Robby Cano here
2:30
Hey Connor, I know you're probably not happy with me but I need to know something. I won't be paid this year, and now the Mets just acquired a new more loveable infielder. Once my contract comes back the luxury tax stuff will come in play. Will Cohen just treat it as a sunk cost and cut me? Or am I just the most expensive bench piece in the MLB
Connor Byrne
2:31
I doubt they'd cut him, in part because Cano was hugely productive last season. Now, if you want to attribute that to PEDs, okay. But I think he'll get another chance.

As a long time (65 years) A's fan, I am concerned with how silent the team has been during the off season.  It seems if the team is going to take advantage of the "window" it has to be a playoff team, the middle infield, bullpen and perhaps a veteran starting pitcher needs must be addressed.  Any thoughts on what the team might do in this regard or do we once again watch players like Chapman and Olson be moved to other teams and a new rebuilding phase begin?  Also, what is the likelihood of the team ever getting a new stadium?  Thanks.
Connor Byrne
2:33
It's been a disappointing A's offseason for sure. They've been elite the past couple seasons & now it seems they're squandering it because of the budget. Several key free agents & they've done little to nothing to replace them. At this point, I doubt Chapman (Boras client) or Olson will sign extensions. Your guess is as good as mine regarding the stadium. It seems like everything there's progress on that front, they take a step backward. The pandemic certainly help its chances of happening.

I understand that the complexities created by the pandemic are partially responsible, but why can't MLB and the players' union reconcile before the current collective bargaining agreement expires? Posturing is part of what both sides do to get what they want, but fans grow weary of constant threats of holdouts, strikes, etc. The storied history of the game-and its appeal to the next generation of fans-would be greatly enhanced if an agreement was reached during the 2021 season.
Connor Byrne
2:35
Poor leadership, for one. I'm not a fan of either Rob Manfred or Tony Clark in their current positions.

Telling my older parents that the Mets are fun again is the 2021 energy I need
Connor Byrne
2:37
This is like me with my favorite team, the Buffalo Bills. It feels great when your team goes from afterthought to one of its league's model organizations. No reason not to be excited about the Mets at this point. They seem to be doing everything right.

Do you expect Mejia to beat out Zunino for the TBR catching job?
Connor Byrne
2:39
I'd like to see it happen, but I expect Zunino to at least start the season. It would be nice to find out of Mejia can sink or swim with a new organization. I know he was horrible last season, but he put up some pretty decent offensive numbers (at least relative to his position) in 2019.

What do I have to give up for Story and Gray?
Connor Byrne
2:42
I don't think guys like Jasson Dominguez and Deivi Garcia are going anywhere. So ... maybe prospects like Schmidt, Florial and Peraza (not necessarily all of them) could be on the table in a situation like that. I'm just naming a few who sprung to mind.

Yankee fan getting nervous here. Are the Yankees going to sign DJ? Any thoughts on bolstering the starting staff? Another trade a la Sonny Gray or James Paxton? Re-up with Tanaka?
Connor Byrne
2:43
Sticking with the Yankees, I've gone back and forth on DJLM returning. Right now, I do think it will get done. Doesn't seem like Tanaka's coming back, which I don't really understand - he's shown he can pitch there & shouldn't cost that much to re-sign.

Do you have any intel on Ohtani and whether the Angels are realistically looking at him as a pitcher this year (let alone as a starter)? The Angels camp seems to have been quiet so far regarding starting pitching. They are "linked" to all viable starters as they clearly need starting pitching - but do they need one, two or three starters?
Connor Byrne
2:45
They're open to a six-man rotation, which would seemingly benefit Ohtani. Either way, I do think he'll get another shot as a full-time starter in 2021. But I think they'd be well-served to add two starters. You can't really trust anyone after Bundy, Heaney and Canning, and Heaney has had some injury issues over the years

I am a huge O's fan, let me know your evaluation on there outfield
of Mountcastle, Hays and Santander, I think Hays and Santander have
gold glove potential, and offensively Mountcastle and Santander could be mid of the order impact bats
Connor Byrne
2:49
I love Mountcastle. Santander looks like a regular & Hays has been pretty good so far. The O's appear to have some reasons for hope with those guys.

With Robbie Grossman having signed with the Tigers, who might the Royals target for a left handed, high OBP outfielder?
Connor Byrne
2:51
Probably nobody too exciting. Josh Reddick? Although, he's not really a big OBP guy. Brett Gardner would make sense on paper, but I don't think he'll leave a perennial contender to end his career with the Royals.

As a long suffering Mets fan I'd appreciate any thoughts about the Mets new front office. How are the Porter and Scott hires viewed in the industry?
Connor Byrne
2:52
Quite favorably & rightly so.

Any news on the Diamondbacks?
Connor Byrne
2:52
Pretty much radio silence. We're going to be publishing their offseason outlook soon.

Do you consider Michael Brantley an underrated free agent?
Connor Byrne
2:53
I think he's rated properly. We have him in the 2/30 range, I think, which seems fine. Really good hitter, but he's a soon-to-be 34-year-old with defensive questions and an injury history.

2:54
I'm a confused and distraught fan, what are the Brewers waiting for? Was the Maile signing really just depth, or is it the precursor to something bigger for a Corner infielder, using one of the younger catchers, Henry or Feliciano, as a key piece?
Connor Byrne
2:55
I wouldn't get your hopes up. Hard to envision a team like that doing anything particularly big during a pandemic.
Rangers29
2:55
A fellow Rangers' fan proposed this trade to me, and I want to see what you think: Rangers get: Jon Gray; Rockies Get: Ronald Guzman and Kolby Allard. Who says no?
Connor Byrne
2:55
From COL's POV, It would be a quick no for me

Do you have baseball america and other sites open while you guys do your chat? Seems like you guys know a lot of FO, roster, and prospect info right off the top of your head.
Connor Byrne
2:57
Yeah, you have to go to sites like BA and FanGraphs during these chats if you're not totally sure about something (stats, prospect rankings, etc.)
Mariners fan
2:57
Do the Mariners do anything noteworthy at all this off-season, or do they wait until next year?  Kelenic and Gilbert should be up this year sometime.  Also, do you see Felix Hernandez back anywhere at all, or is he done?
Connor Byrne
2:57
I expect them to wait another year before potentially doing anything big
oldhack
2:57
What do you expect the Astros outfield to look like on Opening day?  Realistic free agent signing?
Connor Byrne
2:58
Jackie Bradley Jr. makes a ton of sense for them. That's assuming Springer walks.
Okay, unfortunately, that's going to have to do it for me. I have to take over the site for the evening. Thanks for your questions and your continued support! Talk again soon.
