Royals

Assuming the Royals have ruled out an extension for Benintendi and plan to trade him, what kind of return could we see for him?
Anthony Franco
4:12
It's a couple months of a player having a nice season but rocking a .391 BABIP that he's not going to maintain over six months. He's showing good plate discipline, swinging and missing less than he has in years
He's good but clearly not .337/.402/.431 level, so there'll be interest but I'd be surprised if anyone gives up a Top 100 type prospect
4:13
Feels more like two guys from the 8-15 range of a typical farm system
Quarantino Martinez
4:13
With 14 teams basically eliminated already (less than 1% chance of the playoffs on FG or BR) when do we start seeing big deals?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Not going to happen in earnest until mid-July. Maybe you'll get a stray or two this month but teams always want to wait until the deadline
4:15
You'll have teams like the D-Backs, Rockies, Marlins whom the playoff odds think are dead but who wanted to compete this year and aren't really that far off in the standings. They'll probably drag things down to the wire before selling
4:16
And there'll be some reticence from the buyers, as there always is, because they'll take as much time as possible to sort out their needs. I'll have a post coming soon (probably tonight) looking at a slam-dunk contender that has a player it expected to be productive who's really struggling right now
4:17
At some point, they may want to add a deadline upgrade there, but they'll probably wait as long as possible to see if he can turn it around first. Virtually every contender has that kind of dilemma somewhere on the roster

Should I be worried. Do I need to add another SP
Anthony Franco

(Angels)
Wouldn't freak out about the bad week. There's ebbs and flows over the course of a season, and the aggregate 27-23 is pretty good. They're a legitimate Wild Card contender at least
4:20
Could they use a little more rotation depth? Sure. Lorenzen, Syndergaard, Sandoval, Ohtani all have some potential innings questions. Detmers just might not be very good, Canning's setback hurts
4:21
So a stable source of innings would make sense there, but I still think the bigger issue is the infield depth

Oops!  East Coast time threw me off!
Anthony Franco
4:23
Ha, I face the same problem myself. I'm in the Eastern time zone but all the website time is run on CST because Tim's in Chicago. Rarely does a week go by without me thinking I've messed up and not gotten on for my shift before realizing that I don't actually start at 3:00 pm
4:24
After three years of working for the site, you'd think I'd have that sorted out by now, but nope

4:24
Do I pick up the options on either Max Muncy or Justin Turner at the end of this year?
Anthony Franco
4:25
On Muncy, yes. It's an $11.5MM call, which is basically pocket change for the Dodgers. Even if he struggles all year, I think they'll chalk it up to the injury and bring him back
4:26
Turner's more borderline but trending towards no. $14MM isn't bad if they still think he can be an above-average regular third baseman, but he'll be heading into his age-38 season and is going on a calendar year of struggles now
4:27
With a big second half, he can play his way into them exercising it. But at the moment, it looks likelier they'll buy him out

4:27
What’s an under the radar transaction from this past offseason that’s really working out right now?
Anthony Franco
4:28
Hmm, Tyler Anderson while I've got Dodgers on the brain?
Signed for 1/8, he's tossed 49 2/3 with a 2.90 ERA and a 14.3% swinging strike rate
4:29
Rockies extended C.J. Cron during the season technically, but he's got a 143 wRC+ right now and signed for 2/14.5
There are plenty of others, I'm sure, but those two spring to mind off the cuff

Anthony --- Is it possible to get a glossary that would provide definitions of all the different terms used for transactions, such as "designate" "select" "option" "recall" "promote" plus others?  It's confusing and I would appreciate some clarity.
Anthony Franco
4:30
Figured I'd save this one for last since it's pretty technical
MLB has a broad transactions glossary if you want to scroll through that in more detail, but it's not exactly self-explanatory
4:31
So I'll take a couple minutes to delineate the stuff you mentioned because it's a fair question
4:32
Promote/demote are just kind of catch-all terms. The real distinctions are between contract selections/recalls and designations for assignment (DFA)/options
4:33
When you select someone's contract, you're adding them to the 40-man roster. A player can't get into an MLB game without being on the 40-man, so any prospect you're calling up or veteran on a minor league deal has to be selected to be added to the MLB roster
4:34
Once on the 40-man, that player stays there until he either reaches free agency or is DFA. When you designate someone for assignment, you're taking them off the 40 and, by rule, running the risk of losing them
4:35
That process gives you a week to trade him, release him, or try to run him through outright waivers. If he clears waivers unclaimed, then you can outright him back to the minor leagues (although some players have the right to refuse that assignment and become free agents anyways)
4:36
A recall means the player is already on the 40-man roster and is being brought up from the minors. Optioning the player means you're sending him back to the minors without taking him off the 40-man
4:37
For a lot of early-career players, teams can do this kind of at will, and that kind of move happens daily. Usually it just involves cycling through players at the back of the bullpen or on the bench, and it's less notable than a contract selection or DFA
4:38
Sometimes an option can be noteworthy because of the player involved (Jarred Kelenic, Jo Adell, etc.), but it doesn't make that player available to any other team
Hope that helped
