Trade Rumors Front Office Chat

Among position players, yes, but I expect Bauer to eclipse both totals (especially AAV)

Will Minnesota just sit on their hands while CWS run them down? Does anyone really even want to play in Minnesota. It's a great place.
Connor Byrne
2:32
No, I think they'll at least sign Cruz or another impact bat (Ozuna?). More pitching additions and even a shortstop aren't out of the realm of possibility either.

Robbie Ray, Jose Quintana, and J.A. Happ all signed one-year deals for $8M.  (I may be missing another pitcher or two.)  It seems there's a broad range of potential outcomes for these three pitchers, which makes the identical price points...weird?
Connor Byrne
2:34
Without looking, I think they're about what MLBTR predicted at the start of the offseason, at least in terms of annual value. It's upside (Ray) vs. a couple somewhat boring vets you should be able to count on to chew up innings and perform decently. I know Quintana didn't pitch much last year, but he's usually been reliable. I might like that signing the best of the three.
Cashman
2:35
I still need one more starter. Who do I get?
Connor Byrne
2:36
It doesn't seem the Yankees are going to re-sign Tanaka. Maybe Cashman's laying in the weeds and planning a Castillo trade. More realistically, maybe a reclamation project like Archer or Porcello

Is JD Davis really that bad on defense?
Connor Byrne
2:38
His metrics (if you trust those) have been pretty bad at third and in the outfield so far.

Tanaka has been mentioned a couple of times in this chat; isn't he a good bet to go to Japan?
Connor Byrne
2:39
I remain in "believe it when I see it mode" when it comes to that, as Tanaka's still just 32 and remains an effective major leaguer. Still, yes, it does seem to be at least possible he'll go home. I don't think anyone ever would have expected that when the offseason opened.

If you were putting together the greatest baseball team of all time, what Negro League players would make the cut?
Connor Byrne
2:41
I wish I had enough of an education on the Negro Leagues to give a better answer, but Josh Gibson springs to mind.

What's going on with the right side of the Braves' bullpen? They need to replace or re-sign O'Day, Greene and -- especially -- their closer, Melancon.
Connor Byrne
2:43
It wouldn't surprise me to see them re-sign any of those guys. Some other notables are still out there as well: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/2020-21-mlb-free-agents.html

If the reports are true; Why would the Yankees end trade talks for Castillo over Torres? I love Torres but he is not a good fielder. The Yankees just signed DJ for 6 years and the next two FA shortstop classes are stacked. As papa George used to say; You can buy hitters.
Connor Byrne
2:46
Torres does have an extra year of team control compared to Castillo. And it's easier to bank on a position player's health than a pitcher's, so that may be part of NYY's thinking. Also, you can't really count on signing a free agent so far in advance. Remember when everyone under the sun thought the Yankees had the Cliff Lee sweepstakes wrapped up?

Should I be glad the Brantley fell apart?  I am better to spend the money on a mid rotation starter (Paxton?) if I can find one
Connor Byrne
2:47
Not sure "glad" is the word, but Brantley didn't seem like a must-have for the Jays to me. I could see them using that money on a guy like Odorizzi and/or an infielder.

Who's the biggest steal of this offseason so far? (FA, since I'm assuming Darvish is the biggest trade steal)
Connor Byrne
2:50
The Ha-Seong Kim deals seems awfully nice for San Diego, even though he hasn't proven himself in the majors yet. That was a risk worth taking for what they paid.
Cappy
2:50
Should the Mets be looking for another SP? Maybe Garrett Richards, or even Tanaka on a 1 year deal?
Connor Byrne
2:51
Yes, I think so. They're still in on Bauer, but even if that doesn't work out, a back-end guy would be nice. It's hard to trust Matz.
Friar Tuck
2:51
Kinda think the Mets got a steal in Lucchesi. He's not an ace, but he's a solid young pitch with years of control, acquired for very little. Am I wrong?
Connor Byrne
2:52
Maybe he'll be their answer at the No. 5. He was pretty solid from 2018-19 before barely pitching last season.

I have read that MLB plans on a 162 game season but will the opponents be geographically restricted as in 2020 to minimize travel and COVID-19 risk or will it be a standard season like 2019?
Connor Byrne
2:53
I'd expect a standard season, but I'm obviously no medical expert. We'll see how things play out in the coming months.

You take away Hank's 755 HR"S and he still has 3000 hits.Amazing
Connor Byrne

Astounding.

Heard a rumor about MIL trading Corbin Burnes to CWS for Madrigal and Heuer (with some other smaller pieces involved).  Anything to that?  Could it make sense as a trade.
Connor Byrne
2:55
I've heard nothing about this, but it is kind of interesting. I don't think the Brewers would do it, as they'd be losing the best player right now and someone who's nowhere near free agency.
2:56
Burnes kind of flew under the radar as an elite pitcher last season.

Wong 2/18 back with the Cards, who says no?
Connor Byrne
2:56
Looks reasonable for both sides, but are the Cards actually going to spend on anyone but Waino/Molina?

Who's on your baseball Mt Rushmore?
Connor Byrne
2:58
This is tough. I think it would be hard to leave off Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Mays or Aaron, but someone like Ted Williams is among those who could easily get a spot, too.

Thanks for hosting these Front Office chats and publicizing them in advance.  It's a great benefit to have multiple questions answered in a single chat.

Thank you all for participating and supporting the site! It's hugely appreciated. I have to go take over the site now, though. Have a great weekend! Steve will chat with you next Friday.
