Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

Villar seems to fit for the Astros since they never really replaced Toro and Diaz may need to play shortstop (or Villar at shortstop). Also Diaz is in the final year of arbitration. Would offering both 4 years at 5 or 6 million per year make sense? Would either be interested?
Anthony Franco
2:34
I don't love the fit. Villar's not a very good shortstop, and I'd rather prioritize defense there if I'm looking for a stopgap complement to Díaz, whose more of a bat-first guy himself
I think Villar would take 4/20 or 4/24, yeah. Don't expect him to get that kind of deal. Something in the Leury García 3/16.5 feels more like the ceiling to me

I didn’t take it as condescending. The Rays, Jays, Red Sox and Yankees all had 90 win seasons. Now the Orioles are or should be rising. I’m curious if it could happen. They’d all have to beat up the rest of the league.
Anthony Franco
2:36
Yeah, I think it's unlikely they're all that good at the same time but could see a path for all five teams to be good in isolation. Orioles still feel like the pick for "AL East team least likely to be good in 2024"

Do the Jays really need a 5th SP? Is Stripling/Pearson/Hatch/Kay enough to start the season? If so, they should just focus on a bullpen arm (or 2) and a Semien replacement (3b or 2b as you mentioned above). Thanks and have a good weekend :)
Anthony Franco
2:37
I agree, I think it's alright. Never hurts to bring in a veteran or two on a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite, but there are contenders around the league with way worse 5th and 6th options than Nate Person and Ross Stripling
The flattop is Dayton his look

Seems like Adalberto Mondesi is coming up more frequently as a trade target for SS-needy teams not interested spending what it would take to land one of the remaining FAs. Assuming Moore/JJ would even entertain the possibility of selling low, what kind of prospect is a fair comp? Pretty challenging given the extensive injury history, up-and-down on-field performance, tantalizing potential/prospect pedigree, and public record of the Royals’ FO saying they can’t depend on him for more than 100 games a season.
Anthony Franco
2:40
Yeah he's a really tricky guy to value for all the reasons you said. I don't think anyone's giving up a top 100 type prospect for two years of Mondesi coming off an injury-riddled .230/.271/.452 season. But I think the Royals, if they wanted to move him, could get a guy on the 40/45 FV border as a headliner
Talented prospect with some risk but a chance to be an average regular, something like that. Is that enough for K.C. to pull the trigger given Mondesi's talent? Idk, probably not

The Jays if they want to replace Semien the answer is Ketel Marte How much would it cost?Leading with Kirk and Biggio.
Anthony Franco
2:42
I don't think Kirk/Biggio's a starting point for Marte. In my view, Arizona would be justified to demand Gabriel Moreno's inclusion in any deal given Marte's play and three years of cheap control

CBAs seem to be for five years? Can they be longer or does neither side want to go longer? Should they be for longer or does revenue/other issues change that drastically that five seems to be the accepted duration. We had a good 20 year run, but also too many strikes/lockouts in my days. I am not optimistic things get settled to everyone’s liking and five years from now we are back to this point again.
Anthony Franco
2:43
I just think they landed on five as what they considered the optimal amount of time to evaluate how everything plays out and come back to the table with things to address
2:44
I don't think there's much chance of a longer CBA this time around. If anything, I'd take the under on 5 if I knew they were going to change the length. Too much uncertainty for both sides in anything much longer than that

If the Red Sox sit out on the high end FA market this year, do you think it signals a desire to retain and build around Bogaerts and Devers?
Anthony Franco
2:45
Not necessarily, could just be that they don't want to go past the CBT and already have a decent amount of money on the books for 2022. After next season, things open up substantially
2:46
That's not to say they wouldn't want to keep Bogaerts or Devers around. I'm sure they'd love to. But I don't think it directly follows that if they don't sign Trevor Story, they're going to throw all their resources at a Devers extension
2:47
I am fascinated to see to what lengths they'd be willing to go on both those guys. Great players, obvious stars with impact offensive potential. But neither's a particularly good defender at their current positions -- perhaps they'd be better if they each moved a spot down the defensive spectrum -- and elite team defenses were a pretty obvious focal point for Tampa Bay while Chaim Bloom was in their front office
2:49
Is that because the Rays couldn't pay for stars and they figured defensive specialists were undervalued by the market? Or is that more of a philosophical preference for those executives? Don't know, but it'll be interesting to see how that plays out

Am I going to join the STL 2022 retirement tour?
Anthony Franco
2:49
I'd be surprised if Pujols plays beyond 2022, although I don't know if he's going to announce before the season and do the whole gifts at every stop thing

Who do you think will be the next New York Mets bench coach?
Anthony Franco
2:51
I have no idea, but I'll take the cop out and go with Jeff Pickler since Rosenthal reported he was under consideration this morning

Last season we lost too much player time due to covid restrictions, so I decide to trade our players who are not vaccinated. The team owner is in full support. Generally speaking, do I get "full value" for any such trades I make? We also will only sign vaccinated free agents. As much as possible we only retain vaccinated staff. This policy is internal and private and do we get in trouble with the union or MLB if it becomes publicly known?
Anthony Franco
2:52
I don't think vaccination status will affect a player's trade value all that much. Maybe there'll still be heightened protocols for teams that don't reach the 85% threshold next year, but it doesn't seem like there was a huge culture war between vaccinated and unvaccinated players on those teams last season
2:53
The bigger issue with trade value might just be that you're dead-set on getting rid of, say, five or six guys on the team before Opening Day or whatever. If you're trying to shop three or four relievers, maybe you're flooding your own market and pushing down the demand a bit
2:54
As for the second question, I don't know what the league and union are going to do about vaccination status moving forward. But my guess (and that's all it is) is that the MLBPA is going to get some sort of CBA provision or rule that prohibits using vaccination status in roster decision-making, yeah
Dejong
2:55
What sort of prospects am I worth at this point?
Anthony Franco
2:57
He's guaranteed around $15M over two years. There are two clubs options after that give the team some upside, but they're also probably not getting picked up unless DeJong performs better than he has the last couple years. He's a good defender with power but a bunch of swing-and-miss the past couple years
2:58
I think there's a little surplus value there but not a whole lot. If a new team's picking up the entire contract, I think St. Louis is probably just bringing back a couple lottery tickets

Who are the highlights of the next FA class?
Anthony Franco
3:00
Trea Turner, Bogaerts if he opts out, maybe Syndergaard has a healthy bounceback and becomes a nine-figure pitcher. Willson Contreras/José Abreu
Full list here:

I'm taking over the site from Mark. I'll stick around to get through the rest of the queue since there's little going on (shocker) but need about two minutes

Aaron Judge and Trea Turner.
Anthony Franco
3:03
Aaron Judge too, yeah

After the lockout ends, what would kind of extension would it take for Cleveland to make Ramirez a Guardian for life?
Anthony Franco
3:06
Haven't given a Ramírez extension a ton of thought since it doesn't seem likely the Guardians are going there. He's awesome but controllable another two seasons, so he won't hit the market until advance of his age-31 season. Semien just got 7/175 at that age, and I think that's a reasonable starting point for Ramírez
