Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

Is MJ Melendez blocked in KC by Perez? Should the Yankees look into a trade?
Anthony Franco
5:23
Yeah I got a similar question in the main chat this week, but I don't know how the Royals can't consider offers on Melendez right now
5:25
There's risk for the Yankees in doing that. Melendez was incredible last season but hit .163/.260/.311 in High-A during his previous minor league season (2019). I think they should make a real run at someone like Contreras or Austin Nola, but if those options aren't available, I'd prefer Melendez over Ben Rortvedt and Kyle Higashioka, sure

Who has to be added to Andrew Vaughn to make a Manea trade possible for the White Sox?  Or is Vaughn enough (or even too much)?
Anthony Franco
5:26
Vaughn's too much for a year of Manaea. Leading a package for Montas, though? That's pretty interesting

In other sports, especially NBA and NFL, players from both teams briefly mingle on-field after games. Why don't MLB teams do this?
Anthony Franco
5:27
I have no idea why the MLB custom is to have the winning team just shake hands with themselves, but I'm guessing this has been a thing for decades?
As for why they don't shake hands with the other team, my guess is because they play series unlike those other sports. It'd be pretty redundant to meet at the pitcher's mound after four consecutive games against one another
Michael Conforto
5:27
The injury and proximity to Opening Day makes it even more likely that I’ll need to sign a pillow contract. Assuming I sign for 1-year and ~$18M in the next week, where do you think I’ll go?
Anthony Franco
5:29
I would still take the over on that for Conforto. Wrote last week about the teams I thought made the most sense: Guardians, Padres, Giants
Can toss the Dodgers in there now after the Pollock trade

Thoughts on the Kimbrel-for-Pollock trade?  I see a clear benefit for the White Sox, who needed an outfielder.  The Dodgers seem to be taking on more risk with Kimbrel's recent performance history, as well as counting on Lux to perform.  Steve's write-up mentioned Conforto as a possible LA target.  What do you think?
Anthony Franco
5:29
Speaking of which...

What do you think about the trade pollock for kimbrall
Anthony Franco
5:30
Yeah my first reaction was "wow, I see what the Dodgers are thinking but I'd much rather have Pollock than Kimbrel." And then immediately was like "well, unless they're about to sign Conforto"
5:31
So I guess my take on that trade depends on if there's another move to come for L.A. Either way, I think it's a great deal for the White Sox, but I'll be on board for L.A. too if they sign Conforto. If not, I'd have preferred to just keep the outfield depth
Joe madden
5:32
How do you think the outfield will shake out. There seems to be a lot of competition among the young players
Anthony Franco
5:32
(Angels)
5:33
Trout in center, flanked by Adell and Marsh. Upton makes the team as a part-time LF, and Tyler Wade can see some time out there as needed for defensive purposes
Ragbrai
5:33
Do we see any more minor or major trades before Opening Day?
Anthony Franco
5:33
I'm sure we'll at least some more minor stuff like the Josh VanMeter for a lottery ticket deal
5:34
I think we're done with the big stuff but I'd have said that last night too and been wrong. Could the Padres trade for Austin Hays to plug LF? Maybe the Mets respond to the deGrom injury by adding Manaea too? Wouldn't say either's likely to happen in the next seven days but wouldn't surprise me
Joe
5:35
There's no way LAD are signing Conforto, is there?  Wouldn't his salary be nearly entirely in the "really do not do this" luxury tax range?
Anthony Franco
5:36
It would but it seems like they just don't care. They shattered all three thresholds last season. They'd already blown by the first two surcharges this year, and the Pollock trade pushes their estimated number above the $290MM final marker according to Roster Resource
5:37
Ownership's seemingly willing to go wherever and the front office is seizing the opportunity
Bruce
5:37
Although Bryson Stott has had a good spring, do you think the Phillies really will keep him in MLB rather than Bohm given that Stott is not on the 40 man roster?
Anthony Franco
5:38
I don't the 40-man spot should affect it much. If you think Stott's better than Didi, then just DFA Nick Nelson or whatever
5:39
The bigger concern is that he's barely played at Triple-A, but I'd lean towards him making the team given the Double-A performance and shaky shortstop outlook
Gavin lux
5:39
What will my role be
Anthony Franco
5:39
Depends on if there's a follow-up to the Pollock trade. Right now, it looks like he's the primary second baseman with Taylor moving to left field
Dave roberts
5:39
Can you see another trade for a SP
Anthony Franco
5:39
(Dodgers)
5:40
They've already added Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney to a group that had Buehler, Urías, Kershaw (once they brought him back), Price, Gonsolin and maybe Bauer
5:41
And will get Dustin May back midseason
I think they're good with that for now. If need be, they can pivot back to the trade market midseason

ho will the new playoffs system work
Anthony Franco
5:41
Went into more detail about it here
Matt
5:42
Max Kepler, Spencer Steer, and Cole Sands for Elieser Hernandez. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
5:42
I think Kepler alone is too much for Hernández
