Very surprised to see Rosenthal sign with Oakland. Thought San Diego would wrap up their wild winter by signing him.
Connor Byrne
2:28
Agreed. San Diego has done a great job this winter, but I'm surprised they didn't keep Rosenthal. Melancon is no slouch, though. And good for the A's for spending some money. They've had a solid past few days after being silent for a while.
Mets
2:28
Will the Mets make another significant move before Opening Day?
Connor Byrne
2:29
I'm not ruling out a Bryant trade (even though I think JD Davis is at least an adequate 3B starter) or maybe another bullpen addition. It seems they're out on JBJ, however.
2:30
The rotation looks to be set at this point.

Cron and Bird could be a fun platoon in Coors. Could you see the Rockies rolling with both of them, or more likely only one makes the Opening Day roster?
Connor Byrne
2:32
I think they might as well at this point. They're not winning anything this year, so just hope a guy like Bird can finally stay healthy and replicate the success he first had when he got to the majors. The Rox could control him for another year after this one, so no harm in taking a shot.

If you were Tatis, would you have signed the deal?
Connor Byrne
2:34
I'd have had a very hard time turning down a guaranteed $340MM, even with Tatis' talent. You never know about career-ending injuries or whatnot. He's set for life now & will play most or all of his career in a place he likes.

Really loving the Mets offseason so far, but I'm more concerned about the bullpen right now. Any thoughts on a way to improve it? (Hope for everyone to have a career year is my normal answer)
Connor Byrne
2:36
Signing a guy like Shane Greene might make sense. Free agency is otherwise pretty low on options.

David Robertson another option to build our bullpen?  Would think he would be pretty cost effective.
Connor Byrne
2:36
I think every team should have interest in him on a minor league deal

Even after losing Bauer, I believe the Reds' top three starting pitchers-Castillo, Gray, and Mahle-offers the best trio in the NL Central. Your thoughts?
Connor Byrne
2:39
I wouldn't quibble with that. Maybe the Cardinals have a case if Mikolas bounces back from injury. The Brewers have a great 1-2 with Woodruff and Burnes. Maybe they can get good No. 3 numbers from someone.

Is there a date we might look for that MLB would resolve the DH rule for 2021? Start of camps? Obviously Opening Day? Or do you feel it just won't happen this year?

Seems the Mets are most impacted by this DH situation. What other teams are in this same boat?
Connor Byrne
2:40
Your guess is as good as mine. I'm just assuming at this point that there will not be a universal DH. NL teams are likely doing the same. Pretty ridiculous this hasn't been officially resolved yet.

Puig?
Connor Byrne
2:42
At last check, no one was aggressively pursuing him. He's definitely a major league-caliber player, though, so I find it odd he can't seem to find a job. I know Puig's polarizing in the clubhouse, but you'd think he would be on his best behavior if given another opportunity.

I've read on CBS that Aaron Hicks ( 12$- 260$ cap ) was hampered by his TJ surgery last season in field and at bat. Almost every potential batting order I've seen published in various sites has him hitting 3rd in NY lineup this season. Must be a lot of anticipation of full health. Any insight or comment?
Connor Byrne
2:44
I don't know if I'd bat Hicks third, but I like him as a hitter. He had a .379 OBP last season, so he's an offensive asset. The defensive metrics have been pretty ugly the last few years, though.

Your thought on Yelich  and a bounce back.
Connor Byrne
2:48
I don't like how much the strikeouts increased, but Yelich walked more than ever & had some poor BABIP luck. He was also weirdly awful against righties & posted some very good Statcast numbers. I think he'll be fine. Maybe not the 2018-19 Yelich, but still a really good player.

Are you going to Spring Training?
Connor Byrne

I am not
Gwynn Jr.
2:49
Will my dad still be the Padres’ GOAT in 14 years?
Connor Byrne
2:49
Tatis is off to a hell of a start, but I'm sticking with Gwynn for now

If the Mets win a World Series in the next 5 years, Sandy Alderson - Hall of Fame?
Connor Byrne
2:50
I think they'd need more than one for that to happen, but I am definitely an Alderson fan

Can I finally shed the cynicism that comes with being a Padres fan of long tenure? I mean, it seems like the organization’s promises are actually coming to pass.
Connor Byrne
2:50
Yes. I think the Padres are going to be a force for quite some time.
Allen
2:51
Anthony Rizzo has been hampered by back spasms and rib inflammation throughout his career, including all of 2020. Any word on how he is feeling headed into 2021?
Connor Byrne
2:51
Doing fine as far as I know. I haven't seen/heard anything to the contrary.
Trades of huge players
2:52
Lots of MASSIVE contracts/extensions in the past few years with some going great and others not so much. If teams start just dive bombing, will we start seeing giant names waving trade clause and being moved? It'll be interesting to see if players start more openly say they want trades like we hear in the NBA rumors.
Connor Byrne
2:54
Could be. We're starting to see it more in the NFL, too, where superstars like Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson have stated they'd like more input into their teams' decisions. Watson wants out of Houston after the team didn't consult him on its coaching/GM hires.

If Billy Beane retired right now, would he go into the Hall of Fame?
Connor Byrne
2:54
He'd probably have my vote for his success/influence on the sport.
2:55
Not that I have a vote at this point, but he'd be a serious candidate for those who do

Are Albies and Acuna firing their agents after seeing Tatis's contract?  Their contracts are malpractice
Connor Byrne
2:55
I'm not going to say anything about the agents, but those contracts looked extremely team-friendly at the time & that continues to be the case
