Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

Mets/Montas is tough to peg. I think taking Alvarez or Baty off the table is justifiable, but I also think Oakland could beat a Mauricio-led package somewhere else
2:51
So I wonder if the A's might insist on having Baty in there, even though that might be a bit of an overpay from the Mets' perspective

2:51
If the players played for free, how much would tickets cost?
Anthony Franco
2:51
I truly don't think it's much different than they currently are
2:52
Ticket prices are set to maximize profit by weighing supply and demand among fans. I think player payroll's largely an independent concern

Anthony, have you heard of vintage base ball, 1860s rules? If so, ever seen a game? If not, I recommend checking what teams are in your area.

I assume this is where guys pick a year and reconstruct baseball as it were played in that time?
2:54
I saw a few innings of something like this one time on an adjacent diamond to my school slow-pitch softball league. Cool concept, I should probably check out a full game sometime, yeah

Do most front offices employ the same number of people?
Anthony Franco
2:55
No, I think different ownership groups have differing levels of willingness to commit front office/scouting resources

Which division is the toughest?
Anthony Franco
2:56
I think the NL West will have the club with the best record but the AL East has the most potentially very good teams

The Rockies always seem to think they have a competetive team.  One would think that they would feel a tweak here or there would only make it better.  What sort of additions do you see them making this offseason?
Anthony Franco
2:56
They've been open about wanting an outfielder, and I expect they'll sign somebody in the Jorge Soler range. They could use bullpen help too

2:56
Hey A.F.  Thanks for the chat!!  As a Giants fan, I am curious who you think Farhan and Co. may target post-lockout for time needed right-handed bat, and an additional rotation arm??
Anthony Franco
2:58
They'll be in on Seiya Suzuki, as will around a third of the league. From a rotation perspective, I like them as a fit for one of Bassitt or Manaea
Mariners Fan
2:58
Do the Mariners go get pitching or hitting help first?
Anthony Franco
2:59
They'll do both but I think the bigger addition will be on the position player side. The pitching staff's already pretty good. Offense could use a bit more help, although they've got a talented and versatile enough roster they can cast a pretty wide net from a positional perspective

Do you think the odds have changed for the universal DH?
Anthony Franco
2:59
No, I think it's very likely to happen but shy of 100%, given how the league used it as a negotiation chip for expanded playoffs last year

Who will play Center Field for the Yankees next year?
Anthony Franco
3:00
Feels like it's going to be Aaron Hicks, at least to start. Free agency's devoid of options; I doubt either of Cedric Mullins or Bryan Reynolds is actually getting traded
3:01
And at that point, you're not finding anyone better than a healthy Hicks
Ender Inciarte probably breaks camp as a depth/defensive replacement option, and they can try to reevaluate at the deadline if Hicks get hurt again
Chris
3:02
Do you think Diaz will be the closer on the Mets for the upcoming season?
Anthony Franco
3:02
Yeah, no reason to think they'd displace him
Díaz has fallen into that Raisel Iglesias area for me where for some reason he feels unreliable but he's typically very good
3:03
But objectively, I don't think they're finding anyone better than him for the ninth inning

If you were tasked to resolve the labor dispute by drafting a new CBA both sides would accept, what would would it look like?  What would it look like if you had unilateral power to impose a new CBA?
Anthony Franco
3:05
Too big a question to answer in great detail, but I'd guess we wind up somewhere around six year free agency, a $230MM base tax threshold without escalating penalties, 14 team playoffs and some form expanded early arbitration eligibility
If I had unilateral power, it'd look pretty similar to the status quo
3:06
I hate that draft order's inverse to record, so I'd flip it so the top non-playoff team picks first and so on down
Two-year arbitration because Super Two's confusing. I don't personally care where they set the CBT thresholds, and I'd leave the playoffs at ten teams
3:07
But most of that stuff's not actually going to happen

The Seattle Mariners roster is loaded.  In the minors, they have Evan White, Julio Rodriguez, Noelvi Marte, Emerson Hancock, George Kirby, Cal Raleigh, and Matt Brash.  In the majors, they have Jarred Kelenic, Kyle Lewis,  Luis Torrens, Taylor Trammell, Robbie Ray, and Logan Gilbert, among others.  And, they are (purportedly) in on Seiya Suzuki.

I just hit "return" by mistake.  I was citing the Mariners' plethora of riches. So, please help me sort out this cast of characters … are they all worthy of consideration in my rotisserie auction (AL-only, 10 team, 5x5 … 37-year old league)?  How does the field manager sort out this abundance of players?  Thanks Anthony.
Anthony Franco

The fantasy aspect of this question is better suited for Brad, sorry. Not trying to duck it, I just don't have a frame of reference for what an AL-only 5x5 league looks like
From an MLB perspective, I think Trammell's an interesting trade candidate given all the outfield depth
3:10
Torrens is probably best suited as a #2 catcher/DH behind Raleigh because of defensive limitations. White has to prove himself in Triple-A or else he's just a non-factor, Noelvi Marte's probably a year off from the majors still
3:11
It's an enviable collection of talent for sure, but some of these guys are just going to underperform (as White has so far) and weed themselves out of the mix. That's the nature of prospects
