Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

They banned Game 163's and won't reseed the playoff field, both of which are kind of dumb but whatever
Joe

White Sox definitely going rotation - Hahn called that out as his first priority right now. ("“Pitching concerns are a little bit heavier on our minds than position players,” said Hahn."). As odd as that may sound for a team with two really good pitchers and three pretty good ones...
Anthony Franco
2:34
Definitely need to bolster the rotation depth. Keuchel was bad last year, López is a roller-coaster, tough to bank on Kopech as a 150-inning guy
2:35
But I still think we're talking more back-end depth guys than say, bringing back Rodón

What do you think of Bernie Sanders' promise yesterday to introduce a bill to end MLB's anti-trust exemption?
Anthony Franco
2:35
Politicians say they're going to do this all the time. They never follow through

What are your thoughts on the addition to advertising to MLB Uniforms?
Anthony Franco
2:36
Indifferent
Joe

With the compressed schedule, do you think there will be more six man rotations?  I'm wondering if we even end up seeing this as the year the six man rotation came to be normal - and sticks...
Anthony Franco
2:37
I actually think it might go the other direction. We've seen teams trend this way lately, but I think the 13-pitcher limit and moderate restrictions on sending guys up and down might necessitate adhering to a more traditional rotation
2:38
Tough to rely on the same seven relievers day in and day out
Lockout 2027
2:38
The White Sox have almost universally been rated as having the worst farm system in baseball right now.  Will that be a major deterrent -- on top of budget constraints -- to them signing Conforto for RF or Story for 2B given that both would cost them draft picks, which they desperately need to build their farm back up?
Anthony Franco
2:38
I think the money's a bigger concern. They're in a win-now mode right now, I wouldn't let the draft picks take me out of the market for those guys if the budget's there
mmddyyyy
2:39
When a player is said to be holding out for an everyday role, is that mostly to set up their next contract?
Anthony Franco
2:39
I'm sure that's part of it, but guys also just want to play
Playing is more fun than being on the bench

Which team will be the 1st to make a Major signing and who will the Blue Jays sign??
Anthony Franco
2:40
I guess using the logic from earlier in the chat, I'm picking the Dodgers (Freeman) as the team with the first huge move
I think the Blue Jays are more likely to address their biggest needs via trade. They'd be my pick on Matt Chapman
No more salary floor
2:40
I know that there is no salary floor in place but can’t anything be done unofficially to try to pressure some owners. There is such a disparity between owners on spending
Anthony Franco
2:41
Raising the minimum salary is basically what achieves this
Teams still have to carry rosters, so the minimum * 26 serves as something of an unofficial salary floor
But teams are obviously reluctant to agree to anything dramatic in that area
Paul
2:42
I read that rosters could be expanded for a time at the beginning of the season. Will they do that
Anthony Franco
2:42
My guess is it'll be 28 through April and then they'll go down to 26
Baseball fan
2:42
Are there some owners who were unhappy with the new agreement. I heard Artie Moreno was one of the holdouts but he has a history of making bad signings
Anthony Franco
2:43
Probably some who aren't super enthused about the CBT hikes, but clearly they didn't have enough sway to convince their peers
Arthur Dent
2:43
Any chance the Bucs move Reynolds?
Anthony Franco
2:43
I think it's minimal. They've basically shown no appetite to do this, at least that anyone's aware of
Ken Rosenthal wrote at last summer's deadline he was basically off the table because the Pirates viewed him as a long-term building block. I see no reason why that would've changed in the last eight months
Arthur Dent
2:44
Mariners fan here… before the lockout, I had optimism that Dipoto would be able to make several signficant additions to the roster. Can’t complain about the Ray and Frasier acquisitions but the M’s do need a couple of impact bats and it looks like the competition for the available FA’s is going to be fierce.  Is Jerry going to be left out in the Seattle rain?
Anthony Franco
2:44
I'd be surprised if they don't make at least one more notable position player pickup
Bryant has been speculated upon a lot there, but he just makes so much sense
2:45
Bat-first player with some defensive flexibility to raise the overall offensive group without inhibiting any young player who steps up as a regular at one position
Artie moreno
2:45
Will I sign story or Correa. Also what pitchers will I go after
Anthony Franco
2:45
(Angels)
Do not think they're signing Correa
2:46
Seems like they really like the Reds' guys (who doesn't). Sonny Gray?
Arthur Dent
2:46
Are we going to see a frenzy of signings akin to musical chairs on meth or do you think things will unfold at a measured pace over the next month?
Anthony Franco
2:46
Lol that's an interesting metaphor
