Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

What would it cost for the Yanks to bring in Chris Bassit? Would a headliner of like Luis Medina or Ken Waldichuk work?
Anthony Franco
2:46
Not a crazy starting point but I think they'd ultimately need to do a little bit better
2:47
Mostly depends on how the A's feel about those guys though. If they buy Medina as a plug and play rotation piece, then they could go for it. If they think the lack of strikes pushes him to the bullpen, they'd probably want someone in the Trey Sweeney mold instead

If Oakland approaches their rebuild/retool with the lightest touch possible, who would you expect to see traded? If they go heavy, who would get added to the list of departing players?
Anthony Franco
2:48
If the rumors of the payroll cuts are overblown, then maybe it's just one of the rental starting pitchers (Bassitt or Manaea)
I think it'll be somewhere in the middle, like Olson, one of those guys and Lou Trivino
2:49
I'd be surprised if they get to the point where Ramón Laureano or Sean Murphy are on the move. That'd be a bigger sell-off than I'm anticipating

What will it cost the Mets to get Manaea from the A's?
Anthony Franco
2:49
As with the Yankees/Bassitt question, I think a lot depends on how they feel about Ronny Mauricio internally
2:50
He strikes me as a reasonable ask for one year of Manaea if they like him, but I'm guessing some teams are just out because of the hit tool concerns and the .290 OBP in High-A last year

With the owners biggest want being expanded playoffs and the players union saying they are unlikely to approve it for the 22 season if it is not a full 162 games it gives me hope that the MLB will actually start bargaining with the union and this will get settled in the next 2 weeks. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
2:51
Fingers crossed. As I mentioned in an earlier question, I think it's the right stance for the union to take to try to get things moving
Hits Like Rays
2:51
I was very intrigued with the Tyler Glasnow interview that MLBTR wrote about a couple of weeks ago. That got me to thinking: assuming he recovers well from surgery and he even approaches his 2021 level of play in 2023, what might his free agent contract look like after 2023? If he is sincere about remaining a Ray, how much money would he have to sacrifice to do so?
Anthony Franco
2:52
Yeah he's a tough one to peg, since it's hard to know how many innings they can reasonably expect from him in 2023 even if the recovery goes well
2:53
If he approximates his 2021 numbers over like 150 innings in 2023, the stuff's intact, etc., then something in the Gausman/Ray range as a free agent seems viable to me
2:54
If it's more like 100 excellent innings but his workload's managed really closely, I could see him being in a similar situation as Rodón is this offseason
2:55
There'll certainly be teams wiling to make multi-year offers, but would they be enough that he's not better off going the Syndergaard route and taking like 1/25 in hopes of doing it over a full season? It's a fascinating situation all around

2:55
Which teams does a shortened season hurt the most?
Anthony Franco
2:55
The good ones, basically
Believe I answered something similar in one of the chats a couple weeks back, but the shorter the season, the more variance you'll get
2:56
Like the Marlins going 31-29 and making the playoffs in 2020 but stumbling to 67-95, which probably better reflected the quality of the roster, in 2021
2:58
The fewer games you play, the easier it is for a good team to go cold or lose a bunch of close games and miss the playoffs. The reverse -- like the 2020 Marlins -- is also true. So I think a shortened season deals the biggest blow to teams like the Astros, Dodgers, White Sox who look to be really strong contenders

2:58
Does Apostel and Demarcus Evans get Meadows from the Rays for the RAngers?
Anthony Franco
2:58
No, I think that's light

2:58
What would Milwaukee want from the Rangers in a trade for Hauser?
Anthony Franco
2:59
They're a tough match, since I think Milwaukee would only move Houser for big league ready offensive help
Maybe there's something to be had involving Houser and Nathaniel Lowe, but it's tough for me to see the Brewers being swayed by guys like Willie Calhoun or Nick Solak

Who is the 1st big bat Texas should go after.
Anthony Franco
3:00
I think they'll go heavy after Seiya Suzuki. Wouldn't surprise me if they pivot to another corner outfielder (Castellanos, Schwarber maybe) if they don't get Suzuki
3:02
I'm taking over the feed from Steve now. I'll stick around to answer a few more questions but will pause for a minute or two here
3:07
Alright I'm back, apologies on that
Uribe 2 Thompson 2 Clark
3:07
If the front offices got antsy for transactions and decided a "Top 50 prospect for Top 50 prospect" challenge trade was in order, which would make the most sense? Lets say the easy ones (Marlins pitching, Blue Jays catching) aren't interested
Anthony Franco
3:07
Yeah so this definitely isn't going to happen, but it's fun to think about
3:08
The guy who jumps out to me would be MJ Melendez with the Royals. He's a catcher, they've got Pérez locked down for a long time
And catchers are tough because, for the most part, there's nowhere really to move them. Too many shortstops? Play one at third base. With catchers, it's usually like 1B/DH as the fallback, and the offensive bar to clear there is so much higher
3:10
As for the trading partner, maybe the Red Sox work as a team that would want a long-term solution there
3:11
Boston signs Schwarber or Freeman and trades Triston Casas for Melendez or something
It's definitely not happening, but it'd be fun as hell if it did

Does the reports of the two sides meeting every day next week give you hope or do you still think nothing will happen?

3:12
So do you think a deal gets done next week since it sounds like they are meeting almost everyday next week?
