Good riddance to Bauer. Trading for Bryant, signing Odorizzi, and JBJ is a better use of $40mil, no?
Connor Byrne
2:28
You're talking about the Mets, right? Pretty great alternative if all of those things happen.
2:29
I never saw Bauer as any kind of necessity for them. Same goes for the Dodgers. Not that I'm criticizing the Dodgers for the move. The top team in the game just got even scarier without making a long-term commitment.

Turner done in LA?
Connor Byrne
2:31
They're still in the mix. I think the Nats were my early offseason prediction. Braves look like another possibility. The Brewers have also been connected to JT, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Where does this put the Dodgers in terms of the Luxury Tax threshold (not that there's a huge penalty anyway)?
Connor Byrne
2:33
I believe they're somewhere in the $240MM-$245MM range, so they're way over the $210MM mark right now
Trevor Bauer

Does anyone else even have a shot anymore?
Connor Byrne

"Why are you the way that you are, Dodgers?" - Padres, who have gone all-in this offseason

Beer recommendation?
Connor Byrne
2:36
I don't like beer. It's whisky, vodka or gin for me.

Cruz is back with Minnesota. Why one year and not two, like he apparently wanted?
Connor Byrne
2:36
Age is the easy answer. I am, however, surprised about the value of the contract. I thought he'd get at least $16MM.
Twinniez
2:37
With Colome to Minnesota, will he be even better? Same general teams to face (with the bomba squad now NOT in the mix) and a much stronger defense at almost every position to assist even more with his style of pitching and BIP?
Connor Byrne
2:38
I think he'll be about the same. It's not as if facing the White Sox instead of the Twins is some walk in the park. Both teams are really good, and Colome did have some luck on his side last season, if memory serves.

Jerry gave me $5MM to spend at the candy store however I want.  What do I buy with it?  (Assuming this is his last >vet min acquisition)
Connor Byrne
2:40
Another reliever for the White Sox? Off the top of my head, a guy like Jake McGee is still out there, which surprises me, and shouldn't cost a ton. But it's a pretty large list with lots of solid choices: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/2020-21-mlb-free-agents.html

the Dodgers are willing to spend to win.  Why don't the Yankees, who may have as much money, do likewise?
Connor Byrne
2:42
It hasn't been a hugely busy offseason for the Yankees, but their payroll is still going to be massive this year. Granted, I understand your annoyance that they don't want to go over the luxury tax.
Cashman
2:44
Tell me the Yankees aren't going with Tyler Wade as the backup middle infielder.
Connor Byrne
2:45
I don't know if there are very appealing alternatives left in free agency right now. Marwin Gonzalez might make sense, but they may not want to spend on him. Yeah, though, Wade has been really bad so far and I don't know how much longer the Yankees can keep running him out there.

Regardless of whether there are playoffs, but especially if the playoffs do expand, do you think there should be greater benefits given to better-seeded teams? Examples could be first-round byes, more home games, a one-game advantage to start a series. Or should we continue with the current setup that allows lower-seeded teams to have a good chance to pull off upsets?
Connor Byrne
2:47
I like the idea of better teams receiving benefits. In the NFL, for example, the top seed gets a bye. Not sure how MLB could work that (maybe at least put the entire first series at home for the top club?), but if you're the No. 1/2 team in your league, you should get points for that.

Do you think the Brewers will sign Rich Hill? And do you all at trade rumors value him?
Connor Byrne
2:49
There is no bigger Rich Hill fan than MLBTR founder Tim Dierkes. We all like Hill, but Tim takes it to another level. And that does seem like something the Brewers would do.

If he doesn't resign with the Yankees, is there a place for Brett Gardner in Philadelphia with Joe Girardi? His veteran leadership, playoff experience, left-handed bat, and ability to play all three outfield positions would surely be valuable. Thanks.
Connor Byrne
2:51
I'd say yes if I had confidence he could be a full-time center fielder. Gardner's still a good player, but if he's not an everyday CF, how much playing time would he get with Harper and Cutch in the corners?

Is it crazy to think that Kolten Wong signing with the Brewers might actually be AS impactful as Arenado going to the Cardinals? I mean just a quick glance at the numbers.... Wong is a (truly) staggering +26 DRS improvement at 2B. If Hiura can be even just neutral defensively at 1B, the Brewers have strongly soldified their IF Defense. Not to mention over the past 2 (well 1 and a halfish) Wong is almost a 5 WAR improvement over Hiura at 2B. If Keston just matches Gyorko (who incidentally had only started 14 games at 1B before last season) from 2020 at 1B, the Crew could contend for the Division.... or am I hyping this up way too much?
Connor Byrne
2:52
If Arenado bounces back to pre-2020 levels, it's no contest between him and Wong. But I do like the Wong signing a lot for the Brewers. Solid all-around player on a reasonable deal.

2:53
Bauer's contract is really 2/85M, barring injury, adding the third year to spread the luxury tax hit out a bit.  Shouldn't we really consider his AAV 42.5M, plus a nice insurance plan?
Connor Byrne
2:55
Not a crazy thought, but it's technically in the $34MM range right now. You never know where he'll be in terms of performance a couple years from now. If, for instance, he goes back to his early Reds form, yikes.
StevieM
2:55
Connor, you brought up the idea of the Rockies actually tearing it down. Is the problem, you think, totally Monfort or is Bridich a poor GM overall?
Connor Byrne
2:56
A combination. Monfort is not a good owner, but even when Bridich has had the opportunity to spend, he has failed. I feel sorry for Rockies fans.

Don't quite understand why the Cardinals would eat all but $1.75MM of Fowler's contract. Fowler is a good player, and it's not like they have a bunch of star outfielders on their roster.
Connor Byrne
2:59
Fowler wasn't very good there, but I agree with your sentiment that they need outfield help. There isn't really one guy out there you can trust at this point.

It's 4 o'clock, so I unfortunately have to leave. Thank you to everyone for your questions and your support of the site. I apologize if I couldn't get to your question. Have a nice weekend!
