friendly park and division). His command just isn't great, so he's going to leave stuff over the heart of the plate
